Couch to 5K

Saturday, January 19, 2008

So a few weeks back, I decided that I needed to kick my exercise routine into a higher gear. I've been walking everyday (or nearly everyday) for a year and it feels wonderful to get outside and enjoy the day with my daughter and stepson. But I realized that to make this a life change I need to pick up the pace on my exercise, have a goal. I love to cook, absolutely love it and I enjoy eating what I create, but while trying to lose weight it's hard. Even when I make healthier substitutions, I'm not at my goal weight so I still am eating fewer calories that I would be if I were maintaining. Anyway, I decided that I would train for and run in a 5K. My good friend took up the challenge with me, whew, we're not runners, not even joggers, we're walkers at the most. But we both decided this would be a good challenge for us physically and mentally, knowing that we could do it. So two weeks ago we started the Couch to 5K program, the first week wasn't too bad, it was actually kind of exciting to be able to complete the workouts.
But this past week has been week two, while T has had very little trouble with the increased time I have been struggling. Today was the third workout of the week and T and I got together so we could workout together, support each other, and gauge where we are. Hopefully, we can do it every week. But I have to tell you, by the end of that I thought I was going to fall over. I've been running on the treadmill because it works with my schedule but outside (hills and all) is a whole different ball game.
Anyway, we talked about how good it was to have a buddy because we both probably would have quit by now if we didn't have someone to really be accountable to. It's good to know that you can make healthy choices and not only have the support of your friends and family but be supporting them as well. Despite the rain and cold today I really felt like it was a huge accomplishment and it feels good!!

Couch to 5k is awesome - don't get discouraged if you feel like things are too hard. It is totally normal to repeat a week before you move on, keep that in mind.

What week are you on now?

One cool thing that I found for c25k is that there is an itunes podcast for every week. the music isn't GREAT but at least you don't have to worry about timing yourself! I think it is posted by a guy named rob or something. Message me if you can't find it.

PS - thanks for the welcome :)

I am working on trying to run my first 5k in June and I have never been a runner and I was only a walker when made to walk. I can definently relate. I just got my hands on the c25k program last week and I have yet to start. I just brought my first treadmill last wed and I can't last no more than 5mins...WALKING! That scared me to death..LOL. I have been walking in the house to WATP's and going walking out every Sat, but I wanna get ready for this 5k so I commend you in starting. It has definently made me aware of what I need to focus on.
