I'm just coming off of keto, after both my daughter and myself ended up with pancreatitis due largely, although not exclusively to keto. I went back on keto because my blood sugar numbers were bad after the death of my grandson, comfort eating. I'm back to my normal low carb, it's good for my blood sugar and more doable for me. I strive for 100 g of each protein, carb and fat. It's easy to track and allows me to have most of the foods that I crave.

Nobody can have it all, you can only have what you love most.

I don't understand why anyone thinks keto is a good idea, but to each their own. Having heart disease in my family, no way am I going to eat 75% fat. Good fat IS good for you, but too much of anything is bad imo. I am LOVING the mediterranean diet and it doesn't cut out any major food groups which I love, because I also believe carbs are very important for your brain and body. I do eat more beef than fish though but am still doing really well with the principles of the mediterranean diet. I am VERY anemic so, even though I don't love beef, it does make me feel better when I eat it. I don't eat it that often, but more than standard mediterranean for sure.

A few thoughts.
Any dramatic diet change to whole food, keto/paleo types or vegan/plant based, when processed food is removed usually has a dramatic beginning.
For the same reason. No junk.

So your coworker likely is seeing the fluid retention drop from less sodium.
And yay for them.

I was put on medically-supervised ketogenic diet as a child, for seizures.
It helped. A lot. But I was forced to eat these rich foods at every meal, and I could not have fruit, ever. Literally, the only time I had sugar was on family birthdays. And my mom, dad and brother have birthdays within eight days of each other, so that was one big celebration. So twice a year.
Somehow, I had water retention through this. Once I rebelled and went vegetarian, lower fat, it went away.
I’m told I’m the stingiest butter-er ever. Lol

Research I’ve read suggests ketogenic is okay in small timeframes. Think reset.

Sounds good. Carbs aren't the enemy for most of us.

That sounds like a good plan

Thanks everyone. I was just curious what others may have tried. After careful consideration I have decided that I will not attempt a Keto like plan. But instead will stick with what I am doing.Which is smaller portions, lower carbs, or maybe I should say different carb choices and healthy snacks.

I never said the plan I tried with a goal of 38% was keto. I just said it was high fat and it didn't work for me. So, personally, I know a keto style diet, with 75% or more fat, would be worse for me personally.

38% is way too low for a ketogenic diet. You should aim for above 75% fat and your carbohydrate intake should be less than 5% of your total calories or under 50 g.

I eat a lower carb diet (than the standard recommended) and it works really well for me. It’s not ketogenic though. If I had diabetes I would definitely consider trying it.

I've never tried it and don't plan on doing so. Cutting carbs out for me is not good - I NEED them (physically as opposed to addiction) and eating a high fat diet causes me a lot of painful digestive issues and increases my reflux issues. Instead I tend to eat middle of the road.

Personally, a high fat diet doesn't work for me. I tried a plan this year that aimed for 38% fat. After a few weeks, I felt so beyond gross. I compared it to spending 2 or 3 days at a fair eating every possible fried food available.

I do better with a more balanced approach. Others, including many people on SparkPeople do well with a higher fat plan like the one I tried or even higher fat that's closer to keto.

Also, please note that healthy weight loss averages 1-2 pounds across time. The fact that your co-worker dropped 12 pounds so fast may be an anomaly.

So My question is about the Keto diet. I am curious if anyone has tried or is using that plan. My co-worker today told me she lost 12 pounds in two weeks. I know that everyone is different and there is no one size fits all.
