Yikes! Not today Satan!!

Sooo, while I am still a proponent of *not* using the number on the scale as the “end all, be all” indicator of one’s wellness, it is still one of many tools in our toolbox. And today’s weigh-in was no exception.
While I was alarmed by the number, I can’t say I was entirely surprised. Work stress, life stress, societal upheaval, lack of sleep, inconsistent nutrition, poor food choices, increased alcohol consumption and less exercise are all playing a role in my weight being back up 9lbs. Thankfully my clothes are not feeling it because I’m still so much smaller but what the number on the scale did was quickly identify that I was headed in the direction opposite of where I want to go. (I should probably also take my measurements as my clothing size is also down.) Basically, not shying away from the scale has allowed me to sound the alarm to myself.
So I’m all about being solution-oriented. One of the things I did yesterday was toss just about all of the junk food in my house, with the exception of a few small, bite-sized treats. My housemate has been comfort-baking since the pandemic struck so I am committed to not having sweets in the house unless it’s what he so-generously shares with me from time to time. I am working on cultivating a sweet tooth satisfied primarily by fruit and snacks that utilize fruit like lo-cal smoothies, yogurt and oatmeal. I also need to ease up on salty snacks like tortilla chips and limit even my favorite—Trader Joe’s olive oil airpopped popcorn. I need to increase my water intake and make sleep and relaxation a priority again. And lastly, and this is a a big one—I need to move more during the day. Despite having a consistent workout routine, I am absolutely moving less during my workday as compared to when I worked on campus and had to actually leave my office and sometimes had to trek 1/2 a mile to get to a meeting. All that activity adds up and my body is feeling the difference in painful and profound ways.
So there you have it—that’s the plan. There will always be setbacks but I remain committed to creating a better and more balanced lifestyle that includes holistic wellness and different health outcomes than what I’ve seen in my family so far as we age. And I’m really glad y’all are along for the ride.
