SURPRISE! Nutrition tracking is kind of "like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get." (Trust me, read all the way to the end)
The first time I tracked my nutrition, it was part of a previous 5% challenge. I was truly stunned, shocked, and in disbelief at my results. Why? Well, my recommended minimum calories from my doctor and trainer with the level of exercise I do is 1400 calories and when I tracked my daily meals I found that I was consuming on average....... 800 - 900 calories a day. I never imagined it was so little.
I always thought that if you gain weight you must be eating too much and it feels like society thrusts upon those of us who are above our "ideal" weight that we must be eating too much or too often. I discovered that I was eating 3 meals daily with 1 snack, but since it was mostly fresh fruits and veggies with a bit of protein, my calories were extremely low.
Eating too little calories can be just as damaging to health as eating too much. The body starts to store everything because it thinks it is starving. It slows the metabolism to a snail's pace to conserve energy, too.
When I started changing my eating to reach the minimum of 1400 calories, I lost 15 lbs. in just 2.5 weeks. I thought to myself "Wait a minute, wait a minute....... I am losing weight by eating more! That's crazy!!!" Crazy, but true. So, I am eating more, but still eating very healthy, clean and whole-foods related.
Whether your tracking shows you need to reduce calories, alter when you are eating those calories (like too much protein or carbs at one meal vs. another), or increase your calories, it is a very valuable tool in getting healthy and fit.
