What We Humans Need

Saturday, May 23, 2020

Once upon a time, years ago, I memorized a list of needs that an outstanding teacher had created for her poor class in Mississippi. They were:

I believe she tried to list them in the order that, without them, we would perish.
She included 'love' because of Failure to Thrive. It's real; we need each other. Caring about each other keeps us alive.

I have found this list useful at many times, and in many regards, over the years. Today I am thinking about it because I wonder who is watching over our air and water quality? In the US, late on Friday March 28th, enforcement of EPA regulations was suspended indefinitely. Will they be reinstated? When? Is another organization looking out for all humans in this regard?

I need clean air and clean water for optimal health. So do all humans. Today I am thankful for anyone looking out for us in that regard.

Yes: so much of our way of life depends upon trusting each of us to do our "jobs".

Very important list. I hope that this pandemic will bring some of us back to some common sense and caring for ourselves and each other. Be safe. Be kind. emoticon

This reminds me of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. These are the basic things that we need to survive. Love was definitely one of them besides food and water. You are right we need and depend on one another to survive.

Spot on! And the EPA is no longer the Environmental Protection Agency...left unchecked in November we will see air, water & food quality deteriorate continually. I will not continue as I am sure you are not asking for a political commentary...one thing the pandemic has shown us is "we do affect the environment" and the earth can repair itself if we only heed it's warnings.

I hear you, Alicia, and am thinking and wondering the same.

We've had interesting conversations during family reunions. I am, by far, the greatest outlier in many regards. We got into a conversation regarding water during one such gathering. after I'd seen a photo of my DH's uncle with the head of the U.S. Department of the Interior. His uncle was (don't believe he still is) the head of the water board for their region within the reservation and perhaps it was the entire reservation..

It's easy to give such things no mind when fresh, clean, healthy air and water are readily available ... until they're not.

I wonder about our collective values. And, often think of the admonitions of our parents, our mother in particular, as we tidied our campsite as our vacation came to a close: let's leave this place at least as clean, if not cleaner than what we found it.

Thanks! This is a beautiful reminder of the difference between wants and needs! I may steal the list for my class next year!

**SIGH** I just pray common sense enters into the equation of how things are being handled federally. So far, not so much.

Yes, that list follows Maslow's Heirarchy of needs to a "t'.

HUGS and have a good weeknend.
