Roseburg to Coos Bay
Tuesday, September 10, 2019
We left Roseburg and the Willamette Valley and went through the Coast Mountains to Coos Bay where I had lived from about 16 months until the end of the sixth grade. When I left Oregon in ’64 there was a small town called Empire that was on the ocean side of the Coos Bay. The town of Coos Bay incorporated Empire into it in 1965. North Bend is at the top of the bay and Coos Bay on the land side of it.
We went to Shore Acres and looked around seeing the sea lions out on the rocks. They had not been there when I was younger. Shore Acres was bought by the state of Oregon in 1942. It has beautiful gardens and a glass house at the top of the cliff that my Mom told me was destroyed during a storm. The waves came over the cliff and broke the windows. If you go to the edge of the cliff and look down it is hundreds of feet to where the ocean is. It is beautiful and well worth seeing.
We also stopped at Sunset Bay and Basindor Beach where I had spent many enjoyable days as a little girl.
We spent the night in Coos Bay quite exhausted.
