We finally have a plan

Sunday, June 23, 2019

Life is getting better every day and I am so very pleased to be able to say that. The very charming Speech Therapist came 3 times - each time encouraging my husband to try and eat more things. Today we are having hamburgers with french fries - finally something fun to eat. I will say that all the soups have been tasty and probably much better for us both, but it's been a long time since we've had hamburgers. We've done a lot of vegetable soups with a variety of vegetables cut up small, the last batch included some very tender chicken.

These past couple of week Tom had two tests at the Urologist - one to check the function of his bladder which seems to be working perfectly. The other was to check in on the prostate which apparently isn't! As, apparently, is very common as men age, my husband's prostate has gotten larger but it has also grown a kind of lip or flap which gets in the way when the bladder opens - hence the issue with urination. So we are preparing for surgery. There is a very long name for it 'Transurethral Laser Vaporization of the Prostate'. Apparently, instead of cutting away the offending tissue they use some kind of wire that goes back and forth "vaporizing" it. The doctor has done this procedure many times with great success and the good news is that life just may get back to some level of normal by the end of July! The surgery is scheduled for July 8th with at least one overnight stay, possibly two.

My life is still kind of in flux but my husband is starting to help with a few things and I am able to get away a little bit more. There is either less work to be done or we have gotten into a routine of what needs to be done each day - either way things are better and I wanted to share with all of you wonderful Spark friends.

Hope you are all having a good Sunday.

Great news that it is able to have a surgical procedure to make things better for your husband. As we age we never know what surprises are going to get us. Nice that you are able to a bit more free, and that your husband has been feeling somewhat better to help you some. All the best of results for him after the surgery.

What happy news that DH is doing so much better. So sorry to read that surgery is in the near future. Hope his recovery is swift and he's back to normal soon. It makes life easier when you have help, even for the smallest of chores. It must make him feel better, too, to know he's taken some of the load from you.

Prayer and warm thoughts of you and DH for the days ahead. emoticon emoticon

So glad things are looking better, you are getting breaks, and Tom's eating is improving. It makes such a difference to have a good ST. Whenever my parents have been pleased with a PT, case manager, etc from a nursing agency, I call to let the person in charge know. Yes, prostate problems are so common. Seems like almost every male relative over 60 has a prostate issue. Have an uncle who had surgery for an enlarged prostate 5 or 10 years ago. It went well. Not sure if there was a flap issue too.

Glad to hear that your husband is eating better. The surgery sounds safe. I am sure that method is the best way to do that procedure. Make sure you take a few minutes for yourself to recharge. Even if you go & sit outside for a while, and try & relax & listen to the birds.

Kathy, this is truly good news! I have to admit, I was worried about your husband a couple of months ago, when you reported that he had lost his appetite, couldn't swallow, and couldn't be persuaded to eat. How wonderful that things have turned around so, and now you two are enjoying hamburgers and french fries together! And after the surgery, it seems he'll be good as new, so Yay, my friend!
