If you are concerned about phytic acid, the way to reduce it in legumes (lentils, beans, etc.) is to soak the legume in water overnight, and then discard the soaking water and rinse the legumes before cooking.

To the person who commented about Indians, Pakistani and others whose (typically vegetarian) diets traditionally include a lot of legumes, soaking legumes before cooking is a very common traditional practice, so it doesn't follow that a diet high in legumes would correlate with phytic acid's role in dental health. See the cookbook Nourishing Traditions (but take her commentary with a grain of salt - she's a little off-kilter).

Personally, my tooth decay issues are linked more strongly to my dental regimen (brushing and flossing regularly, drinking water with meals, rinsing my mouth out and chewing sugar-free gum after meals if I can't brush, etc.) than it is to my diet. I eat lots of legumes and some grains, and I don't tend to soak many of them except when making soup.

Take life one day at a time - enjoy today before you worry about tomorrow.

Do you brush your teeth after every meal and floss once a day?

I've never heard of lentils causing tooth decay. I thought tooth decay was from bacteria living in your mouth. Enamel erosion is quite another story altogether. You can use tooth paste that helps to strengthen your enamel.

If you feel lentils are definitely causing your problem, maybe you could just stop eating them. But also research everything else that can hurt your enamel and quit having those things too, such as popcorn and soda and sticky candy.

Some people need to have their teeth cleaned more often than others. You might need to increase your visits to the dentist, so that your teeth are very clean. So instead of once a year, go twice. If it's already twice, go four times a year. Your insurance likely won't pay for the extra cleanings, but you will benefit by staying cavity-free longer. As you age, your teeth can become more porous. That makes it vulnerable to erosion and cavities.

I think your first line of defense, though, will to always brush right after eating. And floss before bed. But if you are able, try to floss after lunch as well. People who floss more than once a day have less cavities than people who only floss once. It can be hard at first, but as your gums get used to it and it becomes a habit, it's easier.

I've been getting cavities too which I thought was from my spinach smoothie-- some sweetness but not much. I'm flossing and rinsing my mouth out more.

Okay, Cedric, you got me. I had to look it up. Funny thing is, my wife is much younger than I and she did know what it was. Said they gave it to them in school and it tasted horrible! That's probably why she's a tooth health freak.

I would have thought if that were the case that a lot of Indians, Pakistani and others who eat a lot of lentils would have bad teeth, but on the whole they look beautiful.

Eh, I'd take a Red Cote every night before brushing before I'd worry about grains!

I guess I don’t eat enough lentils as I’ve never had this happen.

I started eating lentils a while back and loved them, but I found that I was getting a lot of cavities. I read that the phytic acid in them is very bad for your teeth. Rinsing them some is supposed to help, but I always rinsed them first. Wondering if there's a sparkpeople article (or one could be written) on it to share with other sparkers.
