(#1) Put Your Motivation Where You Can See It!

Sunday, December 06, 2020

There's a saying that goes, "out of sight, out of mind," and there's actually some truth to that. How often do you find something hidden in a drawer or closet and go, "I forgot I had that!"
Dr. Santos of Yale University shares in her free online course, "The Science of Wellbeing" a tip called situation support. Studies show that convenience and visibility affect our habits. For instance, if you have candy on your desk in front of your face and within arm's reach, you're likely to eat more candy than if the candy was in a drawer where you couldn't see it or further away where you couldn't reach it. This tip can help us with creating a fitness habit, too!
By creating a vision board and putting it where you can see it, putting your workout clothes where you can see them and get to them easily, by having easier access to workouts or planned workouts so you don't have to think about them so much, by following accounts on social media that post about their workouts, nutrition, and/or mental health, you can help keep your journey on the forefront of your mind.

Some of the things I do to help keep my journey on my mind is pin motivation and inspiration on Pinterest so means health and fitness things end up in my feed more often, follow fitness and mental health accounts on instagram for the same reason, and created a motivational wall calendar. I also have a daily checklist up on my wall to remind me which days I need to do physical therapy, which days to stretch, which workouts I'm doing, making sure I walk and do yoga every day, etc. Surrounding myself with reminders of my goals and my why creates situation support where I can get inspiration and motivation without additional effort on my part.

What's something you do for situational support?
