Day 6: Rescuing St. Nicholas

Friday, December 06, 2019

I did not grow up with American traditions, Christmas or otherwise, and truthfully, this Santa Claus business has always been a thorn in my side. Who makes this stuff up anyway? (No offense anyone - my blog.)

Happy St. Nicholas Day!

Happy weekend y'all.
Do something fun!

Thank you for reminding us about St Nicholas. I will spend more time reading about him this season.

It's too commercialized for me. I introduced the German traditions to the kids when they were little and it is up to them now what they do with them. I enjoy it when the family gets together and that's enough for me.

I have very mixed feelings about Christmas, too. Happy and very unhappy memories, including my father saying when we were all little that he was going to shoot Santa Claus. He was not at all a violent man and didn't mean this at all--he just thought it was funny and clearly didn't understand child psychology.

So I've made Christmas in my family here in Japan mostly about good food (get a turkey at the local Costco) and a cozy house. I haven't done Christmas shopping in a very long time, which I felt guilty about for a while, but now I'm free of that guilt and just enjoy the family togetherness.

Hope you have happy holidays! It's always great to be off work!

Society is full of constructs. I've questioned most things devised by human minds.

Christmas traditions can start with you. Do whatever makes you happy!

I missed the German Christmas Bazaar this year. So no Stollen and no chocolate Nikolaus. 😢 Am baking Stollen right now
