I recently read Why We Get Fat And What To Do About it, by Gary Taubes, published 12/28/10. I first considered these concepts in his 2007 book, Good Calories Bad Calories which was written for the medical professional, and was DIFFICULT reading.
In this book, I found the concepts presented in a clear, concise and interesting way, which made me consider things in a whole new way. I've never been a "low-carb" person, but as a calorie-counter, it had a lot of value for me.
I was so impressed that I bought another copy of it as an audio book for future listening while driving and doing other activities.
Yesterday I received my February Reader's Digest in the mail and saw that this book was Featured on the Cover, and the article inside was excellent.
Handle With Care, by Jody Picoult - about a child born with osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bones that can snap with just a sneeze), whose mother decides to sue her obstetrition (who is also her best friend) for not informing her during the pregnancy that the infant was going to be severely disabled and giving her the option of terminating the pregnancy. As a Catholic, she never would have terminated the pregnancy, but she is planning to lie on the stand, saying her child should never have been born, purely in order to get a malpractice settlement that will provide for her daughter's needs later in life. I'm half-way through the book.
She changes everything She touches, and everything She touches, changes!
