Five Things

It seems as if I'm constantly starting over. I had such high hopes when 2019 began, but all that was quickly unraveled due to inflammation and hives. For five months, I was in a constant battle against my body, seeing a myriad of doctors and taking so many tests and medications. Finally, in mid-May, my allergist got the combo right and the hives gradually faded away. I still can't eat any food with probiotics in it (turns out, I'm allergic to some of the good bacteria you're supposed to have!), and I still have to take like seven pills a day (mostly Pepcid, because that's what finally got rid of the hives), but things are much, much better. However, right when my health stabilized, the rest of life went insane!

Summers are always a difficult time for me, because suddenly my job as a stay-at-home mom becomes a 24/7 thing as my kids get out of school, plus we suffer through 100+ temps daily for about five months straight. This year was even worse. Starting at the beginning of June, our life went like this:

- graduation
- surgery (oldest son)
- surgery (husband)
- college orientation (cross country trip)
- trip to the Appalachian Trial (oldest son)
- major surgery (husband) including several weeks of recovery
- stove explosion in our house, thankfully NOT injuring middle son, plus ensuing repairs etc
- oldest son denied a previously given college scholarship (long story, not his fault) and suddenly could no longer go to college as planned
- my doctor put me on an injectable medication that supposedly helps with weight loss for women with PCOS, but it just made me sick for two months straight
- oldest son joined the navy and got a nearby job while he waited to ship out (job included me driving him back and forth to work several times a day)
- husband left to Wisconsin for his brother's wedding
- younger children started school

And that just takes us to the end of August! Since then it's just been constant scrambling and plans going up in smoke - the navy kept changing my son's ship date - but finally he is off to the next part of his life and things have (somewhat) calmed here. Still a lot of projects going on, but I've begun to put a lot of thought into my future.

In the past, I've had a lot of ambition for starting over and tackling my health. A lot of those plans have been based on former versions of myself, the person who already had enough healthy habits that she could take on grander ambitions. They've been too much too quickly, and impossible to stick to. My present self is a lot like my 2011-self, just starting on a weight loss journey. Since my 2011-self was very successful, I'm taking some lessons from her. Starting today, I'm focusing on little goals - VERY little goals - to begin a longterm trend toward better health. Five tiny things I can keep up with even while life continues to be full of Projects and Busyness.

1. Yoga 5x/week, with optional gentle stretching on non-yoga days
2. Actually track my water and aim for 10+ glasses daily
3. Eat one whole fruit daily, at least 6x/week
4. Eat one whole vegetable daily, at least 6x/week
5. Put my phone away by 9pm at the latest, in a location away from my bed

Optional Bonus: Cut coffee to one cup per day.
Optional Bonus: Any planned exercise on top of the yoga.

I have yet to decide if/how to reward myself for achieving these goals. I'm not always a rewards-focused person and tend to find accomplishment more enticing than potential reward. But we'll see. In the meantime, starting today, there are just Five Things.

    Sounds like you have a good plan and writing it down is a good thing. I do best when I keep a paper checklist with me each day, especially if I can't get on Sparkpeople right away. Then I can record on Sparkpeople at end of day. Good luck.
