I'm pleased to find this thread as I have just posted a blog about whether it's worth joining teams any more!

I started with SP about 12 years ago and enjoyed being part of several teams. More recently, coming back to it after several years away, the community seems to have broken down. Many teams are inactive and people seem to use the Community Feed instead.

But if I post there, who am I talking to? Who sees it? Who responds? It's not the same feeling as being part of a small team and getting to know those members as individuals.

Perhaps I'm just a social media dinosaur, but I don't get it!

The world is fragmenting. People are more isolated than ever before. Depression is on the increase. What SP could do - and it could do it very well - is to provide a home for people where they feel comfortable and they feel they belong. What they've chosen to do instead is follow the crowd in providing yet another platform for meaningless, empty chatter.

OK, I'm getting off my soap box! Happy Sunday everyone!

And, by the way, I still love Sparks. I still think it's amazing that so much great quality and reliable content is provided, and it's free. I still look here for advice, motivation and information. Thank you to everyone at SP for what you do!

If you're looking for teams that are really active and demand a lot from you, consider joining a Biggest Loser challenge team. You can find information at:

I also wish the teams were more active. I was a member 10 years ago and they were hopping. I'm sad to find that most are almost dead or totally dead. I'd like to connect with more like-minded people beyond just having weight loss in common.

I agree. challenges are active for short terms and good motivation. Some of my Spark friends and I created a safe, fun place to call home permanently, which has done well.

If you are looking for an active, friendly, team that is all about being your healthiest self, check out our Living and Eating Mindfully team:

We are about accountability as well. We post our weekly Monday Musings on the Front Porch, where we hang out to chat and share. Please come visit the Mindful Mansion and make yourself at home.

Spark has given us so much and I am very thankful. Good luck to each of you in finding your special 'home.'

"Yep - most of the Community Goal Feed is loaded with rubbish which I suspect is more about getting SparkPoints than anything else."

I wholeheartedly agree.
I wish, as the very least, that SparkPeople would deleted all the copyrighted memes.
They clog the feed and bump down meaningful posts... and you see the same memes week to week.

I'm a leader of two teams that are moderately active. One thing we've done is to try to create interesting and unusual things to keep people interested in coming back. Challenges, games, etcetera.

But the type of team really makes a difference. Seems like state and city teams are naturally active because people are looking for buddies, resources, etc. Other teams have a natural draw by subject.

If anyone wants to, I believe one can apply to be leader of an inactive team! It's a fun challenge to get a team going and growing again.

What I've done previously is to write a Spark mail to the leaders to ask if they might add me. If they don't respond, I'll write to the coaches. Maybe in the technical thread? Does a coach want to help me out here with the specifics?

I found that the challenge teams are very active and in my experience, super supportive! Best wishes!

I also find this pretty disappointing. I've just come back to spark after 5+ years away, and really miss being able to easily find people you have things in common with. I'm not feeling the community goal feed at all... posts are much too random and not relevant to my circumstances, motivation, or interests. Would love to find people to follow, but how among the jumble of the feed?

Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.

Look at the teams first to see if active and how active before joining and read posts before joining so you don't join a inactive team.

I joined several teams just to find them inactive

Hi, Martha! I think I'll join your Healthy Hearts team. I'm also in my 60s and need to be accountable weekly for weight loss.

That's interesting. I'm one of the team leaders for the Healthy Hearts team (actually the only active team leader) and I notice that posts have really slowed down. IMO it's too bad if members are going to the community feed instead of teams. Or maybe it's just this team and I need to figure out a way to invigorate everyone!

It seems that a lot of those who were previously active on the Team Message boards, have replaced their teams for the Community Goal Feed for communication and feedback.

There are a number of teams that are still active, but there are also some that aren't. We don't have the resources to go through all of the teams and find new leaders for the inactive ones, so I'd just focus on the ones that are active.

Sorry about that!

Since I will be giving birth to my second child in less than 2 weeks I've been really excited about being able to exercise again once I'm all healed up. And I remember one of the biggest motivators for me was being able to go into my SparkTeams for accountability and help. But it seems like all the groups (even ones I'd like to join) are now all listed as inactive - some for more than 6 months.
What's going on with our Teams guys? Is there a way to update things? Either pick new leaders, delete the groups if no one is willing to step up, or what?
