Day 269: Swimming in the cold ocean

Hi Everyone

I hope you are all doing well. Today is day 269 of my 10+ fitness minutes streak. This is easily my best streak ever in terms of consistency. A big reason for this is also tracking my daily average minutes.

This way, the 10 minute hurdle keeps me consistent and then that consistency gets me excited to keep hitting my average.

Lately my 14yo son and I have been swimming in the VERY cold ocean around here about 2-3 times per week as part of our cold water training. The ocean here is usually between 54-58 degrees, which is REALLY REALLY cold! It is interesting to note that we can tell a major difference between 54 and 58 degrees. 54 is brutally cold, 58 not so bad. The water in Northern California isn't that much warmer than the water in Alaska. There are only 2 currents in CA. One is a cold water one that goes up to Alaska. The other is a warm water current that goes down to Mexico. These currents meet in Southern CA right by Santa Barbara.

So far we're staying in for 15-35 minutes. Yesterday was our longest at 37 minutes as part of his birthday celebration.

In addition to swimming, we also like to bodysurf the waves. When the waves are going strong, this is as fun as being at a waterpark and a bit more dangerous, we just make sure to protect our head.

Yesterday a treat was having 2 pelicans come close to us -- one flew by at nearly water level only 20 feet from us -- the other hovered nearby before diving for a fish. Pelicans are HUGE.

This is my favorite workout now. My son is starting to get some muscle definition from this swimming.

My youngest just went back to school, but he's doing distance learning to start the year. Hopefully they can get back into school soon. The oldest starts next week.
