First, I want to say that my Christmas was EXACTLY what I imagined. It was perfect, except we had to watch "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and it's SO BAD. I could write an essay on all the things I hate about that movie, so of course, my son loves it. But everything else was wonderful. We had all our pillows and blankets, ate a ton of fatty food, and the next morning, there were presents, panettone, and a really lovely dinner.
Now it's the day after, and I came to a realization. I really like beer, and ever since lockdown started, I've been keeping it in the house. In the past, we rarely kept alcohol. When we went out to restaurants or bars, we would order beer if we wanted to. I mean, if we saw a really good deal on a beer that we like, or if we were planning a party or holiday, we might buy some, but it just wasn't on our radars for the most part.
When COVID hit, we couldn't go to restaurants anymore, and we still can't. I mean, we CAN legally, but we don't. So I started buying beer at the store for the house, and it's becoming a problem. Not a drinking problem, but a weight loss problem.
With the beer here in the house, I am drinking far more frequently than I used to, and it's really cramping my weight loss style. It's like bringing regular soda into the house. Every can of beer I drink is as bad or worse than a can of full-sugar pop. I would never bring pop into the house like that.
I've tried compromises with myself, because I do really like beer. Only on holidays, only after a few weeks, I'll buy it only every other time I'm at the store, but it's all so mushy and open for interpretation, so I decided today to make it simple:
No more alcohol until I've lost 40 pounds.
That takes off all my COVID weight plus some.
It's simple, and there are no questions. Can I have this beer? No, I cannot. May I make Gluehwein? No, I may not. Glass of wine at a fancy dinner sometime in the non-COVID future? Nope. Visit to a brewery? Won't happen.
Some people say you shouldn't give up everything you like when you lose weight, and they're probably right. But I'm not giving up EVERYTHING I like, just alcohol. I do think this is the one thing I can do right now that will have the biggest effect on my success, and I need success.
