Just recently my favorite swap food is cauliflower. I am using it to make ‘mac and cheese, rice, and mashed potatoes.’ It does not taste exactly the same but I find a mixture of 3 parts to 1 with the original food item makes for a delicious side dish.

I don’t miss my favorite comfort foods because the taste is there and the cauliflower makes a little (rice, macaroni or potato) go a long way. Also, the added veggie means I can eat a much larger serving with less carbs and fewer calories. Win-win.

Stay positive. "Every day is not good, but there is something good in every day." With God, all things are possible.

I allow myself cheat days where I eat what I want. I lost half my desired weight after months of never straying and was going crazy for "comfort food" Saturday morning. I congratulated myself for my progress and allowed myself a weekend to stray. I had some milk chocolate, a slice of rum cake and a scoop of home made ice cream at a friends house. I made meatballs and had corn yesterday. I didn't follow a regimen at all. I went to a movie and had a soda and buttered popcorn.

Monday morning, I was right back to calorie counting, focusing on water intake and eating clean. Allowing myself to cheat here and there keeps me from going off the deep end and binging. This week I will not lose a thing. But since I'm focused on life change, I stay on track almost 100% but live once a month or so too.

My favorite swap so far is using Zucchini or squash noodles in place of pasta noodles. Not only do I cut out a lot of carbs, but I save a bunch of $ using my spiralizer instead of buying pre-made noodles.

Also, I use lettuce in place of bread. Like BLT's are now just B&T's wrapped in L. haha. and Hamburgers are wrapped in lettuce.

I also use Splenda in place of regular sugar.

And I eat Turkey Sausage patties for breakfast in place of regular sausage.

I utilize plain low-fat greek yogurt to trim calories and add protein, whether by swapping it out for or mixing with mayo, sour cream, buttermilk, making blue cheese dressing, and more.

What a great bunch of tips and success creativity in this thread.
May the forks be with all y'alls.

I don't take the time to do zucchini strips but I like sliced zucchini with various sauces.

Hi Josie,
I like using zucchini noodles sometimes; however some people are disappointed because they think they'll taste exactly like noodles. Of course they don't. But they're still good and work well with many sauces. One complaint I have about them is they get kind of wet, especially reheated. Something you can do to get rid of some of this is to make the noodles, salt them well and let rest for about 20 minutes, then rinse the salt away and cook as normal. This draws out some of the moisture.

Does anyone have an opinion about zucchini strips as a substitute for pasta?

Swaps I've used when eating out:
(for = "in place of")
lettuce wraps (for bread)
extra veggie side (for potato/rice/pasta/legume side)
leafy greens or lettuce (for pasta/rice as main dish with meat)
bacon (for toast/biscuit/muffin)

I trade a portabello mushroom for a hamburger. I add lots of vegis, bacon and some french fried Jalapinos. It really feels like I am really cheating

Pizza is not healthy for me because of the carbs in any grain, whole or not.

I make a pizza "crust" from shredded parmesan cheese. Just plop about a half cup of cheese into a skillet with low heat. The cheese will gradually melt together and then crisp up.

The rest of pizza's ingredients are fine for my needs.

There is no such thing as the final success in life. What is really meaningful is the courage to face the next minute, hour, day.

Whole grain waffles with Plain non-fat Greek yogurt and cinnamon instead of syrup. I try to stay away from sugar and I get protein from the yogurt so I'm not hungry in an hour.

Instead of store bought Tostitos that are full of oil and fat, I make my own with fat free or low fat corn or whole wheat tortillas. Cut them in 6 pie pieces, bake in oven till crunchy and eat with salsa or hummus.

I also warm up a whole tortilla so it's bendable and wrap half a slice of over riped banana sprinkled with cinnamon when I want something sweet and chewy.

I agree with LuAnna and Martha that I will typically just eat the thing I'm craving in a small amount to avoid feeling deprived, but I do have some subs/alterations:

When I'm craving pizza, rather than takeout pizza, I make my own where I can control and properly track the ingredients. Sometimes I will also make a "pizza" on something like half of a zucchini or an English muffin for even lower calories.

I love boneless buffalo wings, but have determined it's really the sauce I like and don't necessarily need the fried chicken underneath, so I bake my own boneless breaded chicken and then toss with the sauce.

When I'm craving something chocolatey, a small cup of hot cocoa will often hit the spot without needing to indulge in a whole piece of cake or something like that.

Popchips typically hit the spot for me when I want some crunchy chips (though sometimes only kettle cooked salt and vinegar will do, and then I just eat a serving of those and fit it into my daily calories!)

Shirataki Tofu noodles, Zucchini noodles, or Edamame Pasta in place of regular pasta. It tastes just as good, is better for me, and I can have a satisfying portion size because of the healthier nutrition profile.

I'm with LuAnn - when I want something I tend to have it, just in moderation. Learned long ago that substitutes rarely satisfied me and I'd end up eating the substitute AND then going for the real thing with gusto.

My friends and family laugh that I can turn any meal into a salad. When the fam wants tacos, I choose to make a taco salad. Bbq chicken, Thai pizza, tuna salad, anything you can put on bread you can put on a salad instead. I also like to sub spaghetti squash for rice or pasta under curry, stir fry or bolognese. This helps me make one meal for the family, just with different side dishes.

For the most part, I eat what I am craving.

If I want chocolate, I have a small piece.
If I crave pizza, I have a slice.
If I hear cookies calling my name, I have one.

SparkPeople is about moderation, not deprivation. And I find I can successfully work my cravings into my calories for the day.
