My son was having the same problem with baseball games (need to be at the field by 5:15, game isn't over until 8). Our solution was to give him a smoothie (fruit, yogurt, ice) or kefir, and then easy-to-digest snacks to keep on hand in his bag (pretzels, cut up apple or a banana, Gatoraide- which is normally banned in my house, but I make an exception for long-term physical activity like 90+ minute bike rides or hours of practice/games).
If he got hungry during the game, he had snacks right there. 90% of the time, he only drank the Gatoraide, then ate a big dinner at home afterward.

Can he instead eat dinner between school and practice? From lunch to 8:15pm is an awfully long time to go with just a snack...
