I had a physical today and she told me her only concern is my BMI. I'm close to the obese category. Everything else was perfect. I made my appointment for next year and will be working on getting that to healthy until then. I've never been told I was close to obese before

Many of my doctors have told me to lose weight. I think they should, esp. if it contributes to the health issues you may be suffering from.

My doctor did mention it to me. He said it would bring my Cholesterol down. He was rather casual about it. He told me if I lost 10 lbs it would make a difference. I didn't take offense at all. I was already concerned about my high cholesterol. The next visit or so he talked to me about losing weight and said something that frustrated me. He said if I eat less calories than I burn I would lose. I suppose he thought I didn't know. Ugh! I saw him every three months and each time he would mention my weight until I asked him too write me a script for a nutritionist. What ever I was doing to lose weight was not working. That was about the time I found Spark People. In theory it's easy to lose weight. In reality it wasn't so easy for me. I found out I had a slow Thyroid and I had a hard time moving because of a bad back. Fast forward to today. No more Thyroid problems, it disappeared! I'm losing consistently. I eat clean and exercise every day except Sundays. I feel great! emoticon

I'm thankful my doc stuck with me.

When at my heaviest, I didn't go to a doctor. However, while in my twenties and very thin after heavy dieting my gynecologist mentioned my weight loss and asked how I did it. I was borderline anorexic at the time and responded that I didn't eat. I probably needed professional help. I'll never forget his response: "Well, whatever works." I never went back.

My doctors have been with me through my adult life-having a baby, nursing, being pregnant, having a baby, nursing, being pregnant. repeat several times. lol. They've always been nice about any weight gain and loss. My thyroid doctor would give me nutrient print outs to help guide me (didn't work too well because I was a picky eater and wanted those endearing carbs) but he would also keep my thyroid meds on the higher end of my dosage so I would have the ENERGY to WANT to work out. I found that helpful. But SPARK has been my mainstay. I really don't think I could do this without Sparkpeople and I mean that. They've helped me through some injuries as well as major surgery / recovery. And I am now in a Breakthrough stage. Can't WAIT to visit my doc in a couple weeks to see the results of my spark work. :)

Yes. Several have some condescendingly (orthopedist and the doctor I have now are the only ones that wasn't so rude about it). I lost weight when I was younger, ended piling it back on. Doc noticed I had lost some and gained it back. They started giving me suggestions on losing weight (diets and exercising). I am walking more, trying to change my diet. May have to ask for help on my diet and see if they can contact my insurance on my behalf to see of they can help with paying for some the food since it will be medically necessary to do a drastic change (yes some insurances will help pay).

My doctor told me that I'd sleep better, have more energy, and my blood pressure would drop if I did. He never said, "Go, thou, and diet!"

He was right about the blood pressure part and most of the time I have more energy than I've had for a while. The jury's out on the topic of sleeping.

My doctor is interested in the complete picture and weight is a piece of that. When I gained about 60 pounds in two years and didn't to have change much in my life, she ran special diabetes tests that showed I was over the edge and now diabetic. She handed me Dr. Bernstein's book so help get the blood sugars under control. The weight loss happened with the blood sugar control.

I am Veteran of the US Army and I was told at my yearly physical that I was obese! I am 5'5 and I weighed in at 204lbs. In accordance to him, my max weight for my height is 140lbs. Granted I left the VA Clinic in tears. I was put on a weight loss plan that I failed miserably at. I tried a new plan this year and joined sparkpeople. I added this site to my plan this month. I am now 187 lbs and working toward at 160lbs. I am starting out slowly and eventually I will get to 140!! I love this site and it had helped me tremendously!!

He didn't tell me. I asked him "what would you think if I lost weight? Would you support me?" he answered "yes I would, you would be healthier, sleep better, on less medicine..." I've lost 30 pounds using SparkPeople, he is a great source of support. Yesterday I weighed 200, my staying weight was 230 in November last year.

No because I am underweight a little. Better that than to be overweight in my view for me.

He advises me too. Now that I'm down 17 pounds, he is reducing my medicine and is always supportive of my efforts. I go in for another checkup on Refund Day aka April 15th and I learn how much more weight I've lost! I've gone down a bra size! Doc reducing medicine and smaller bra size are motivation to continue exercising 3-6 days each week!

I was assigned a new Doctor recently because my other one moved. The new one is female and beautiful with the personality of a rock! I swear she has no feelings for her patients.I made the appointment for my checkup and to get my yearly bloodwork done and to make sure I can safely lose weight. She was more interested with the scale. My numbers are going down and all she could say was well you are too fat and need to lose weight..DUH!!

They've all tiptoed around saying that I need to. I'm always upfront with them saying I KNOW I need to lose weight. This current doctor I met while I was pregnant. All she said was that I needed to be careful to not gain too much weight and nothing more. But now that my son is 4 months old? She walked in and said 'Do you even realize that you are 15 pounds BELOW your prepregnancy weight? Who even does that? You are doing fantastic, keep up whatever you're doing!'

Lol, I love my current doctor. She is positive and it works much better than just telling patients that they're fat and to lose weight.

Yes...my doctors from years ago have, but my new doctors haven't said a word. I would think that every doctor of an overweight patient should bring this topic up. I think some of these doctors are uncomfortable to bring it up, or don't have the time to go the extra mile.

Yes, but he did not say it in a way to make me feel bad. My cholesterol was a little high and I didn't want to take medication to lower it, so he told me some of my options were to lose weight and walk at least 30 minutes every day.
