2019 and January
Monday, January 07, 2019
I'd planned to write this piece on the start of January, and then I had to put my cat down the day before. Kinda of 2018 kicking me on the way out, I guess. Anyway, that's made for a rougher start to the month than I'd expected, and some of my planning and such dropped in importance. Or, at least, the more active parts of it did. I've been loosely planning things while going along, but I think it's time to actually get it out there and see what I'm doing here.
Last year I started using a BuJo, and in doing so decided to pick a word for my year. I'm carrying that forward for 2019. My word is Action. I spend a lot of time making preparations, making plans, but taking action and finishing things, no so much. This year, I want to change that. Especially since, as far as health and fitness, I pretty much went into a holding pattern about half-way through last year.
So, for 2019, I want to make actual changes so I can get actual results. I still need to refine these vague plans into actionable items, but that might be a month-long thing.
So, plans for January then.
Health-wise, there are a few things I want to pay attention to my eating habits. I'm not picking a particular diet or rules right away, though I will start to trend back toward low-carb more often than not, as it's my most historically successful nutritional concept. Part of easing back into healthy eating is trying to work in making my own food. I hate cooking. Like, actually hate it to the point of resenting all time spent in the endeavour. I don't expect this to change, but I figure I can work it in slowly and make it so I can tolerate it. Also, finding ways to make it less of a time-sink, which I know partly comes from hating it and partly comes from not being practiced at it.
Anyway, I've set a goal to make three meals a week myself. That is a pretty low bar, I know, but baby steps. That'll mean a breakfast, lunch, or dinner, with no take out and no pre-prepared meals. I am letting myself count my work lunches, which is usually meat slices, cheese, and veggies, but I will try and lean more on the meals at home that require actual preparation and such. Once I've got into a routine for the three meals, I'll start looking to add more.
Exercise-wise, I want to work back into it slowly again. I've got a bunch of stuff in my office right now, which is usually my home work-out area, so I'll probably be relying on walking again. For now, I want to walk everyday, but I'm going to count the trips to and from work. That means it'll mostly be making sure I don't stay inside all day on the weekend, moving very little. Given the status of the sidewalks in the areas I usually walk, it's a bit tricky, but I'll go with it.
Self-care wise, I want to start taking some time to myself. Right now, I get that when I basically crash and check-out with YouTube videos. I'm fine with keeping up with my YouTubers, but I want it to be an intentional thing, rather than an over-whelmed reaction. I'd also like to work in some meditation again, but I'm not setting a specific marker for that one just yet, because I don't want to over-whelm myself with too many added things and I've got a few other goals unrelated to health and fitness that are also taking time.
These will be the majority of my focus for this month. By the end of it, I should have the basic framework for a routine, as well as a plan for the rest of the year, and some specific goals I can use as milestones along the way. I intended to start checking in here more often, though I'll start with once a month and see where that goes. Here's to a new year.
