My Mom and her bestie convinced me to give Freestyle WW a try. Back years ago I did it when it was smart points and consistently lost about a pound a week. I've been on WW Freestyle for 7 weeks. First week I lost 5 pounds, I've lost zero in the last 6. I've chatted online through the app with coaches and done everything they suggested. I limit my zero point foods, I am down to drinking water, one cup of coffee and cashew milk (eww) and nothing. I'm also walking a lot more with my Fitbit (I have a very large chest so to keep myself and others safe I walk instead of Zumba, lol.). Just out of curiosity I put two days worth of what I ate in SP to see what my calories were. It's no wonder I'm just maintaining. I think the points system was way better. The freestyle program just has too many things not regulated. On smart points you were told to eat x amount of veggies, x amount of dairy etc each day. Freestyle is a free for all with no such suggestions. Yeah go ahead and eat all these zero points foods you will lose weight. No. I do not eat a dozen eggs or three chicken breasts because they are zero points now, but I really think there should be better guidelines. Such as.... chicken is zero until you eat x amount then it counts as x points." I paid for 3 months on the WW app so I'm going to finish it out but I think I'm canceling it after that. I'm very sad.....I don't expect to just drop my 50 pounds in a week but dang, even just 1/2 a pound a week would make me ecstatic. Depressed....... just feel like I wasted 7 weeks of my life for nothing.

Calories do count. I started WW back in the '80s and at that time it was an exchange system. I understood it well and also understood it translated to about 1200 calories per day, and meals needed to be balanced. For me, that old plan is far better than Simply filling, Smart Points and the new Freestyle plan.

Trust me I could eat 5 plain ears of corn and 5 bananas every day in addition to lots of other "free" foods plus my allotted points. And I am positive I'd gain Weight doing that on a regular basis. I get what they are saying: make healthier choices using COMMON SENSE and you will lose weight. I have common sense in every other area of my life, but the reason I was overweight in the first place was not because of unhealthy choices, it was because I loved to overeat whether the food was healthy or not! And I think that is true for many seriously overweight people.

With that in mind, I don't see WW being the best option anymore, when they tell you 200 foods are unlimited zero points. Unless your common sense "limits" you to just a few of those (only 1 ear of corn, 1 banana, 1 chicken breast, and so on) then I just don't see it working for many of us.

I could personally still stay on track with any of WW plans because I would never lie to myself about those "zero point" foods. (It bugs me though that it seems that WW is essentially lying to members, telling us those don't add up and cause weight gain). I'd track them somehow or keep track of my total calories for the day in addition to using WW's tracking system, to make sure I don't go over what I need each day.

I am at my goal and have stayed close to that for many years, I was asked if I wanted to start a WW meeting and be the leader in my area. I could not do it unless I told members to also have another method to "track" to make sure their calorie count is reasonable every day, and I know WW would frown heavily on that.

I didn't have much success with Freestyle. Too many higher calorie foods are 0 points now which makes it harder to figure out what to eat. You can't rely on point count alone anymore with WW.

I dropped from meetings to online only. Couldn’t find a meeting that inspired me and couldn’t see spending the full cost if I wasn’t motivated enough to use it. I really need a strong support group and wish I could just find one. I wish they did online meetings- that would be something I would try. The scale has slowly crept back up to where I started without the support of a meeting. I’m feeling so frustrated.

I did not want to pay that either, so I switched to online. Half the price and I still track my food and activity.

I lost ten pounds on Weight Watchers last year, maintained, then wanted to lose another ten. The FreeStyle system does NOT work for me. I was diligent for three weeks and, nothing. When I asked the coach how come I wasn't losing anything when I'm eating nothing but fruits, vegetables, eggs and some grilled chicken, she replied, "Remember, the zero foods still have calories!" So, my breakfast of eggs, mid-morning banana, and snacks of oranges, cherries and grapes wasn't zero - it was like 500 calories! More than a third of my diet limit. And I hadn't had a real meal! When I went back and figured the actual calories of everything I had eaten, I wasn't surprised I had lost nothing.

My 2 cents worth... My first venture into Weight Watchers (WW)was in the late 1970s! I signed up after consuming an entire box of Girl Scout chocolate mint cookies between the front door and the kitchen! Back then, the WW program was much more restricted than it is now with the Freestyle version. I've been on the lose-gain-lose-gain cycle and I wanted to stop. SparkPeople has been good for me and I've lost weight (25+ lbs.) and become more active since joining in 2014. I love the program and the community! However, having gone through each and every one of the SparkCoach programs multiple times, I thought I'd give WW a try again... just to have some new "scenery"! I love the Freestyle program!!! I am fortunate to enjoy fruits and vegetables. I'd rather have some steamed broccoli than a bowl of ice cream! (I know... it's weird!) Plus, I'm not much of a snacker, which has also been a help! (Don't eat cookies like I used to, but I do have one occasionally!) Chicken, fish, shellfish, eggs, tofu, and beans are all very versatile foods, with seemingly endless possibilities when meal planning. I incorporate lean grass-fed beef, too. Adapting to the new program has not been difficult. I was already accustomed to the point system. Most days, I don't make anything fancy, just easy-to-fix basics. Same as with SparkPeople, weighing/measuring is very important, as is tracking. As Coach Becky points out, "portion distortion" can thwart any plan! I just keep it simple. Today, I weighed in at the meeting, and I'm just 5 lbs. from my goal weight. For me, our wonderfully motivating WW leader and the camaraderie of the group, plus the new Freestyle program have made all the difference! P.S. Trying to do WW online wasn't the same, as the meetings really are inspirational! When I reach my goal weight, I'll be able to attend WW meetings for free as long as I'm not more than 2 lbs. over goal weight. P.P.S.I still sign into SparkPeople most days! So, I get the best of both worlds!

The peace of the world begins at home.

Same here, lost weight with SP and counting calories, but decided to give WW another try. It stressed me out so bad. Too many 'free' foods and 'bad' foods. I can eat as much chicken as I want, but use up a lot of my points if I decide to have lean beef?
Oh, and it was costing me 19.99 a month online/app for less than what SP offers me!

I did Freestyle faithfully since January and lost a whopping 9 pounds by the end of May. The previous 5 months on SP, I lost 21 pounds. I made the decision last week to go back to SP and lost 3.4 pounds. I am happier, feel like I am eating more food and it is food that I enjoy eating - not necessarily chicken, fish, or turkey. I think it is easier to eat out on SP.

I'm also diabetic and have found the same problem with the WW freestyle program. The answer that I was given at the meeting was to eat more vegetables as snacks. There's only so many celery sticks and salads a person can eat before you give up on the plan. Today was weight-in day and I have been very faithful to never go over my points. I have always been under and never used any of the extra points that you can use during the week and still gained. As a diabetic are you having the same problem as me with regards to not losing?

I just joined WW...again. While I do understand the Freestyle program, I am really struggling to edit the program for my personal situation. I am diabetic, I CANNOT eat unlimited amounts of fruit, corn, beans, squash and such, my sugars will be way to high. I guess since I am on cholesterol medicine I can handle eating unlimited eggs. I do love my eggs. I guess I could just do the program and see what it does to my sugar level. Does anyone else have this problem?

I pay for WW at work but am not following their plan. I've tried several times to get on board with Smart Points and now Freestyle. Even with more zero point foods, I still feel too much like I am on a diet and not a lifestyle. They penalize so many foods on their plan now. I liked Points Plus much better. Lost weight consistently and was still able to fit in treats.

I do like going to the meetings. We have a good leader and like getting new ideas and recipes but I've been bouncing around the same three pounds for MONTHS. So I changed up my goal here on Sparkpeople for a 1 lb loss per week. Last week, I was not perfect but was still down 0.8 lbs. Still not perfect tracking but I AM being more consistent. Best part is I can make better choices and still fit in treats without them costing half my daily points!

I figure everyone has their journey, this just happens to be mine. :)

Been a week on the program - only down 1 1/2 lbs. but it's a start. Long way to go, but this program seems to be something that could be used for the long term. Not like the lose it fast diets out there.

I'm about the same, and I got 23 and a bunch of "free" extra 40 a week. Insane. Have been totally frustrated and I was on the Smart Pint program for two years. gained weight on the new system because it kept saying "You've got rollover points from yesterday" I felt like it was the "if you eat this at midnight it doesn't count" diet. Was on a rollercoaster of +3 pounds -3 pounds for four weeks. Quit then started over, thinking it was me...no it isn't.
Best of luck. BTW none of the other foods are counted the same so it's like you know nothing about what was successful. Sorry for the rant, frustrated. I am going to do this.

I have lost 15 pounds in about two months on Freestyle. I was just ready to lose the weight, and I had the motivation of a sunny vacation at the end of March. I wanted to fit into my summer clothes. Perhaps any approach would have worked. I just happened to pick this one. I have not used points for "junk" food, and I have not used all my points. I have been satisfied on the program. I just wanted to mention that it could work for some.

hi - I tried smart points and freestyle - neither worked for me.

I found that with freestyle, because they had so many free items - chicken, corn etc, I ate more of them and used my points for junk. I gained weight.

I lost over 70 pounds on points plus.

there are aps to track your weightwatchers without joining weightwatchers - I track points is the one I use, but there are others.

hope this helps

I'm 60 yrs. female 169 lbs 67 inches... what would my smart points allowance be on new freestyle plan? I was once a golden key goal member (1989 lifetime member out of Rochester, NY) I don't plan on WW$$ anymore, but since I shop mostly from zero points list anyway and only purchase 7 items on a regular basis with points
* oats, oil, nuts, ramen, velveeta light, light margarine, sugar free pancake syrup *
I wondered what my allowance would be these days. (?) I couldn't find a free calculator for ww 2018 points daily allowance (I only found the free points app calculator for food)

if you have a way to find that number would you sparkmail me please? I'd love to test following ww points for a week.

@BETELGIRL - Quorn products are not zero points, since they have a little bit of sugar and a little bit of saturated fat. The points range anywhere from 2- 11 - 11 is for a burrito.

I did visit. Wow! Nothing has changed. Except maybe the plan.

Same old weight watchers. Apologizing profusely that their ap is down. Apologizing profusely that they are double billing. Or still billing people who have canceled. (If you ever cancel watch your statements. They have a bad habit of continuing to bill people. Trust me I know)

Spark People is 1000 million times infinity better than Weight Watchers. Plus Spark people is free.

Same stuff different day. I'm going to pass.

I was wondering myself. I had been on Points Plus. I quit when they switched over to smart points.

I was wondering about Freestyle. Think I will pass. Plain chicken and turkey breast tastes like tears and desperation.

I think I will head over to the weight watchers Facebook page. To view the chain reaction car wreck. That is failing weight watchers.

I have played around with the WW calculator, and they "penalize" foods with saturated fat and sugar (especially if they don't have protein). It makes sense.. but my 15 calorie vitamin gummies are one point, and some peeps I had gotten after the holidays are 7 points for a serving (120 calories). I mean, I would never argue that they are nutritious, haha, but I could see how people with certain eating patterns would either lose weight rapidly OR struggle with losing weight on this plan.

Great post, Kelly. We are all on the journey of health and weight loss, but we need/take different paths.

I have just finished my second week on the new program, and I have lost 5.1 pounds overall. I can totally see how if you allowed yourself unlimited access to free point foods, and then used all of your points for unhealthy choices, it would be easy to not lose weight. I am very conscious of that as I plan my days.

Hello!

I am a frequent WW member and just rejoined with two college friends.

On the Freestyle program, the following foods (among others) are ZERO points: Skinless chicken and turkey breast, fish, shellfish, eggs, beans, tofu, lentils, fruit, veg (including corn and peas), salsa and nonfat plain yogurt.

Compared to the 2017 plan, the daily allotment of points has decreased by 7 points on average. I'm 5'5" and 155. My daily points target decreased from 30 to 23.

I am someone who eats a lot of Core/Simply Filling foods on a regular basis, so for me, Freestyle seems a little bit too good to be true. Essentially, if I restrict myself to the Core Foods that are also SF, I essentially get 23 points to use per day on junk food if I wish. I can't see how, for me, the Freestyle Program would be more effective than Simply Filling. That said, for me, the Freestyle Program feels very generous and easy to follow.

For my friend who is prone to sugar binges, fast food, unhealthy foods, eating out a lot, the Freestyle program is working very well now that he is directed to more healthy foods.

For my other friend who lost 25 pounds on the 2017 plan, she prefers the original points system and has not had success with Freestyle, as it just allows too much food for her. She prefers portion control.

Search "Weight Watchers CEO on company's shift towards health – not just weight loss." I suspect that the Freestyle program is easier to follow than previous plans, but slower. Hope this helps!

I think you might need to be part of the program to get the actual list, but I found this site informative: www.emilybites.com/2017/12/new-weight-watc
hers-freestyle-program.html

Hello: Is there an online list of foods that have points for the Freestyle plan? If not, what are the higher point foods? Thank you.

I signed up for the Free Style program about a week and a half ago. I have used WW before, but a long time ago. I was a little concerned that with so many zero point foods I might take in too many calories, but so far I am doing well. I lost 3.4 pounds in the first week. I am having no trouble staying under points. I tend to eat pretty well, and I enjoy many of the zero point foods.

It basically just allows for way more zero point foods-plain chicken, Greek yogurt, etc

What is Freestyle. I have not been on WW for a while. I am considering rejoining, so any info about the new program is appreciated.

There are more foods with zero points which helps. It is something to get used to.

My friends that are WW love it and have already lost some weight.

It's not for me though. I like seeing the nutrient t breakdown. I am trying to keep daily carbs under 100 gr though.

Does anyone do the freestyle program? How do you feel it’s effectiveness compares to the original or Points Plus system?
