Documentary: "That Sugar Film"

Tuesday, January 21, 2020

I watched this video yesterday after seeing an article by SparkGuy recommending it. The documentary is about how much hidden sugar we consume on a daily basis. The main character of the film undergoes an experiment where for 60 days he will intentionally eat 40 teaspoons of sugar per day by eating foods that are basically marketed as "healthy". The intent is to see how eating this much sugar affects his mood, weight, blood values, etc. He is monitored by a doctor, nutritionist and others.

There's a lot of good historical information in the film which I found interesting. The film also discusses sugar's effect on your body and brain.

Before the experiment he was sugar free and ate approximately 2300 calories per day allocated as follows: 50% fat, 26% protein and 24% carbs.

Since I follow a mostly vegetarian diet, most of the food I eat is comprised of what I call "good" carbs such as whole grains, vegetables (both starchy and green), beans, some fruits, nuts, seeds, etc. The film does not really go into the types of carbs he does eat except for green vegetables.

I came away from the film thinking I should drastically reduce these food items if I want to be sugar free. I'm not sure that's the way to go.

As soon as I finish the 21-Day New Member Challenge I plan to start the 21-Day Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge. I'll be curious to see how SparksPeople approaches a "sugar-free" diet.

The documentary is available on Amazon Prime.
