The 5% Challenge and Me

Most of my friends ( I can count them on one hand and have fingers left over) know me as rather quiet and shy. My husband states that I would make a perfect hermit. While this is true, it is also true that I really do like people.
I joined my first challenge last Spring because of a close friend and fellow Spark member. She encouraged me and told me that it was a helpful and fun experience. While her personality is sparkling and helpful I am generally a laid back hesitant participant in events. The nice thing about these 5% challenges is that there are a vast variety of groups that cater to different types. So, I joined last Spring and was accepted into the Casual Travelers. I felt they fit my personality and I was right. I have been in every single challenge since then and always with the same group.
There is the other thing about me – I am a creature of habit. My eating habits and exercise habits were bad or non-existent. The challenge helped to alter these habits in small easy to do steps. Often jumping into a diet or life change full force is doomed to failure with the 5% challenge I feel the opposite is true.
Each week my life changes are done in small steps. This is what the challenge is about. I now keep track of my daily food intake. I log it in on Spark and if I miss that is ok. The challenge made me create an exercise routine. I have kept to that because I did not want to let my fellow Travelers down. But if I miss no pressure it is after all the Casual Travelers. I now go to the gym every morning at 5:30 am instead of sitting and just watching TV.
My team is special to me because I like them. I have the greatest leaders (yes, I do) and I have developed some online friends, some of them even live near a beach. My dream place. They encourage me with just a word or a photo. I actually look forward to coming into my Spark challenge every day and seeing how they are doing, how they are feeling, and joining them in their successes or their stumbles.
I encourage all Spark members to try a 5% challenge. Find a group that sounds good to you, there are many. If you don’t meet your goal – don’t worry – you are not alone. But, you will come close with the help of others and there is always a second chance.
