In June of 2016 I joined my first 5% Challenge. I was very sceptical. I had several health issues including COPD and supplemental oxygen dependant.
There are several teams within the 5% challenges. I joined the Shooting Stars that first day and have remained a Shooting Star ever since. But I am getting ahead of myself.
In 2016 I also found out I had a brain aneurysm. In September 2016 I had brain surgery and they put in a stent. When I came home it was back to exercising because I was not ready to give up. I have 5 precious grandchildren to watch grow up and a loving husband.to grow old with.
I finally got the all clear but there was another hiccup. I developed another rare condition. There is no cure for this but it is now stable so that is equivalent to being in remission. I have to have it checked once a year as long as it remains stable.
During all of this the Shooting Stars were so encouraging. I actually got out of my wheelchair and was doing some walking in 2016 but not very far. My weight got down under 300 for the first time in years! I was so happy.
In 2017 I had started taking some steps without the aid of my cane. By September I was up to half a mile. Then came another onset with my health. I was back to 500 step a day once again with my cane.
By February of 2018, I was up to 1500 steps. It looks like things were getting back on track again. In April, I hit 1.5 miles! I was ecstatic and the Shooting Stars were right there with me as always!
And then the one thing you would never expect to happen... In June of 2018 a few of the Shooting Star members organized a virtual 5K walk to walk at the same time I was going to try to walk 5k for the first time. I will never forget, it was so cold that day and the wind just really bit at your face. But DH and I walked 5K that day!! I was so exhausted and so sore by the time I got done but I did it! I could not wait to get back home to tell my team!! Several of the team members had walked with me that day and I will never forget that support.
I have had a lot of ups and downs since then with my health and I am back down to 200 steps a day. I remember one day in the hospital when I was at my worst and hooked up to all kinds of machines, the doctors told my DH he should call the family in to say their goodbyes. Well let me tell you what, those were fighting words! Then again when the first specialist diagnosed the aneurysm, he said if I even survived the surgery I would be on life support the rest of my life. Well those were fighting words too!
What I am trying to say is I am fighting for my life. I want to live and I want a better quality of life so I plan to keep doing everything I am able to do to make that happen. The best part of my journey has been finding the 5% challenges.
The 5% Challenges last 8 weeks at a time. We are currently getting ready for the Summer 5% Challenge. Team members will work towards losing 5% of their starting weight in 8 weeks by participating in team challenges that focus on exercise & healthy lifestyle habits. Members in maintenance are also welcome. Let’s have fun, make new friends and get in shape!
