"Natural Causes" by Barbara Ehrenreich

Tuesday, April 24, 2018

I've long enjoyed the spiky caustic and well-informed commentary of Barbara Ehrenreich. I'm reading her latest book, "Natural Causes: An Epidemic of Wellness, the Certainty of Dying, and Killing Ourselves To Live Longer."

She writes about some disturbing findings about the immune system and its microphages--those "big eaters". They can be treasonous. She presents "the emerging scientific case for a dystopian view of the body" in a state of "ongoing conflict at the cellular level."

Ehrenreich knows that she is "old enough to die". And so am I. She goes into some details about the potential negative effects of some preventative procedures. There are some very fascinating points that I never knew before (did you know that some bats menstruate?)

This book is a nice addition to the literature on the limitations of medicine (see also "Being Mortal" by Gawande).
