Anemia ~ Hematologist Visit

Tuesday, December 11, 2018

I went to the hematologist and his conclusion is that it is still iron related. He says that I do have hypothyroidism and that is just exacerbating everything. He says that when a person has iron deficiency anemia and hypothyroidism, the hypothyroidism makes the anemia worse. He basically said I need to find a good supplement that my body will absorb better, eat a good iron-rich diet, and get on a low dose thyroid tablet. At that point, everything should straighten itself out. WHEW! It was a relief to hear that I am going to be OK! He said a LOT of my aches, fatigue, and general tiredness can probably be pointed straight at my thyroid. If we get it treated, I will begin to feel lots better. Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers! I am still lurking and focusing on my health and wellness. I’m eating lots of green veggies and I did swap iron supplements....AGAIN. I am trying to find the right one for me and my body. -Amanda PS - He did say that my numbers at my PCP were sitting just below a 10 and that normal should be a 12 or above for hemoglobin/hematocrit and that while I was in his office my number was 12.7!!! YAY! So, all the greens and broccoli evidently helped! =)

I'm so glad that you are improving! I remember before my hysterectomy my hematocrit was down to 7 and I even needed a blood transfusion. It sounds scary, but it wasn't at all... in just two hours I felt a million times better!

Sounds like you have a good doctor and that you are taking good care of yourself too. Continue to feel better!

I'm assuming you know that cooking in cast iron cookware DOES add iron to what is cooked in them?!

I had the same issue a few years back. I got some radiation for my thyroid & now I'm good to go. It gets better so hang in there.

I was very anemic a few years ago. I had to go in for iron pushes 3 times a week for about 4 weeks.
