when I worked downtown I kept McDonald's gift cards on hand all the time. That's what I gave to anyone panhandling.

Do they have gift cards like that in Malaysia?

I know I answered before. I feel like answering again.

I still believe in giving people money. If someone asks. I like to give them a couple dollars. I do listen to my gut and my gut usually says. You won't miss it. Whatever they do with that money? The ball is in their court.

The second are people who act like they are perfect. Especially when it comes to their diet.

Yes, I would and have given to a begger.

As many have said there are those who "claim" they are out of gas and ask for a few bucks. And where I live, there are those who set up "post" on a daily basis on the exit ramps of freeways.

While it's difficult to tell whose truly in need, around six months ago I noticed a "newbie" at an exit without the usual accoutrements as I was waiting for the light to change. What struck me was his lack of signage, bucket, pan or hat, and the fact that his clothes were both perfectly clean AND perfectly pressed. He was there over the next few days and then I realized something - the proximity of this exit to the casino! Though impossible to know for certain, putting two and two together it definitely seemed (to me) he was panhandling to gamble...SMH!

Having been duped too many times, I now only give food.

We are our brother's keeper emoticon

I have paid for restaurant meals anonymously when I see a needy person asking for "anything to eat" from the hosts. I give regularly to charity organizations, one which serves the homeless only. I don't give the persons holding up signs begging for money, as I have heard that they make more than most working people do. Those person are outlawed on corners where I live.

Thank you. I was once one of those unfortunates, and yes, I used the money for things I shouldn't have- but- we are *all* part of an immense tapestry of humanity, and I am now a productive member of society. So again, I say, THANK YOU.

Yesterday, I saw a man out asking for spare change in front of a restaurant. A young man came out and offered him a sandwich. The man refused. He wanted money, not food.

I had that happen to me before. Which is why I will only give food and not money to someone asking for spare change.

I've recently moved to a seaside town where there are a lot of homeless people (and, unfortunately others who pretend to be homeless.) There are too many for one person to help, so I often have to say no - and I sometimes say yes. I never give money but will sometimes buy them a hot drink or something to eat.

I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

To the people who claim they need gas money - no. Pot is legal here and many use that scheme to get money for their habit. Hubby actually had extra gas in a gas can and the person snorted and walked away.

However, at Walmart, I was approached on 2 different occasions by people wanting food. One was a young man asking if we had anything to spare. Had bought a loaf of fresh baked french bread and asked if that was ok. He nodded and held it up to his friend, sitting near the entrance, who then jumped up and motioned him over. He thanked me and ran to his buddy.

The other time, a very much older man came over to take my cart after I finished loading groceries. I said I got it, thinking he's about to ask for money. He said he doesn't ask for money but rather food as that is more important for him. I had bought a lot of frozen food but happened to have a bag of tangerines. I said that's the only thing I could offer and his eyes lit up. He said that was like getting gold. He put the bag into his backpack and thanked me saying the others would be so happy to have the tangerines. He took off, leaving the parking lot.

So, for people really needing food - yes. To the lady with the same story about needing gas money to get to Colorado City (30 miles away), that I see every 3 months (going on 2 years)- no.

It depends on the country. But I usually only give to older people... or people with disabilities. I also always give to people who are at least... "trying". I mean, like... I don't know about other countries but in Mexico, there are lots of people who aren't technically beggars but they do small, useless things for you and expect money in exchange. For example, in every single grocery store parking lot, there are guys who "help" you reverse out of your parking spot. But like, literally all they do is stand behind your car and they're like "keep going, keep going, yea, keep going". Totally useless but well, they could be stealing or doing something illegal instead, so I don't know. I always give them money, more than I probably should.

I always listen to my gut. If my gut feeling is to give them money. Then yes I do!

If I do give to an organization. I check out charity navigator. To find out how much goes to helping people or if the money is going to help the CEO buy a beach front condo in Boca

ALLEYCATTUS,

When I was in Greece, I was told not to give money to any of the women holding a baby asking for money for the baby or offering a rose for sale. There were lots of women doing just that in front of all the popular tourist spots.

Occasionally, when I'm on the subway, someone will get up and make a speech about how they were down on their luck and looking for help.

And yes, you have to wonder does that person really need help or are they looking for drug money.

Which is why I do prefer to give to charities that help those in genuine need.

While I was working in New York City, I would see a lot of folks begging. I've witnessed a lot of people in real need, but you never know if someone is begging for money to buy drugs or alcohol. IMO, Better to support the organizations for the homeless. Unfortunately, sometimes even they can't handle the numbers of people in need.

I do sometimes, I try to be as non judgemental as I can, but yes, there are scammers out there, and it isn't easy to know who is genuine and who is not.

I do sometimes.

I have also made bags with items in them. Water, snacks, toiletries, socks etc.

Even though I once stood behind an obviously homeless man. In a grocery store. When he opened his wallet, he had more cash than I did.

So many of these people fall between the cracks.

Like others, I give to charities that help those truly in need.

And it is true, there are "beggars" who make a lot of money begging at intersections or in front of Starbucks. that's why I'm a little wary of giving money.

However, to my neighbors who are living rough (on the streets), I've provided them with toothpaste, toiletries, soap, socks, mittens, etc. I've also given out fresh fruit like bananas or oranges. I've donated clothing in good shape to a local church to be distributed to homeless neighbors.

EOWYN, if you want to really help those in need, why don't you volunteer your time at your church ? I'm sure they must have programs to help those people who really are homeless. If you want to help, donate your time or maybe some clothing.

If you have pairs of shorts, pants or skirts that don't fit, give them to someone in need.

Don't you donate clothing ? That's what I do with clothes I wont wear anymore. I give them to the Salvation Army, Goodwill or church drive.

from time to time i will ask if someone is hungry/thirsty and go purchase food/drink for them. in india i can't help but give to the children sometimes, even though many of them are being exploited by these networks/gangs. otherwise i give to organizations to help address issues i hold dear to my heart.

The way I see it is what's in your heart? Is your heart judging that person or is it one of compassion? Do you find other ways to help them? Do you treat them with the kindness and respect they deserve as human beings? Or do you judge them for begging allegedly for a syndicate?

I typically don't give directly to beggars but I do give money to other organizations I know help.

Normally I don't because some of them could be working for a begging syndicate and I don't want to encourage them because the Malaysian government has allocated homes for them.

The reason they beg is because they think they can get more begging. That's why we are discouraged from giving to them.

What dyu think?
