McKenzie Pass and Down to Chamult

Sunday, August 18, 2019

Monday morning we headed for the old McKenzie Pass via the town called the Sisters. Much of this is limestone left from some volcanic eruptions. There is a sight at the top of the pass that has sightings of the different mountains around this area. We then traveled down the pass through some old growth forest of which some have burned off since the last time I was there. It was heartbreaking to see. We had lunch at the bottom of the pass and then got on the new road that took us back up to the Sisters and then Bend and ending up in a little town called Chemult for the night.

Tuesday morning we headed for Crater Lake and I was pleased that I had bought a Senior Pass a few years ago that gets a car into national parks and other national buildings. Crater Lake is beautiful! Because of the cold winter, spring and summer we could not go all the way around the crater but we did see much of it. It is possible to walk down to the lake and even swim in it but it is quite a hike and so we did not try. We did take the Trolley tour which was very nice and had a Park Ranger as our guide who was very informative. There was so much to see that we had to pick and choose and then get on the road to Roseburg where we spent the night. Roseburg is in the southern part of the Willamette Valley and is great farming country.
