Not only is it necessary for us to realize that we need to be strong and courageous in the face of opposition from organizational evil done by "common humans", but it is also important that we find that we are too weak to stand up for ourselves let alone stand in the gap with and for our neighbor.

The RCL readings I'm doing for this week (beginning on Sunday, the 1st day of our week) Jeremiah 32:1-15 and Psalm 91:1-16
Amos 6:1-7 and Psalm 146
1 Timothy 6:6-19
Luke 16:19-31

I hear from the psalmist not to trust the movers and shakers who trust in themselves and their riches. Those plans they make perish but we trust God who brings justice to the oppressed, food to the needy. God does not perish, nor do his plans for us. It is He who watches over strangers, those who are deserted and deprived, folks who are abandoned and ignored. God does this often by His people who live as aliens in this land themselves because they are citizens of the Kingdom of God. When we stand in the gap we are disciples of Jesus. If we prefer the couches of the lounge lizards and attend to the advice of those who've chosen the depraved mind, we become disciples of Satan in corrupting humanity and Creation.

So, plenty of nice people like the comfortable life and plenty of weirdos like me make nice people uncomfortable. I choose to stand in the gap with Jesus, not with those who oppress the needy and celebrate themselves. I believe true health is found not consuming the hopes and dreams of the oppressors who are among every nation, tribe, city, ethnicity, income level, and more. Those who have false hope in this world will find their wish fulfilled when dust returns to dust. Truly living life on God's terms is holistic health plan we find by seeking God first.

I will not stand with those who are doing shameful things and are traitors to humankind. I will stand where I belong, for it is not I who am worthy but God and my neighbor. I will stop walking backwards down the stairs trying to get higher. I am not bitter, because bile in my mouth and soul cannot occupy the same place as good food shared with those who God considers worthy, the same place where praise and encouragement are pronounced to honor others and not myself.

But I will stand in the gap, I will be one they need to move out of their way, I will speak the truth in love, and will tell them "No". I am a servant, just not a servant of the abusers.
