I agree with Michelle to a degree. I avoid drugs as much as possible and would honestly try to change my nutrition to get off the drugs.

Are there other deititians in you area? I would definitely raise your concerns again with your doctor. His flippant response to eat the same thing daily was rude and not helpful. Personally, I would get back in contact with that doctor and ask for a referral to a dietitian. If that doesn't work, call your insurance company to see if there are dietitians you can work with in person or telephonically.

I hear you!
My husband would not be able to be consistent, which is why the Xarelto is perfect for him.
This way, if I buy fresh spinach, he can have some in his breakfast omelet, in his lunch salad, and as part of out evening meal... then not have it for several days.

Thanks Meghan. I did talk to my doc and his only advice was to eat the same meals daily. He actually does that!! I am not that regimented.. The local dietician retired a few years ago and hasn't been replaced at our hospital in my small town. This is a common drug and I knew someone on spark has been where I am.

Have you actually discussed your concerns with your doctor and perhaps a Registered Dietitian? That might be better than getting information regarding a medical situation from Internet strangers.

The iceberg lettuce is really low in k. I just saw some info to check my multi Vit that I take every day. Mine has 30 mcg of k and I've read women should stay below 90 for the day. Men can go higher the article said. I'll look for vitamins lower in k and stick as close as I can to non green veggies. My doc said consistency is the key to this but Lordy I don't eat the same way every day. This post has been so helpful. Especially knowing how many other people deal with this daily. My goal is to be able to move back to my home test kit. I started back on warfarin in Feb so until I'm stable I'm still testing at docs weekly. Home testing is so much easier. Thanks everyone for your help and information.

Hi Fran,

I'm dealing with that for my husband. He just started on Warfarin in December for afib. The whole Vitamin K thing can be difficult. In hubby's case, he only likes iceberg lettuce, which is much much lower in Vit K than the darker greens so that has really helped with his salads--iceburg only. I don't know how you feel about that; but, it has enabled him to still have a salad most days. And then try to add non-green veggies to it for additional nutrition value that you don't get with iceberg.

Good luck!

I still eat salads and greens - but my doctor said not to eat a salad every day being o the blood thinner. I guess everyone is different. There is so many reports on everything it is hard to know what to do - but at this point in my health I have to listen to my doctor! But even doctor opinions vary!!!

from the xarelto website:

"XARELTO® doesn't interact with vitamin K like warfarin does. This means you can enjoy leafy green vegetables and other foods high in vitamin K whenever you like—without it interfering with your medication."

My husband is on Xarelto, and he chose it because you do NOT have to worry about vitamin K levels.

It is hard because salads were/are a staple for me also. Just have to be careful on how much and how often - just like you said. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. The other class of meds were too expensive with my Medicare. I didn't realize you had to manage Vit k on other blood thinners. I just have to stop being scattered, track my foods and work at becoming consistent.

I am on Xarelto for pulmonary embolism and yes you have to watch Vitamin k with any blood thinner. As well as turmeric! Little stuff I never knew.

Yep - vitamin K levels have to be consistent when you are on Warfarin.
It is a major reason several people I know are on other medications... they did not want to deal with that.

I've searched for this topic and since I couldn't find it I am asking for help. I take Warfarin for afib and have to limit Vit k to 90mcg a day. When I am losing weight it is due to increased salads and green vegetables. It's making me crazy trying to be consistent daily with veggies. I read the lists of K veggies and get crazier. Is anyone else around here dealing with this issue while trying to lose weight? Thanks for any input.
