I crochet too, though it has been a few years. I did baby blankets for all 3 of my kids and scarves when they were older, as well as for other family and friends. It was a great thing to do in the evenings while watching tv-no mindless eating. I also do cross-stitch, mostly ornaments and give them as gifts as well.

I haven't tried any of the animals. I am too intimidated by them. I venture out and find free patterns online and keep them in sheet protectors in a 3-ring binder. I have not tried all of the ones I have, but there are a few favorites that I do over and over again.

If all you have been able to do is a chain, keep trying. My grandmother started teaching me when I was a child (she died when I was 10), and when I was in high school, I picked up a hook and some yarn and pretty much taught myself. The website I mentioned before would really be helpful. He has a youtube tutorial series that is so incredibly easy to follow. He goes into great detail, starting with how to hold your hook, and how to figure out the best way to sit and arrange your yarn around you so you can work easier. It is all baby steps through the videos. Give him a look, you won't regret it.

I crochet! I was beginning to think it was a "lost art" since I really don't know many people who still do, and the stores around me have stopped carrying any kind of yarn. Wal-Mart and even the craft stores like Michael's and Hobby Lobby have reduced their yarn selection to almost non-existent. My tension varies somewhat because I can't really sit and work for long stretches because of my work schedule, so I usually do blankets rather than clothing items. I don't have a connection to make things for babies that have passed, but I do have a connection with a veterinarian who works with an animal shelter, and they are always needing blankets, especially during what she calls "kitten season". I buy yarn online from Herrschner's for projects, and all of the leftover yarn goes into "scrapghans" for the animals. The colors do not match, and I just start with the first yarn and go until I run out and then add the next color, then the next, until it is the size I want. They may not be pretty, but the animals don't mind. For the person that likes the large granny square, check out www.thecrochetcrowd.com. Mikey has a lot of youtube videos and one of them is called The Never-ending Granny Square. You work with 3, 5, or 7 skeins, all at once, doing 3, 5, or 7 rows all at once, and you never have to change yarns. It sounds complicated, but it is actually very easy once you get started, as well as addictive, and the result is really interesting. Unfortunately, I am also addicted to buying yarn, and I keep saying that I have enough yarn to last me until I die - then I go order more because with all of that yarn, I still never have the color I want for the next project! LOL!

Sorry to ramble, but I am SO EXCITED to find kindred spirits!

If I'm crocheting, I am not able to eat. Great distraction. For those that believe it's a waste of time, I encourage you to think about the mother that has delivered a child that she will not take home. The greatest honor I have had is being able to crochet little hats and blankets for children to be buried in. Use what gifts you have to help others. There is no wasted time in being able to give any amount of comfort to someone that is suffering. emoticon

How can crocheting or anything you make with your fingers be a waste of time when it produces JOY for the person crocheting the item as well as the recipient?[And sometimes, I ,myself, am the recipient!]
I LOVE to crochet but haven't in a while as my current hobby ,gardening, seems to monopolize my time since we moved to the country!
My favorite item to crochet is a baby blanket ! They are quick, easy and ALWAYS loved and appreciated! I have some photos of my work on my page [nearer to the bottom],if you'd like to see! I also scrapbook, make cards ,do quilling {paper filigree], make real- egg ornaments ,and do cake decorating!!! emoticon

I crochet and it's not a waste of time. A bit triggered by reading that comment.

I guess they don't realize all the awesome items you can make for charitable causes.

There are two things that I loathe.
One is Winter!
The second are people who act like they are perfect. Especially when it comes to their diet.

I have not crocheted in years, but my granddaughter wants one of the totes she saw at my house.
So I am going to see if these gnarly arthritic fingers can make her one... in purple.

Yes...have for a long time now! Currently working on a temperature afghan, and have about 4 other projects I want to get to...some for me and some for grand's....

What is your favorite crochet stitch/pattern?? I think my all time favorite is anything Irish Crochet...and anything Bavarian Stitch...even though my current projects have neither! LOL
