Museum Selfie Day
Selfies are routinely associated with vanity, but what if they could also promote engagement with cultural, historical, and artistic institutions? That's the aim of Museum Selfie Day, which takes center frame today. Mar Dixon, a Londoner who runs a website devoted to culture and art, came up with the idea for the day after visiting some museums with her young daughter. She thought having such a day could promote awareness about the pieces housed in museums, and that it would encourage people to visit museums—perhaps even bringing in people who never visit them.
On the day, selfies are taken inside and outside of museums, or with ticket stubs to exhibitions, and are posted on social media with the hashtag #MuseumSelfie. Selfies taken on the day are shared, as are selfies that have been taken during the days leading up to the day. Although photography is often prohibited at museums, numerous museums around the world have embraced Museum Selfie Day, by encouraging visitors to take selfies and by posting their own selfies.
Celebrate the day by going to a museum, taking a selfie, and posting it on social media using the hashtag #MuseumSelfie! If you have a museum selfie from a recent visit, you could post it instead of taking a new photo. Check to see if your favorite museum or a museum near you is officially participating in the day. You could even take a selfie at the Museum of Selfies. Check the official Museum Selfie Day Twitter and Instagram pages for more information and to see some great museum selfies!
