MANDIETERRIER1, good for you for working on new coping mechanisms!! I have recently begun walking more, but I still struggle with searching for food to use as a coping skill during times of stress.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

ARCHIMEDESII, thank you for sharing. I have chronic depression, but the times I've been in a serious major depression, I couldn't eat, so I understand what you mean about those times when eating feels impossible.

I appreciate your words of wisdom.

I do. I am working on finding new coping mechanisms. That don't include food.

I call it, the binge monster. I know it doesn't do anything good. Which is why I am working on finding other ways to cope.

MILLER-S,

When I'm really stressed out, I have the opposite reaction. I lose my appetite.

The first time I was laid off, I had a knot in my stomach that didn't start to unwind until I started getting calls for interviews. I had to force myself to eat in order to keep up my strength. I had friends who hadn't seen me in a while rave about how much weight I lost. They asked, how'd I do it ?

I had to reply,"I lost my job". :(

What I struggle with is eating out of boredom. If I'm busy, I don't want to eat. If I'm bored, I'll start to graze. which is why I keep most of the junk out of the house. if it's not there, I wont eat it.

the good thing is that as I have learned to live a healthier lifestyle, I have fewer urges to overeat because of boredom or stress. I do try to opt for stress relief that doesn't involve food. Usually that means taking a long walk or maybe hitting the gym now that I have a gym membership again.

One thing I do tell all members is to not beat themselves up because they aren't perfect. I wont say that no one is perfect. But what I do say is that you're not a machine who can eat right 24/7. we're all normal human being with normal human needs and emotions.

The fact is, some days I will overeat. As long as it doesn't happen every day, I am still way ahead of the game.

VICKYLYLES, it's good you've been able to stop eating when you're mad. I struggle with eating during both emotions (sadness and anger), but anxiety is a big trigger for me, too, as I have anxiety disorders. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I've been able to stop the eating when I'm mad. It took awhile. For the most part I don't overeat when I'm sad but did go over by 200 calories the other night when I was upset.

Anger has never been an issue, but I definitely used to overeat when I was sad or afraid or anxious. It never was a "feel sad so eat" thing, though --- sadness leaves me sleepless, which leaves me exhausted, so I would mindlessly eat whatever was available for energy since I couldn't sleep...

A few years in to healthier eating and learning to be more mindful, I now still eat more when sadness or fear or anxiety has left me sleepless and exhausted, but I carefully choose foods that I find physically and emotionally nourishing, and I turn the preparation and eating in to acts of conscious self-care. Instead of mindlessly grabbing handfuls of crunchy things or big bowls of sweet stuff, I now take the time to put together a hearty and nutritious meal of favourite items (it could be a plate full of mixed roasted veggies with some sliced meats and a tangy gravy or sweet peanut sauce, or it could be a homemade soup or stew, or it could be a plain omelet topped with mixed baked fruits and sharp cheese with a side of homemade sourdough - whatever I feel in the mood for). I take the time to plate the meal attractively, and purposefully take my time experiencing and savouring each bite. If I start feeling full before the "extra" meal is finished (which I usually do), then I put it away in the fridge to finish later.

While it certainly doesn't apply to everybody, I find that including physical nourishment as part of my self-care is both helpful and healthy, and I don't consider the extra meal or two to be "overeating".

Sir Terry Pratchett: "Science is not about building a body of known 'facts'. It is a method for asking awkward questions and subjecting them to a reality-check, thus avoiding the human tendency to believe whatever makes us feel good."

"The Inuit Paradox" ( discovermagazine.com/2004/oct/inuit-
paradox
): "...there are no essential foods—only essential nutrients. And humans can get those nutrients from diverse and eye-opening sources. "

No. Eating isn't going to resolve the cause of your emotions, but can certain add negatively to them.

Nope. That is definitely not a healthy way to deal with ANY emotions. I do work out when I can. If I am at work, I can take a few moments to step away from my desk.
