19 Years to the Day

Thursday, February 20, 2020

Monday was 19 years to the day that Dale Earnhardt passed. He was on the last lap of the Daytona 500 when he hit the wall going an estimated 25 mph. He was not wearing his safety harnesses correctly. Instead of putting blame where blame lies, the owner of the company who made the harnesses, Bill Simpson, was blamed. I spoke with him not long after, and he was devastated - he had to leave the company he built and start all over again.

Fast forward to last Monday. Ryan Newman was in 1st place on the last lap of the Daytona 500. He was bumped from behind, hit the wall, was hit again and tumbled in the air. The car landed upside down and on fire.

The impressive part of the whole story is that Ryan was release from the hospital yesterday and walked out hand in hand with his girls. It's a great reminder to all of us to follow safety guidelines no matter what we do. It's sometimes a matter of life and death.
