I just added the data base to my favorites. This is great information to have. I usually input the item into my nutrition tracker. I can usually find something similar. If not, I break down the components to the best of my ability and add that info to my tracker. Like they said, it works out in the end. Sometimes I will overestimate just to be on the ‘safe’ side.

Bakery or similar? Although this information isn't often available in store you can find online. Also my fitness pal is good for locating nutritional info.

I just don't sweat it. -- I really don't have time to chase that all down... which is one reason why the tracker drives me CRAZY.

Judy, Yes, I do but the sodium is off the wall. Trust me, I have checked everywhere and Wal-Mart is the only store that carries this particular one. I had the store manager order it for me. It is Bumble Bee (in water) Solid White Albacore and the sodium is only 35mg. vs the regular one which is usually anywhere from 160 to 360mg. the calories are 70 and fat is 1%.

Dave - thank you that site was awesome. But could not find the Tuna that I usually buy at Wal-Mart. Only 35mg of sodium. I have to monitor my sodium and this is the only place that I can find the tuna with the lowest sodium. It is the Bumble Bee (in water) chunk premium albacore.

If you don't like the estimates available here on Spark don't be afraid to call the cafeteria, on a bit of an off hour, and ask for their manager. That manager should have access for the nutritional data for everything they cook and serve.
I work in a small school district and often eat in the school cafeteria. The manager is used to me asking about nutritional information on the dishes. This is information she has to keep for Government paperwork and regulations. She is actually happy that someone gets some positive use from all of this stockpiled data.
Good luck!
Steve

You did GREAT! There were times when I couldn't get exact nutritional data that I used that as an excuse and went on to what I knew was overeating.

I think the most important thing is to count it SOMETHING, estimate the best you can, and move on!! Keep on. Keep trying. Do the best you can. That's what counts.

Usually SparkPeople has some good similar items that can help you estimate or sometimes on the rare occasion that I can't find it here, I go to DietKing.

For unplanned meals, events, dinners out, potlucks, etc.... I simply revert to the Plate Method: One half of my plate is veggies, one quarter is protein, and one quarter is carbs. I know I will be in the "ok zone" for healthy eating and don't stress over it. Calories will balance out over time...and Portions are the real secret!

There is more to this Journey than math---for which I'm very grateful!

That database is fantastic. Brand names and all. Wonder if USDA sells it for usage. It would be great to have a constantly updated database connected to our nutrition tracker. But this allows me to manually enter for those situations where I'll be working close by a new lunch source.

I liked when you said something like, "it was hospital food and they feed it to the patients and so it should be healthy".

I've rarely experienced healthy food in a hospital. It's frequently unappetizing things like lettuce with brown edges, cold drinks that should be hot, chicken with unknown sauce and out of boxes and cans that have additives. Nursing homes are even worse.

I've only been in one hospital where the food was good.

There will always be a time in your life when the unexpected happens - or even a planned event such as an nice meal out, or a family gathering. I suggest that you not worry about meeting all your goals and being really pedantic about recording everything accurately. You could do either of the two things I do. One is just make a note that it was a special event, i.e. hospital, birthday, Xmas, etc. and start again as soon as possible, or the other is to roughly guess the food you ate and get a guestimate. Most of the time I go with the former, and believe me when I say this, "it is NOT going to impact on your reaching your overall goals" so long as it is only occasional.

Kris

Thank you! Nice site, got it bookmarked now :)

The only thing I got really stuck on in the end, was the bread from the sandwich, most of the other things I could find. No clue what bread they had out, but it looked similar to cobblestone rolls, so I went with that. Half a sub and a nice garden salad, with a small side bowl of fresh cut cantaloupe and pineapple. it's only estimates on sizes/quantities now, but if I got anywhere close to right on guessing that then it was still under 500 calories for the meal. Which brought me to 1215 total for the day (spark people suggested goal is between 1200 and 1550 for me) so I'm happy now.

Also got an untracked amount of exercise in while there, going up and down the stairs and circling the hospital with my sister repeatedly, trying to get my niece to hurry up and come lol Was in such a rush to leave the house when she called, I forgot my pedometer at home. Well, I don;t mind untracked exercise anyway lol

Thanks again for the tip, and the link :)

The Spark database search usually will produce something in the ballpark and here is a site that might help:

ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/search/list?fgcd=&man
u=&lfacet=&count=&max=&sort=&qlookup=&
offset=&format=Abridged&new=&measureby
=&ds=&order=&qt=&qp=&qa=&qn=&q=&ing=

Sometimes you just have to use your best judgement, punch something in and hope for the best. It usually averages out over time as long as you don't have too many days that go that way. Hope that helps.

I have been trying hard not to eat anything unless I can get nutritional info for it, so I can enter it properly here. That means that even if I do indulge and eat out, I only eat from places that have this information available. But I have just spent the day at the hospital, it was a sudden trip, and I couldn't plan ahead and prepare and take something with me. I went for a while without, but once I realised it would be a rather lengthy wait, I did break down and eat there. I reasoned (hoped) that since it is hospital food, and they put the same food out in the cafeteria as they feed the patients, that it was reasonably healthy. I kept portions small and did go for more fresh things (salad without dressing, and a small sandwich loaded with more veggies and no mayo etc.) Their other options tonight from the hot bar were all battered or dunked in various gravies. While they may cook it more healthy (low sodium etc) it just looked too heavy for me at that point.

So I feel like I did do good eating fairly healthy anyway, but I'm stuck on how to track it here, as they had no nutritional info available for anything. Any ideas?
