It's So Much Fun To Get Old

Saturday, February 15, 2020

It dawned a frosty 26 this morning and there's a bit of a breeze but the sun is shining like a promise - and the promise I'm hoping for is springtime! I don't know if it was the wine or the carbs or the beef fat but I crashed into bed early last night and woke at midnight with all the lights on in a house of snoring darlings. Usually my dogs sleep outside but the forecast was for the temperature to drop to 19, still not so cold they can't cuddle up in their little doghouse but hey - the older we get the more we pamper the dogs. So at the witching hour I put on a coat and took the pups out for a short starlit stroll. Orion was in the west and Leo, right overhead. So many glittery stars sparkled in the sky it was like some cosmic jewelry store display. When I turned to walk back to the house, both dogs dashed up to the front door - so, of course, they spent the night inside. Callie on the green couch and Juno on the blue. There was a time when the rule was No Dogs On The Furniture. Ha - if the old me could only see the present me. She'd scold like a shrew and shake her head.

It's so much fun to get old.

Actually - it IS fun to get old. Things that bring joy now include:

Spoiling dogs
Being comfortable with my own dirt
Enjoying the time to clean up my own dirt
Knowing nobody expects me to be Sexy, Beautiful, Smart, Sharp, Perfect
So the slightest evidence that I am sexybeautifulsmartsharp really impresses people
If you have been both lucky and saving, money blooms in your bank account
You don't have to wear heels
You can wear heels if you want to

are you seeing a pattern here? The older you get, always assuming you are moderately healthy, the more you get to do what you want. And that is .... That is just the coolest thing.

May we all get to grow old.

    Yep, yep. It IS.
We love sitting outside at 3 a.m. in the dark with the dogs and our morning coffee. Those same stars, that same cold. I’ll be thinking of you

We live in 55over active adult community. LOVE IT! Always something to do and always someone to do it with. I tell my kids that it's a lot like being in college; you can sleep when you want, eat when you want, drink when you want plus there's no studying or the stress of grades! No worries about body shape, bad hair, etc. because we're old enough to know those are not the things that matter. Yep, it's a good life!

Oh, I am SO with you on it being fun to grow old. Even though I am not healthy and some say that I'm not old. emoticon

Most of our friends are older than we are and some have more than a decade on us. So, to them, we're youngsters. They scoff at us being in our 60's.

And, then we have folks I'd consider friends that are in their 20's.

Life is grand! And, growing old is one of its pleasures.

Beautifully written, Bess! Hugs to you!!

I'm with you. Love being old-er! "assuming you are moderately healthy, the more you get to do what you want" rings oh, so true!

BWAHAHAHA! That “no dogs on the furniture” rule lasted a nanosecond in this house! LOL

Yes, getting older has it’s perks for sure! Definitely self-assured, mistakes – well they happen, but they’re opportunities for learning vs. beating myself up, enjoying the moment – definitely. LOL! My feet would stage a major coup if I wore high heels! I can’t even imagine. LOL It would not be a pretty sight.

And I feel blessed to be here another day to get to do things! Whether they’re things I have to do or want to do – I still get to do them! And I frame my mind such that it’s not a obligation, but rather MY CHOICE to do (or not). That’s empowering.

Sleep as late as we want.
Spend our days as we please.
    Decide what duties to assume.
The list goes on and on....
