This past Friday I had my first Mahjongg lesson. It's being taught by a private person who plays twice a week. She was a special ed teacher for many years. One of the hardest things about the game for me is to remember that it isn't Rummy or Rummio. In those games, there are four suits of 13 cards (in Rummio twice that) or tiles. in Mahjongg there are three suits of 9 tiles (times 4) and lots of other tiles. In Rummy, you can pick up a discard, in Mahjongg it is tightly scripted whether you can pick up a discard or not. In Mahjongg, there is an annual card that tells what kinds of hands you have to make. There are a lot of choices but you kind of have to commit to one early on.
My friend, Lisa came over on Sunday to practice and making the hands is pretty challenging. I think I'm really going to like playing. I have three more lessons. Tonight Lisa and I are going to my other friends game to observe strategy and better understand the play.
Several years ago I tried to learn Bridge. I didn't find it fun enough so I've given up on it. For now, to get really good at Mahjongg will be enough for me.
