Holiday Horrors

Saturday, November 23, 2019

I've been struggling with staying on track with my diet and exercise routines the majority of this year. I keep going back and forth between feeling motivated and feeling depressed, I had some self control during Halloween, and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. I'd love to hear some tips you all have on staying motivated and on track during the holidays!

"Play the whole tape through" was advice I got from a wise woman once. It's easy to get a bit excited about the food, the spread...especially when those around us are exclaiming over it. But, if we play the tape through in our mind, we see that we want to avoid feeling too full and too regretful, thereby ruining the meal. The truth is, we can end up feeling awful after over indulging. Or, we can make a plan to come to the table with an appetite, eat only what we like, leave food if it's not as good as we thought it would be, and take small portions because we really only taste the first couple of bites of each food anyway. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

Nibble on veggies and drink a full bottle of water before you plan to eat Thanksgiving dinner. Take smaller portions. Wait 10 minutes after you finish that plate before considering going back for seconds.

I remine myself often to focus on the fun/ family/ conversation not the food. It helps me be engaged with what is important

Choose only a couple of things that you don't get any other time of the year. Easy on the carbs. Choose veggies instead. Drink lots of water. Keep on exercising. Go for a walk.

I've had years when I eat and gained and ones where I ate moderately and lost for the week as only indulged the one day. Mostly have a plan but don't beat yourself up if you maybe indulge a bit more than planed and try to get back on exercise and food plan the next day. Maybe even exercise on Thanksgiving if you can.

First of all, don't try for weight loss during the holidays. It's totally frustrating!

DO plan your nutrition! Helps that urgent feeling dissipate -- no "What am I gonna eat?" You have it ready.

    Keep up w/exercise.
