Ripped another 400 calories.
On track for counting calories.

I just noticed that the weigh-in day rolls in a day early every week.
3 weeks ago it was on a Thursday, last week was Wednesday, and then today.

Every 6 days. I wonder why SPARK does that?

My Bullet Journal says my birthday is this month. I'll be 66. I never thought I'd live this long. Gotta stay in shape so I can make it to the toilet up until the day my body gives out.

It's ALL about quality of life from this point on.

...and coffee. emoticon

Snowing outside!

Still at it. Burned 400C in today's workout.

Computer says I'm on track, losing 1 to 2 pounds per week.
Still counting calories.

Patience and persistence is the order of each and every day.
Not sure why, but I skipped coffee.

Grateful for the fair weather today.
Working on my December Bullet Journal.

Well done - I was that person at work - after a party etc, the left-over crisps and sandwiches, cheesecakes and other stuff - all in the bin! They'll miss me (not!)

I work undercover in the darkness of night.
I have a bucket where the food scraps go for the composter.
Then, when no one is looking, I carry it outside for disposal.

It may sound dastardly, but I look at it as clearing out the poison.

Thanksgiving leftovers...what to do.

The mountains of cakes, pies, cookies, candy, and other dangerous foods, are destined for the garbage heap. When no one is looking, I take it outside and dispose of it. Plenty of hungry birds and raccoon will feast on that stuff. I have a place out of sight, out of mind, out of my body.

My health is more important.

The journey continues. No looking back.

More success.
Burned another 200 fun calories on the virtual trail.
I'm liking this a lot.

I put on the video, tune into my favorite tunes, and start walking.
Doing this daily as it is so low impact.

The goal is to slowly ratchet it up to 400C per day, a one hour walk. Closing my Facebook account gives me back more time to exercise. Goodby FB!

Combined with counting my nutrition calories, I'm on target to continue to my goal, achieving a 29 inch waist.

Happy Thanksgiving and Hubba-hubba!

Success.

200C burned on a virtual hike through the woods. Only took 37 minutes.

Looking at my data, my turning point was Oct 31. The trend is downwards at 6 to 8 pounds a month, a healthy fat loss rate.

Those are lovely videos to work out to!

I have been using some videos produced by the local Health Promotion service - they're not high-quality videos, but the instructions are very good. Aren't we fortunate to have all these great resources. I find it hard to just motivate myself to work out on my own - left to myself, I don't work (a) hard enough, or (b) long enough!

Ha! Just found some interesting virtual trails on YouTube. Here's a sample, complete with music.

Still counting the calories.
Avoiding sugar.

Mr. Scale and Mr. Tape are now both in agreement with each other.
Trending downward.

I loaded up my calendar with all the rest of my strength training and cardio sessions up to Dec 6. Doing so helps me reach my goals. This is my workout calendar I keep online. Also updated the Bullet Journal.

Yes I eat turkey.

Cardio completed. 4.75 miles in Zone 2.
Still trending downward. I'm feeling great. Sticking with the plan which ends on Dec 6. Then reevaluate.

I read that the best time to workout is before eating breakfast, and that is what I have been doing. Mr. Scale woke up and said, "what's going on?".

What is going on is that counting my calories is indeed working wonders. I'm sticking with it. It's teaching me portion control. It's not easy to do.

We all know that eyes are bigger than bellys.

New photo! Good for you! I hope you enjoyed your meal - don't forget the salsa! I have a similar recipe in one of my vegan books - basically a kind of Mexican Sweet Potato - corn, beans, spring onions, chilli!

I hope your downward trend is, indeed, the turn you've been waiting for.

Well done! That looks great. Carrots certainly are sweet and will take any sharpness away from the tomatoes.

My soup, which was onions, miso, chestnuts, chickpeas, turned out really well - the sweetness of the chestnuts completely took away the intense miso flavour - brilliant! The black things are roasted black chickpeas (chickpea 'croutons') and a bit of soya cream.

Here it is with a real live action photo!

It's a hit. I get an A+ for a first try.
I'm going to try different brands of diced tomato.

Here's the recipe...

www.52newfoods.com/creamy-tomato-basil-sou
p/

Using fresh whole carrots retains the vitamins and minerals not found in baby carrots. The carrots really thicken up the soup nicely. Plenty left over for dinner.

No more canned tomato soup for me SPARKies!

Let me know how your soup experiment goes - I don't like canned tomatoes (except mixed into other things in a recipe) and I don't like canned tomato soup either. I pay extra in the supermarket for the vine type tomatoes - if I can smell them, I buy them!

emoticon

I tend not to like smooth soups either - I like the chunky ones! But I made a chestnut and chickpea soup yesterday which is about 98% smooth (I stopped just before I lost all the texture), and that's looking good, the main flavouring is miso, and the chestnut make is mellow and sweet.

I couldn't help Googling, could I?!

Naaaaa...just moving along at the speed of fat loss. emoticon

Been looking high and low for a healthy tomato soup. None of the canned products look good, so I'm going do some trail blazing and make my own from scratch, starting with canned diced tomatoes. I read that they go from ripe tomato straight to the can. They taste better than the real ones they pass off as tomatoes in the store that never seem to have any flavor.

When It's heated, it's soup.
Served cold, it's juice.

Amazing how that works out, eh?

I do have a camera and I'll hook it up after the Tree Swallows return in spring.

Added my weekly weigh-in days and monthly tape days to my BuJo as motivation.
Created a new meal on my nutrition tracker. Getting better at creating custom meal plans. Reducing the frustration one day at a time.

Mr. Tape says I'm on track.
Mr. Scale keeps lying.

Up early, trouble sleeping, so I worked on my meal plans.
Fine tuning the measurements.

Accountability: One other item I failed to mention, HONESTY. Cups and food scale are worthless without honesty.

Ducks are fine.
Bees sleeping for the winter.

Working on building some Tree Swallow nesting boxes.

I discovered that the store bought designs are too small for the annual visitors. They need bigger boxes as they can raise 6 chicks. Every year, they arrive on the same day looking for nesting sites.

Another project is to install a barn owl nest box. That would be a sight to see, a box full of baby barn owls.

Cardio and strength training completed. On track.

Started building my own meal plans based on SPARK meal plans.
Discovered label information not correct on some foods, so it's a good thing I'm doing this manually so I can create balanced meals.

An example of that is a package of bean chips missing the fat, protein, and fiber counts. I guess there are a few holes in the database, so it does pay to double check the labels. I then manually added the updates to my FAVORITE foods so that I get credit for those nutrients.

Working with serving size is helping me learn how to manage portions.

The food scale, measure cups, and tape measure are my accountability buddies.
It's tedious to enter, but once done, it will be a little faster than counting calories each time I add food to my meal plans.

Gill, I was searching for more info on the meal planner. I have found that the meal planner is not all inclusive. It was setup as a guideline for folks like me who want a quick and easy way to get started with portion control. The meal planner is not meant for everyone.

However, now that I see how it works, it's teaching me a lot about serving sizes and portion control. The meal planner is easy to override and customize.

Seeing how you are a SPARKVeggiePerson, I would create groupings of your favourite veggie foods and use those as for your meal plans. As an example, let's say you favourite lunch is boiled celery soup. You would add celery and water to the group, but what would you call it? Celery soup or Lunch#23?

Added food to the group enters the fibre, protein, carbs, and fat, so when the group is added to the nutrition tracker. Well, the drudgery is almost over.

How do you add 2 servings of the celery? That's easy, you can add the serving twice, and that's how I see it work in the meal planner. The meal planner works with serving size. You probably know all this already.

In my early SPARK days, I was doing a poor job of entering foods as meals in Groupings. I see the error of my ways now. I am now building custom meals that I like and adding the right serving size and portions, along with better meal names that make more sense. Keeping good notes helps too. I'm creating custom groupings for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Snack, and keeping close watch on nutrients.

In the mean time, I will use the current meal planner until I get my feet back on the ground.

The learning never stops.

Tea?!

I love tea (and coffee). I'm glad the nutrition tracker meal plans are working for you. I'm mostly vegan, and the options are very repetitive.

Supporting my local beekeeper - I can do that. About time we had a bee emoticon, and a honey pot!

Gill, yes. Local honey is better. Local honey from a verified apiary is even more better! Support your local beekeeper.

Figured out how to get my meal plan into my bullet journal.
I just enter: "SPARK - B L D S" on one line. Just finished eating Breakfast so I X'd out the B. Simple as that. I let SPARK track the details as that is what SPARK does best.

For the next meal 'L'unch, I just fire up my phone app and select the foods it suggests. The weights, measures, and nutrition requirements are all met if I stick with the plan. I have a scale and measure cups. So much easier than whipping out the calorie counter.

Same with my exercises. It does two things to help me build the habit.

1. It reminds me to stick to these meals *only* and one 'S'nack. When X'd out, the meal is done. I move on, and no grazing the bag of pecans hiding in the cubbard.

2. Simplifies the journal entry. Fast and easy to maintain.

This is why they call it the bullet journal.

The meal planner is working out for me. So far, so good.
I went back and linked the fitness tracker back to the nutrition tracker, and guess what? I was so full from eating the planned food, I could not finish it all. I also drank a lot of water.

This morning, my weight dropped. Go figure.

But, it's not a habit yet. I will have to try it for a month or so before I really know.

Cardio and strength training completed.

Time for a cup of tea.

emoticon

Great ideas here. I haven't been successful with the spark meal plans - the customisation is tedious (for me!) - good luck with that. It does give you good ideas for portion-sizes though.

I might change my ticker to a maintenance one too - good idea. I'm not sure what Spark thinks I should weigh; I'll go and check that out (just out of curiosity!)

Have a lovely day. I'm about ready to buy another jar of local honey -there's some Cornish Black Bee honey on sale locally - and I'm assuming that locally-produced is, by definition, raw honey?

I've kept my nutritional stuff out of my BUJO - it uses up too much paper! So I have a notebook in the kitchen with my meal plans and weight records.

Exercise completed.
Making progress.
A measurable change was detected on the tape.
Updated and posted custom ticker.
Also turned on the maintenance ticker as it really is my long term goal.
SPARK thinks my goal should be 130 pounds. I think it should be 140 based on my adding muscle, so I split the difference and going for 135 pounds.

Turned on meal plans in SPARK.
I'm going to give it a go. It can be customized,

All I need to do is weigh or measure the food. No counting calories.
I'll try it out for a couple of weeks.

Still working on how to blend it in with my Bullet Journal.

Coffee!

Exercise completed for today.

My next goal is to double down on portion control.
Since I hate counting calories, my only other option is portion control.
There is an art to it and I just need to practice and turn it into a new habit.

This is where BUJO may help.
I'm working on it.
Just need to do some more reading.

Out of coffee!

Thanks Gill.

Yes, it will be interesting to find out what I can achieve. I'm only 5'-3" tall with a normal upper body and short legs. I don't think I fit anyone's chart.

With that in mind, this is why I am now using my own tickers to compare waist and weight for when (if) my journey gets me to 29" (or so), then I will know what my healthiest weight should be. It's taken me years to figure this all out and so now I know what I need to aim for. I'm glad I stumbled onto the waist to height ratio info. It may prove to be a better indicator of health than BMI.

Stay tuned as it should be interesting.

Here is some scary sugar news.

More effort to market sugar as food? I don't even want to try this stuff. It's bad enough that candy corn even exists along with all the other junk out there that undermines our efforts to stay healthy. Digest at your own risk.

Your custom ticker is great. I agree 129lb sounds very light (unless you are very short? My waist is 29" and I'm 118lbs and a 63" female. I'd love my waist to be smaller, but I'm not sure I can achieve it.

What I have been noticing, after a hard session of pumping iron, is that weight jumps upwards. I read that muscle tissue swells from damage and holding water. This is normal. This is why you cannot trust the scale and get depressed from an increase in weight. As the muscle heals, the water retention is reduced, or if you stop doing strength training, weight drops.

My waist is shrinking again. That is my goal, to shrink my waist.

New ticker.

Not happy with SPARK tickers, so I made my own.
Lets me see weight and waist measurements.

When I reset my data, it was all wiped out and SPARK asked me what my weight goal was. I didn't specify, so it selected 20 pound weight loss. That would set a goal of 129 pounds. But, SPARK doesn't account for muscle gain, so I don't believe it. My goal is about 140. We will see who is right. Time will tell.

As for my spare tire, I would like to reduce it to 29 inches. Doable. 31 inches would be my upper limit. The big experiment now begins.

Yes, a bit scary on the ticker.
I wish SPARK would fix that.

I went back and looked for more information about height to waist ratios and found a more useful chart at this site:

www.nebido.com/low-testosterone/waist-to-h
eight-ratio

Working the chart, I pulled my ideal waist measurements for my height. I should be setting my waist measurement goal between 26" to 31". Well that simplifies my tired brain and removes the need to do calculations. 29" is about the centre of my range, so I will make that my goal.

So, I updated my ticker again, setting the high and low waist size. I'm also moving the tape a bit higher up my belly for more consistent measurements. This will help me work with Mr. Tape.

Resetting the journey. Making coffee. Screwing my head back on.

Back from the cardio doc.
Doc says I'm looking good.
No changes in meds needed.

I thank myself for that.
Cutting out all the added sugar from my diet has helped tremendously.
Regular cardio and strength training doesn't hurt either.

Short cardio completed.
Strength training completed.

Building BUJO for November.

Been reading up on beta blockers, which I take for my heart, and decided my MAX target heart rate is just a little too high. So, I adjusted my zones by lowering the MAX HR.

I read that many athletes have my same problem and have adjusted accordingly. This will make my workouts a little more enjoyable and reduce stress trying to meet unrealistic goals.

I'm seeing my cardiologist tomorrow and I expect good results. It's been 12 years since my heart attack and I'm grateful everyday I wake up.

Every day it's a new me.
Every day starts a new journey.
Every day starts with fresh ground coffee.

Duck coop under attack.

I setup a wildlife camera and last night, got video of a raccoon trying to get into the duck coop. Not good!

I'm going to enhance the security, add extra fencing.
Don't want any mishaps.

Temps dropped to almost zero the other night. Hope my bees are staying warm.
I'm glad I did not rob their honey. I'm finding more information on natural beekeeping. Next spring I will add a better hive designed for the bee.

But first, more coffee.

Tested myself today out of curiosity.

Ran 1.5 miles in 0:14:33 starting at 4 mph and ending at 9 mph.

Usually, I keep to 4 mph and go uphill to prevent foot injury.
But, I think if I do an occasional speed run on level ground, I should be okay as long as my feet don't hurt.

I'll try my next test in about a week or so to see how it goes. Next test will start at 5 mph.

Coffee!

Took a couple days off from everything.
Sometimes...we just need a break from the journey.

Sometimes, the path is too steep, twisty, or narrow.

Any excuse works for me.

That's good news about the sugar. In the UK they're asking (not sure if it's law yet) food manufacturers to reduce sugar, and take-away meals have to be reduced in size too. It's good news I think. At work I support people to cook - and they sometimes give me filthy looks when I get the digital scales out and insist that they weigh out their portion sizes!

Cardio and strength training completed.

Just for fun, I'm on week 3 of the 100 push ups training program
hundredpushups.com/index.html

and I'm also in week 1 of doing the 20 pull ups challenge.
twentypullups.com/the-twenty-pull-ups-chal

There are plenty of these type challenges on the internet and there was no particular reason I chose the above two.

I just enter the daily goals in my BuJo and I get to cross them off as I complete each one. By writing them down, I make sure they get crossed off as I complete them. It's working.

So far, so good.

Coffee time.

Good News!

Mr. Tape says time for an update.
I have lost another half inch off the spare tire!
Ticker now updated.

I have entered into the 46% to 53% Healthy, Normal Weight Range.
It looks like the extra strength training is working.
Combined with a regular cardio exercise AND cutting out all the sugar has paid off. I'm very happy about this. It is a slow process, but it is working.

However, the journey does not end.

I now have to maintain this. I'm at the upper end of the range, so now my goal is to reach the middle of the range.

So, I know all this hard work is paying off.

Food controls weight.
Exercise builds strength.

Happy day!

Not from my hive.

That is natural comb, the better kind.

Mine looks like this

What I'm reading is that the above frame is for the beekeeper. Easy to harvest honey, Not natural for the bee. Causes genetic problems in the long run and is not good for drone bees.

The natural comb is designed by the bee for the bee. Produces more drones, better genetics.

I'm not in this for the honey, so I'm learning that I would prefer to go organic. I can still harvest honey, but at a slower natural rate.

Is that a picture of comb from your hives?

Strength training completed today.

Found this really nice video on bees. I think these folks are on to something.

beekindhives.uk/2018/09/19/free-bee/

The more I learn about bee keeping, the more I don't like commercial bee keeping. It's not good for the bee. I'm now doing new research on hives. I want something that is good for the bee. Not for the bee keeper. Organic bee keeping is calling me.

Doing my best to behave.

Cardio today.

Duck update: We have been adopted by a new duck. It's moulting now and looks pretty bad, but I suspect it will look better now that we are feeding it. It belongs to a neighbour who is not taking care of it. The duck spotted our ducks having fun in the pond, so now it has moved in. Why do people get pets and not take care of them?

We think it's a Black Swedish Duck.

Today's quote...

REFUSE TO FAIL.

Strength training completed.
Updating BuJo.

Playing with different pens. I love this stuff. I love quill pens too, but they are messy. The fountain pen that I found is a fine script calligraphy pen. It adds a bit of flare to the line quality. None of my ink cartridges work with it, but I found I can use a piece of erasure and drop it into the barrel to take up the gap. I can now use my other cartridges with it. AWESOME!

Making coffee as I plan my day.

Completed strength training yesterday. Upped the weights.
Completed cardio this morning.

Mr Tape says I'm still holding steady.

Weight still remains stubborn, but I'm liking what I see in the mirror.

More toned and less fat.
Muscle still growing, slowly replacing the fat.

I may go shopping today to find a mini fountain pen that can be strapped to my BOJO.

Coffee time.

UPDATE: Went to art store and found a new journal. The new one is not a standard size. It is 6 x 8 inches and is designed for artists. The dot spacing is 4 mm x 4mm and is perfect for my small writing style, plus it's not a hard cover and is more flexible. The old A5 journal has 5mm x 5mm dot spacing and is just too big for me. The other nice thing about the artist journal is that it is on acid free paper, and costs less...something I really appreciate.

I also picked up a nice disposable fountain pen that I have been meaning to try out. It may be a disposable pen, but I plan to drill a hole into it and refill it when it dries up.

I don't think I'd manage with A6 as my writing is quite 'loose'

I use the monthly list (not sure how helpful that is really as it's another thing that needs to be updated regularly.

I use my phone calendar for all events that are time-specific. Then a paper diary for messy jottings of date and time and as a kind of back-up for the phone calendar. I synchronise phone and diary regularly.

I have two ribbons in my BUJO - one used for the daily page, and one wherever I want it - usually on the monthly page or budget page.

I don't have to use my BUJO for work things. But I do have pages for all kinds of things - packing lists for my holiday, project notes, notes from lectures etc.

The main benefit of the BUJO for me has been getting the TODO list sorted out - carrying things over from one day to the next happens less frequently, and I'm more likely to work through the things on my list so that I don't have to carry them over. I like that it's a totally flexible system that you can use how you need.

I had the A6 pocket size, but I'm finding it's just too restrictive.
I moved to the A5 and I keep it at my computer desk. It's better for drawings for sure.

Sticky tab is to quickly find the Daily Log.

My current tools for journaling are:

BuJo for tracking, managing, and journaling everything within 6 months.
ColorNote for daily todo while mobile.
Google Calendar for long range annual/seasonal repeating events and tasks.

If I go shopping, I load up ColorNote with my shopping list and any tasks that need to be done while in town. If I have an idea or some task I need to remember, I make note of it and when I get home, I update BuJo.

When I update BuJo, I check the Google calendar and update my future log accordingly. BuJo is always updated up/down, back/forth as needed. It's becoming a very handy time saving system. A nice feature of Google Calendar is that I can have multiple calendars that can be toggled OFF/ON as needed. I can just view my exercise calendar and filter out the other events to make the updates less cluttered.

I carry the BuJo as needed, otherwise it stays at the desk. For local meetings and field trips, I bring BoJo to take notes, make drawings, etc.

BoJo seems to be the most efficient and compact system for journaling and time management that I have found. Writing down my thoughts and goals helps me reach my goals and journal my way to success. A good fountain pen makes it more fun.

oh, she's so cute! and so's that bandage! I'm very happy to hear she's on the mend - antibiotics and epsom salt baths

The larger BUJO sounds right for an artist - what size is it? A4? My BUJO is pretty standard A5 I guess. I don't carry mine around - it stays at home. I still haven't mastered the art of using the BUJO for everything - I use the 'notes' facility on my phone to capture ideas - written and photos - then don't transfer them to my BUJO. I should really - the phone is just virtual post-it-notes. Now that I've told you that, I'll do something about it!

Duck update:

It's been about a week with an injured foot.
I'm getting better at dressing a webbed foot wound.
Nothing more fun than trying to hold a duck and dress a duck's foot.
They don't like that one bit.
But, this one is quite tame and she knows we are helping her.

This morning, she jumped out of her hospital nesting box and refused to stay in. She kept standing next to the door, so I let her out to join the rest of the flock. She is running around and putting her full weight back on her foot, so I'm happy to see she is recovering. I figure another week of epsom salt baths and antibiotics and she will be back to 100%.

Today, I'm trying out a larger size BUJO and I'm liking it. Though less portable, it allows more writing and drawing space. More agreeable with my fountain pens as well.

Haven't run for about a week as I need a break, so I am lifting more weights and general strength training.

Coffee time!
