Home Sweet Home

Wednesday, July 10, 2019

When things start to happen, they happen! Tom called me this morning just after 7 am - Daisy and I were heading out for our walk. The doctor had already been there and as soon as he had his breakfast the nurse was going to start the preparations for him to go home. Because I didn't want another drive in rush hour traffic, I told him I'd be there about 9:30.

As I walked into the surgery recovery area there he was, walking, without anything hanging from his body. A first in almost 3 months. He looked disheveled but healthy. I went to the room and the nurse came in with discharge papers. He came back and she said she had a call in to the Doctor but Tom could get dressed and get ready to leave. We were out of that hospital before 10:30!

So we are home now. He's showered and I have made a nice chicken salad for our lunch. Of course, being the person he is he is questioning every little ache and pain. I provide answers but I'm pretty sure he doesn't believe me - even though I know I'm right. His body has been through quite a trauma and it needs time to heal, period! I love that his mind works so quickly but some days I wish there was an off switch!

Life will begin to go back to normal. He is only restricted with activities for one week, although I'm sure he will push that out to two. I said "listen to your body and do what feels right". He doesn't seem to understand that so maybe this is a learning experience for him.

Thank you again for all your kind words and support, it has meant the world to me. I have been doing my best to take care of myself. I got home about 3:30 yesterday afternoon and did pretty much nothing for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Daisy and I watched a couple of silly Hallmark Christmas Movies and I got a little caught up on computer things. Today will be another day like that with some good stretching this evening. My knees have really been bothering me with all this sitting so it's time to get myself back to the gym.

I appreciate each and every one of you!

Fabulous news on Tom coming home. I know little by little he will heal and get back to his routine. I hope you can get back to your routine also...you have done a terrific job of taking care of your hubby but I know first-hand caregiving is exhausting.

Take some time for yourself dear Kathy...you SO deserve it!

So glad he has been released. I hate how they discharge. It always seems like we don't know when it will actually happen until an hour or 2 before and then boom you have to be ready. Sleep is so healing. I bet he sleeps so much better at home than at the hospital where they can walk in at any time. Hope you too can get lots of rest and enjoy your favorite routines. He is lucky to have you!

Glad your hubby is home. Be patient he’ll be a pain for a while probably and things won’t move as quickly as you both hope. The body takes time to heal.
    Praying always

You had a similar experience with your knee. So, use yourself as an example to him.
Much success to both of you. And, yes, rest and sleep is needed for healing.

"There's no place like home" is so very true. No doubt for both of you. I smiled at the "off switch" comment. I wish there could be an off switch for many things in life. I admire your abundance of patience. Except for my children when they were young, I was never meant to be a nurse. I just don't have what it takes. It's wonderful that you are taking care of you. Cheers to a return to normal.

Thanks for keeping us updated. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Sounds like Tom was so looking forward to being home. It must be a relief for both of you to put the hospital stay behind you. I hope he continues to have a smooth recovery and can relax and start to worry less about little aches and pains. Hope you're soon back into your independent routines and that you'll be free to go to the gym again, Kathy, and lessen your joint pain. Here's to getting back to normal!

So good to hear that Tom was released from the hospital today,. Hospitals are great when you need them, but nice when the release you to go home. One week to not be doing anything with a lot of movement is not to much to ask of one, after some surgeries. Now the two of you can get back to normal routines soon. I would think he should have enjoyed the chicken salad, as so many people don't like hospital food. Wishing Tom a speedy recovery.
