There are many resources out there about setting SMART goals. Most of them will tell you that the most successful goals to keep are the ones that are easy to do. And in my journey to better health, I've found this holds true (for me at least).
I've made a list of mind and body goals I'd like to pursue in 2018. This list is very broad and vague, so I will need to get more specific when I choose which ones to pursue over the course of this year. And because months are an easy way to track time, I'm planning to set month long goals, and change them after the month has passed.
In the "mind" category: connect, create, declutter, learn, mental health.
In the body category: nourish, pamper/recover, endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. (the last 10 are the 10 fitness domains of CrossFit)
All that remains now is to choose a focus in each category for January. Back in November my "box" (CrossFit lingo for gym) held a pull-up challenge where we were challenged to get 500 pull-up reps in during that month. Since I don't have a pull-up at this point, I did banded and jumping pull-ups, and went over 500 for that month. I decided then that I would continue this challenge in December, and also add in double-unders (a jump rope move where you pass the rope twice for each jump) as that is a movement I've been trying to master. And while I still don't have a strict pull-up, I do feel I'm getting closer, and I have hit multiple personal records (PR's) in my double unders, so yeah me! What is this leading to? My "body" goal.
I'm planning to continue the pull-up work (strength and power) and add in handstand work (balance and flexibility) which should help in my yoga class as well. I work on this when I'm at the gym, so Monday-Friday.
For the "mind" goal, I've already started the declutter process. Larry had mentioned that he'd like to move the "ugly college furniture" out of our bedroom, and I can't say I'll be sad to see that go! But in order to do that, I'll have to find a new place for or get rid of all the things I have stored on and in that contraption. So I started yesterday, and got rid of a bunch of stuff that was literally collecting dust there. I will work in this daily until it's cleared off.
