Hi everyone, thanks for having me on the team. I am borderline hypo, have been since I turned 50. I have been able to lose weight here on SP with my biggest loser challenge teams and am so excited! It comes off slowly, but it does come off. I have lost 14 pounds since June. I started the BL and BLC in late August and that it when I began to see it come off. My diet is 1150-1400 calories a day and I track all the nutrients and eat 6-7 fruits and veggies per day. I have never taken such good care of my diet. Also I use FitBit and do 10k steps a day. Before this, I was using WW Online but gaining weight. I think the SP BLC teams are amazing, supportive, and encouraging as well as full of tips. Also I do take medication for this. Good luck to all of you and keep the faith. emoticon

ps If you wonder why I have Danny Pink in my profile pic, don't be too weirded out by it. It's a team thing. Ask if you're curious.

Hello and happy Sunday all! My name is Terrie, I'm not really new to SparkPeople, but I've been gone for quite awhile. I hope I can make it work this time because starting over, and over, and over again is getting exhausting! For health and happiness reasons I need to make some serious changes in my life.

I've spent the weekend setting up my account and page, cleaning out my fridge and pantry, as well as planning my meals and workouts for this week. I'm looking forward to my workouts tomorrow and I'm definitely feeling prepared and ready to get started! Today I'm cleaning and prepping my workout room, as well, I really want to start a journal with some very clear and decisive goals.

I'm looking forward to the help and support of this team!

I suffer from dry hair too. I also use the Argan oil. I guess I didn't know it was related to my thyroid medicine.

Have you asked your doctor about Armour Thyroid? It is desiccated hormone. You can google it to get more info. I have been taking levothyroxine for over 30 years. The only problem I have is weight gain. I use Argan oil on my hair after shampoo and just before I blow dry my hair. I find it to leave my hair soft and shiny., otherwise it will be very dry.

I joined just yesterday. I have been taking Levothyroxine for just 3 years I take 50 mg. I have struggled with my weight for a long time. I use to be about 30 pounds heavier than I am today. I lost it a few years ago and have just settled with my weight. I guess I was happy as long as my clothes were still fitting. I will be 50 in 3 years and have decided it is time to get it under control. I would love to be under 200 by then. I am hoping that I will faithfully get on here and get encouragement from everyone on here.

Hello everyone, I joined SP three weeks ago. I lost 5 lbs the first week, but having a really hard time. I am taking 125 mg Levothyroxine for 30 yrs. I lived in Cyprus for 25 yrs and never had a real weight problem. The past 7 yrs have been really hard for me since returning to the USA, gaining 50 lbs after a knee replacement in 2008. Lately, when I loose some weight, I gain half of it back. I keep up with my cardio exercises almost everyday and started with strength training three months now,. After loosing the 5 lbs, I gained back 2. At my doctor's advice, I am on a 1400 calories a day. Perhaps I should reduce to 1200. Any advice ?

Hello, hope everyone is doing well. I too am hypothyroid and feeling the effects even with being on synthroid for about some years now, I've forgotten but about eight yrs I think.

The thing that bothers me the most about it is how extremely hard it is to take off weight AND how my hair is getting so bad even the past three years...so dry, so brittle, frizzy and thinner than ever. I used to have the thickest curly hair and now it's thin and I hate it.

My dr checks my blood with a test every year and dosage has been increased almost each time.

I wanted to begin making GREEN smoothies but have now read on sp to stay away from raw greens so I'm disappointed to hear that.

I feel i wish I had never had the blood test to find out I was ht to begin with as I don't feel much better than before I knew anyway plus the fact of my hair getting worse and the weight still doesn't want to come off..even when I am strict about trying to lose.

I'm hoping to learn more about what best to eat and to see if others have similar issues with this and what they are doing to help with it...thanks emoticon

I was checking out the alkaline diet. I saw my endocrinologist today. He said the alkaline diet had nothing to do with hypothyroid. It also doesn't work for because as a diabetic my glucose was almost consistently going too low. :( We will check again in 2-3 months and see if my readings go back to normal.

Hi Jothva! My name is Ruth. The most important thing I did for myself after I found out I had Hypothyroid was go to a specialist, an endocronologist, who did 19 test panels (fasting blood work). He wanted to make sure I did NOT have Hashimoto's. My medication really helped my TH3 (?) balance out, so my levels are good. The medication did help stop my cravings for sugar, and I feel a bit less drained of energy. But I did not lose any weight. I was getting the blues, too! But when he did the test panels, and we went over the results, I found out that I don't have Hashimoto's, which is good. I then found out I have a severe Vitamin D deficiency, which can lead to weight gain, depression, and many other things as well. So he prescribed 6,000 IUs of Vitamin D daily for eight weeks, then 2,000 IUs to maintain. So far its only been under a week since I started taking it, so I can't vouch for anything yet! He also found that, and, warning, this is GROSS, I have a parasite!!!! I don't know what kind or how I got it. A very knowledgeable older lady at the health food market said it probably comes from fruits and veggies not properly washed. She told me to fill the sink with cold water, and put a few drops of oregano oil or grapefruit seed oil into the sink, and let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse off. So I am now taking a parasite cleanse, as well, called Paragone, for 35 days. It has actually made a WORLD of difference in my stomach. I am sorry to be so personal, I guess, but really, what if you are experiencing many of the symptoms I was? I was having a BM about 6 to eight times a DAY. If this sounds familiar, I would def. check out a specialist. It has only been under a week on the Paragone, and my system has been back to normal for a few days. Once again, It's a bit embarassing, but if it helps you....The same knowledgeable woman also gave me some really good advice about Hypothyroid... She said that I had to 'alkalize' my body; that if I had Hypo, I def. had to alkalize my body.... I looked up what it could entail online.... She was right on the nail. What I googled was "What does it mean to alkalize your body?" and just kinda fished around. Hope this helps, and sorry it was so long!!

Hi. I am new here. I just had a blood test yesterday and received a message from my doctor that I have hypothyroid. He sent in a prescription for Levothytoxine. I have high hopes that this will drastically help my constant fatigue and sore muscles/joints and weight loss.

Hi! Yes I know what you mean! I had the same issues with emotions! I feel more focused as well....another effect of the meds for me is that I have absolutely NO cravings for sugar anymore, or greasy fast food. It just stopped about two or three days after having initially starting the pills. I am not losing weight, however! What is your daily diet like? Mine might need a bit of tweaking, even though I don't have unhealthy cravings, lol :)
Thanks!
Good luck to you too :)

Hi there,
I'm on the same dose of synthroid you are - 0.025mcg or whatever the heck it is. LOL Oh I tell you, it feels like night and day since I started taking it a few months ago. Once in a while I have a wave of fatigue and I'll get the itchy eyes, but I feel so much better overall. The big thing for me is my emotions. You know, I used to cry at the drop of a hat. VERY emotional. The the point of being ridiculous, imo, but since I started on my meds I feel so much better and focused. And to top it off, I'm losing weight. I have a lot to lose and for the longest time it just would NOT...and I mean NOT AT ALL...come off no matter what. Now I'm losing at a steady pace and feeling good. I fully believe I'll be down to my goal weight before I know it. That darned thyroid can sure mess up a LOT of things in our bodies. I'm so incredibly grateful for my diagnosis.

Good luck and stay well!

Hello again team :) I am thinking of asking my accupuncturist if he can help hypothyroid issues. He helps with my migraines, every so often, makes a huge almost unbelievable difference with my son's ADHD (I don't even have to take him anymore :) and helped my body rid itself of the CO2. I think it's worth a shot.

Also something I am trying is to stop using milk. I replace it with unsweetened almond milk. I still use some cheese and of course fat free plain Greek yogurt.

And how many of you guys use DVDs at home? I don't like the gym, both for expense and because I live about 50 miles away from the city :) LOL. Just two months ago, I was consistent with my exercise, and I used Turbo Jam and Turbo Fire DVDs faithfully every week for three weeks, 4 to 5 times a week, plus a few mile long to two mile long walks thrown in about 3x a week, and I started toning up quickly. I shed three inches (my diet was also well balanced). These DVDs are my FAVORITE. The instructor, Chalene Johnson, is really down to earth, funny, and sweet. I HIGHLY recommend these DVDs over any other I have tried, and I've tried a lot of em!

I would start off with the first series; Turbo Jam 5 Rockin Workouts. The set includes Learn & Burn (30 minutes), the 20 Minute Workout (I love this one for when you feel low energy or have just a little time, because it's fast and efficient. For a low energy day, it's perfect, because it doesn't last forever, and gives you energy rather than sucks it out of you), Turbo Sculpt (love! 35 minutes with free weights, lunges, etc, love!), Cardio Party (I use this one once or twice a week because it takes more effort and energy, it's 45 minutes of cardio, although it's moderate intensity, and there are modifications in each and every video), and last Ab Jam (20 minutes; 10 standing ab work, which is FUN and 10 minutes floor abs, which really gets the job done! I LOVE this one too!
This is a good starter series. Worth it!! She is fun and motivating.
Then there is one of her latest series, Turbo Fire. This one kicks your butt!!!! It comes with one motivational DVD, a cookbook (recipes are pretty good!) and 10 DVDs. At the end of most DVDs there is an EXCELLENT 10 minute stretching routine, that's so good, targets so many muscles, and is so relaxing its like yoga or meditation for me. There are also modifications for each of these workouts, and each workout has a training option, so when you play it, she goes a tad slower and walks you through all the moves, so you can catch on. (without making it last any longer than the allotted time)
This is my best tip for losing weight; gettin yourselves some Turbo Jam and Turbo Fire :)

Also, instead of garlic bread for my spaghetti, which is otherwise super healthy (home made, not jarred sauce). I sprinkle on a tablespoon or 2 of cheese garlic croutons, whatever the serving size says. Its still just as tasty. I'm sure we all have our simple swaps....what are some of yours?

Other DVDs I like are the Yoga Booty Ballet DVDs (the dance ones but also Goddess Booty and Yoga Core; these come together in the Yoga Booty Ballet Master Series).

Good luck guys!!!

Hi everyone! I am 40 years old, and almost exactly one year ago, I had my uterus removed (laposcopic surgery). They left the ovaries, and there were, shall we say "complications" during surgery, so I ended up having three surgeries in three nights. Needless to say, I was pumped full of CO2, NO fun to recover from, esp when it had to be done 3x in a row! A little before surgery, about a year, I had started slowly gaining weight, but I figured it was due to getting into my 40's and not exercising as regularly as I was used to for the past 12 years. I was a size seven, healthy, fit woman, not perfect, but so content! It was harder than I expected to recover from surgery, because I am used to being very healthy. Actually, the surgery site itself was fine, only sore for a few days, but the CO2 was a nightmare, and I had a catheter, etc..... I finally went to an accupuncturist to feel better. I had been going to him (for my son's ADHD) for years, and he really made an amazing difference with my son. After I went to him, I felt so much better. However, once my recovery was really on the way, I just kept gaining weight. I'm 5'2" and 173 pounds! This February, my doctor diagnosed me with hypothyroidism. I am on Levothyroxine 25mcg, and this dosage has not changed
It is really nice to meet all of you, and it is great knowing that there are others to share the struggle with! We are not alone.
Thank you for taking time to read my story!!!

Hi. I was diagnosed about a year ago. I had never thought that my thyroid could be a problem, but I have had a problem of losing and maintaining for several years. I have worked hard to not let myself gain too much by watching the scales. It is so hard to get off again. I am hoping to get a lot of good support and ideas from this team.

Hi
I just got diagnosed today with hypothyroidism and high cholesterol. I've been struggling with my weight for a while now so maybe this is the cause. It's great to have a group of people who can tell me about their experiences & give me advice.

Prairie I just had a round of blood test done but since he told me to go off the Armour Thyroid they were not going to draw for thyroid I meet with him next Wednesday to go over results and find out what the next step is. The heart palps I thought were gone until yesterday all day long about every 5 to 10 minutes I was having palps but not a thing today. So I am really confused about what is happening with my body but I am willing to try almost anything. After being diagnosed I read about armour thyroid and how great it was but it was after I started it that I started with increase palps I already have a condition that causes palpatations so that is what I thought it was but they kept getting worse.

CINDISUEK - What does your Dr. say, about all this ?
Dr. Mehmet Oz, from the Dr. Oz Show, recommends taking Magnesium supplements,
to get that " get-up-and-go " spark of energy. It is hard to get enough magnesium in
our diets, through regular eating.

New to the team and second time around for sparkpeople. I have been diagnosed now for almost a year. I have been on armour thyroid until about a week ago. I started having bad heart palps that only got worse also have tacychardia which also makes your heart beat irregular. Has anyone else had this problem with armour? I just want to find something that works I want to feel good again. Looking forward to talking with everyone maybe get some good tips and support no one in my family can understand why it is you just can't get up and move! Very frustrating.

Hello! I was finally diagnosed with hypothyroidism last February. Apparently that was only half the battle. I had all of the classic symptoms (depression, constipation, hair loss, fatigue, dry skin, coarse hair, etc.) but was continually put on antidepressants. At one point I was on three at one time! My TSH levels were only at 4.09 so I was considered normal. Being a nursing student, I finally printed out the latest article from the American Academy of Endocrinologists that suggested laboratories change the TSH normal ranges. My doctor finally agreed and put me on 25 mcg of Synthroid. I instantly felt relief, but it was short-lived. I ended up changing doctors and my 6 week TSH came back at 3.75. The new doc did not agree that I had hypothyroid but I refused to stop treatment until he could convince me otherwise. I soon convinced him that I may very well be hypothyroid. I recently underwent a sleep study to find out why I wake up every hour. I am still awaiting the results. I cannot wait to put this ordeal behind me and have a stable TSH level. I became hypothyroid during pregnancy and fear that my youngest may have inherited it from me since their refusal to treat me. Your posts give me hope and I look forward to brighter days!

In response to THEMANSLAYER...
From what I have experienced, my high cholesterol was due to hypothroidism and now that my t4 and free t3 are better under control, mine has dropped and everything is in the normal range now. They definitely are linked. Everyone is different so make sure they do tests for all thyroid function and not just the TSH. If your free t3 is high, you may need to take a t3 medication as well. All the best to you!

Hi Everyone! Not new to sp, but never thought to look for a hypothroid team! Yay, so glad I looked! I have been hypo probably most of my life, but didn't get diagnosed until I was 40ish. Since then, I have researched and have been educating myself on the subject. Until 2 years ago, I was undertreated and finally found a doc that would listen and was willing to look at all my thyroid tests and treat the symptoms. I do have Hashi's and from what I have been reading, all bets are off with thryoid tests. The doc suggested cytomel and that has made a world of difference. Since I started taking it, I have lost over 20 lbs, but still have to watch my diet. Sometimes my appetite is out of control. So anyhoo, I just feel like I need to be with some of my thy sisters and brothers to get comfort and support and share some experiences. Love and Light to you all!

Hey. I am new to all of this. My mom had hypothyroidism. And for some years I've been normal, but just got back from doctor's today and she says she suspects hypothyroidism at my level of 6. She said she'll have to run more tests and is going to check me again in 3 months. My triglycerides also came out high and she wants me to modify my diet to see if those change in three months. She says that my thyroid level is not high enough yet to warrant medication and that if my triglycerides don't improve within three months she will give me medication. I have gained some unexplained weight and I am 25 years old. I am hoping that they will get me on meds soon if I need them so that they can treat it better. Is there anything I need to know about this whole process? Any tips or advice anyone can give me? If so, please inbox it to me. Thank you.

My TSH increased from 0.06 in October to 17.32 last week. My SF T4 went down from17.6 to 8.6. he prescribed me levothyroxine 50mcg as a starting dose to be increased gradually in case it affects my heart. In the last month my weight has increased a lot. All the weight I lost on spark over the last couple of years has come back on. Till I started to feel so ill, I walked a lot. I have gone back to a strict calorie count but the weight is still creeping up. I wont get on the scales anymore because of the affect it is having on my moral. It has got to the stage that I am scared to eat!

Happy New Year, Myrna !
Nice to meet you !
You said that your Dr. told you that you should feel better,
in four months. Is that because he has prescribed you something ?
In Canada, our Dr.s prescribe thyroxin, a synthetic thyroid
hormone. I have been on thyroxin for years, with no adverse
effects ! If your Dr. HAS prescribed you some thyroxin - as he said -
you should be feeling better, soon ! Did you ask your Dr. about any
health concerns restricting your exercise ? You should check with
him first, then, start getting some fresh air, and starting a walking
program. You will want to do this with a friend, or neighbor, or a
relative. Walking is a good form of exercise, because it is low-impact.
You would want to be wearing some good walking shoes, so that
you do not injure yourself. The pair that I am wearing now, has been
designed for walkers, and I got them in black, so they always look
smart. I would encourage you to talk to your physician, about all the
exercises he thinks would be safe for you to do. Then, go to it !
Perhaps, get others to join you, for the fun of it ! We all should be moving
more ..!
Please re-visit this thread, to tell us how things are going !

Hello, my name is Myrna. I am 62 years old and live in England. Due to my deteriorating health I have not walked much or done any significant exercise. The Dr said I should be a lot better in about 4 months. I really hope he is right. Most of all I hope I get more energy and the headaches stop. I cant think too much about what a non working thyroid has done to my weight. If I do I will give up altogether. So I will take things one day at a time and never give up hope. It is at times like these that spark friends are essential. I am hoping that some of you will have tips for how I can improve my health and start to lose the weight that is piling on day by day despite holding down my calories. Thank God for Spark.

Hi !
PRAIRIECROCUS here !
I am your new Team Leader !
I have been hypothyroid, for several years, now !
My Dr. noticed that my thyroid wasn't working properly,
from the TSH results, on a blood test. I have been on
Thyroxin, ever since, and have not noticed any adverse
effects.
With the festive Holiday Season, now upon us, I would like
to wish everyone a joyous, and fulfilling time !

Hi, my name is Kelly and I have been hypothyroid for about six years now. The first doctor I saw didn't do anything about my abnormal test results and said they were off due to the loss of my fiancé. There was no need for me to take action. A year later, my regular doctor saw the test results and flipped out that nothing had been done. (Needless to say, the first doctor no longer works for that clinic.) An ultrasound was done on my thyroid and I was told it looks like swiss cheese, there are holes all in it. I am not sure what that means. I am and have been for a while, taking Levoxyl. My blood test all come back with in normal range, and show that the drug is doing it's job. However, I am so tired I fight to keep my eyes open, even after what I thought was a good nights sleep. I cannot focus. I have no energy, therefore, don't exercise and cannot lose weight. Lately, I seem to eat everything in sight, but think that is from feeling depressed because I am so tired and can't focus. I desperately need to lose weight, get focused and be able to keep up with my daily list of things to do. And trust me it is a very long list. Any advice is welcome.

Hello. My name is Irene or Renie. I'm 70 years old and live in northern Utah. I've taken Synthroid for ages. About 4-5 years ago while running scans for other things discovered my thyroid covered in little 'goiters.' I thought that was a thing of the past with our salt. As I've gotten older, I seem to be dealing with more and more things that cause my weight to skyrocket. Very depressing.

Every time I'm put on a new medication, it affects something else--usually my blood sugar. I'm trying to figure out what's happening right now with that. My Endochrinologist says my thyroid feels okay (whatever that means), but still keeps me on the thyroid medication. I have problems with SAD, depression including ideas of committing suicide, insomnia, high BP, high cholesterol, you name it, I've probably got it.

To make things even harder to deal with, I'm hypersensitive to most medications and have reactions.

I'm so grateful that my diabetic nurse/dietition recommended SP. It has been a literal lifesaver.

Thank you, for being here when I needed you.

Renie

I was a part of Sparkpeople several years ago and had to subscribe again. I have hypothyroidism and take a high dosage of synthroid. The dosage has stabilized for the past 1.5 years. I started to feel tired in the spring and we could not find the reason until late November when I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. I am on a CPAP machine and feeling much better. I also have mild SAD and thought it was just one of the "living in the north" problems but it isn't. Only good thing - it came late and seems to be leaving early due to the fact we don't have the real short days here.
I have quite a bit of weight to loose and need to commit to loosing it. It will be a journey but one I am willing to take. Being healthy is very important.

Hello, I am 52 and I have had a thyroid problem all my life had it taken out when I was 4. It is hard to lose weight, I have little or no energy just find myself not wanting to do anything but sit around. I have to make myself exercise even get up to clean the house. I fell so lazy. I have tried all types of thyroid med and finely went to a dr that really helped me understand how to take it and what to do. First you have to take it on a empty stomach 1hr before eating and drink plenty of water. That is hard for me cause I cant stand water. I am making it but it is a hard road for the weight loss and energy.

Hi. I have lost lots of weight here at Spark, as you see. Just recently broke the hip and shoulder and as I was tested in the hospital, they found problems with sugar, thyroid, blood pressure, cholesterol, female problems, etc. I am now gaining weight back. I am trying to continue to eat healthy. But, I am an emotional eater, so it is a downward spiral sometimes. The let hurts more now than ever.

I have been with Sparkpeople since October and learning so much. Tomorrow I begin taking thyroxin, not keen on the idea but looking forward to feeling better, having more energy and hopefully being able to lose weight a little `easier`, its never `easy` but it could be a little less of a struggle! emoticon

Hello
I was diagnoised two months ago but I knew something was wrong for the past two years but the doctors never tested me. Then when he finally did, he said that my thyroid was underactive. I have been on my meds for two months now and it feels like my symptoms have gotten worst. The retest said that my thyroid is normal now with the meds. I have eliminated junk food and soda but I am still gaining weight. I am always tired and my whole body is sore. All this has just recently happened to me since I have been on the meds. I find this condition is very frustrating. At first I thought it was no big deal and that it would be an easy fix with medicine. But now I find it an everyday struggle. I am drinking vitamin water and one low carb Monster Enery Drink just to be able to function everyday. Anyone with any advice is very much appreciated. Nice to meet you all and I enjoy learning from and working with you.

hi everyone,

I am Claire. I was recently diagnosed and realize I have a lot to learn. I just got my 2nd test results back and it said my TSH? is good yet I realize after reading some post on here there are more detailed tests I should have. The energy is a hard thing for me...I wonder if this hasn't been going on for awhile. Because for about 2 or so years, I have had very little energy. not able to get out. always tired and having to sleep. how the devil to you get to the point to feel able to exercise.
any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Everyone!

I am new to SparkPeople, but not to Thyroid probs! For those of you who are recently diagnosed, my best advice is stay on your meds. I have fallen off the medicine wagon several times over the past 9 years and I always felt horrible. I am here to take off all this extra weight I have packed on in those years!

Any special diet ideas that work best for us? Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

Haley

Welcome New Members, LOL I am new to this group myself. I hope to get by the library today because I have much to learn. My meds seem to be helping already but I know that there can be many ups and downs. I want to be prepared for my next doctor visit.
Perhaps I can better help my Mom who is still very symptomatic.

Hello my name is Kristy and I am new to the Hypo team!! I was very excited to see a team on here for people that have Hypo problems. I myself have been dealing with Hypo for the past 5 years and was actually diagnosed this year with Hoshimotos Disease. In the past five years my level of meds has never stayed the same and has continued to increase until I hit 300mcg. I have also been thru the battle of being on a synthetic medication (Levoxel) that my body was not absorbing, and now have been switched to a non synthetic medication that my body is now absorbing. I hope that we can all be a great support to one another because I have found that a lot of people just don't understand this condition and how challenging it can be to have it (no energy, not losing weight). I am also a Asthmatic and have been since the age of 3 (I am now 33)so the steroidal medication for that also make losing weight hard. During the past 5 years I have also had a thyroid cancer scare, thank God that came out to not be cancer! I am glad to be here and look forward to getting support and information as well as offering it to all of you!!

Hi everyone my name is Lisa and I am 22 years old. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism when I was 12. I had no symptoms but was diagnosed after my pediatrician felt that my thyroid might be enlarged. I think I was lucky that the doctor found it before I developed any symptoms because I kind of grew up knowing that I had to do all these things to keep in shape and stay healthy, I did not have to learn to do them in the middle of my life.

Hi, I'm new. I joined this team because I think it's impeding my weight loss. I've hit a big plateau and I thought a big part was because I was out of my synthroid for a while. Would this be the cause? I know it sounds stupid. I've spoken to my doctor and she's checked my levels, when I wasn't out of the meds. I just started them again yesterday.

Hi Everyone.... I've had a thyroid problem for past 10 years, the first 3 years it was over active had it zapped with radioactive iodine and they over done it so now its under active. I've had problems losing the weight but this week I have managed to lose 4lb

New member. Been taking meds for Hypothyroid since my 20's, so that's 30+ years. I never had good control of my weight, always 20-40 pounds over the max that the doctors wanted to see.
Started a new job last year with rotating 12 hour shifts and desk work to boot. Eating habits went out the door. Working to get back down to less than an 1/8 of a ton.
Mom has hypothyroid and so does one of my daughters.

Hi - I'm new to Spark People and am wondering if my thyroid is preventing me from losing weight. I work out 4-5 times a week and control my calories to 1000-1200 a day. I'm 41(today!), 5'4" and currently 159 lbs. The weight just won't come off. Last fall, by TSH was 5.30 and 5.18 which is just above normal I think, but the range for "normal" is changing among the medical profession. I'm often cold, have dry skin, lose a clump of hair each shower, all symptoms of a thyroid condition. I'm curious, what where your thyroid numbers to be diagnosed? I'm debating calling my GP to see an endocrinologist. Help!

Hi! I'm new to Spark, as well as to the team. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism in May of last year, after gaining 15-20 lbs a year for 3 years. My mother has thyroid problems too so this is a family thing. I'm taking a T4 supplement that has boosted my metabolism enough that my weight is staying steady instead of increasing, and I'm hoping that exercising more and eating better will shed some pounds :-) I'm looking forward to talking with people who know what I'm going through!

Goals:
4/30 - 180
5/30 - 172
6/30 - 162 (wedding)
7/30 - 152
8/06 - 140 (vacation)

Rewards:
180 lbs: Mani/Pedi
160 lbs: Hair cut
140 lbs: New clothes

Hi, my name is Mantissa Schuler. I am 31 and the mother of two wonderful children. I was diagnosed just this week w/ hypothyroid. I was steadily losing weight, then I began to gain again, despite no really big changes, so I knew something was awry. My Doctor told me the birth of my son 3 months ago, coupled with family history did my thyroid in. I am concerned about getting my levels right, but excited about the prospect of getting my weight loss back on track! I am glad for this group, and hope we can all learn and be of great support to one another! Mantissa

Today the doctor called and told me that my hypothyroid is caused by Hashimoto, autoimmune disease. I also found out that it normally runs in the family, no one in my family has it, but they all have many of the symptoms, and they dont believe they have ever been tested. This may be a helpful finding for my mom and sisters.

I wish you all success in your Weight Loss Goals!!

Hi, I just recently in the last week found out that I have a Hypo Thyroid. I am going to be starting medication in the next couple days and I am worried about possible side effects. I really don't know much about this condition other than what I found out on the internet. I am not too sure about foods etc. and if they affect the condition etc. I just had my baby girl in August 2008 and am I very proud mommy!! I gained over 50 lbs with my pregnancy and have been working to get rid of the extra weight. I have been working out daily, doing Turbo Jam and other cardio and weights and following through with my spark people. I was losing about 2 pounds a week but now it has slowed to 1 pound a week and I am worried I wont reach my goal. Now with my new found knowledge of my thyroid condition i am hoping I can learn ways to have my body help me lose weight rather that fighting against my body to do it. i have been very good at sticking to spar people and working out, so i will continue this but if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them!!

I wish you all success in your Weight Loss Goals!!

Hey everyone! So glad to find this group. I was diagnosed 9 years ago with hypo when I became preg. with my daughter. The doctor put me on Livoxyl(sp?) right away. I actually lost 11lbs in the beginning of my pregnancy. I was okay throughout the whole thing, very very tired though. All I did was work and sleep, or so it felt like. After my daughter was born, I still took my medication... until she was about 4 months old and we moved to NC. I didn't have any clue about Thyroid disease. Didn't know you had to take the meds basically the rest of your life. We'll just say, no meds, depression, no friends, no outlet for anything... I gained about 90lbs. I've always struggled with my weight, but that's when it became really hard. Finally after a year or more, and I went back to a doctor again, of course my levels were high, so I've been back on meds ever since. The last couple years though I've been having some trouble. Last year, in June, I had to have a biopsy done because of nodules they found on the thyroid. Two on the right side and one on the left. It hurt. I kept quoting scripture to myself. I cried. And cried. Big baby, I know! But... Anyway... the results came back fine, Praise Jesus! My levels are pretty much staying the same, but! I had to go to an Allergist recently because of hives. I don't get little ones, oh no! I get the ones that make my body swell all over. My eyes, mouth... face, and neck are all the newest spots. When the Al ran a TON of blood work, it came back that I have antibodies that are attacking the thyroid...?? Levels usually run from 0-60. Mine are at 2300. He said there's nothing to be done but make sure my meds are takin and that I'm check ruitinely by my Primary. I just want to be healthy, I want to believe that with a better lifestyle and regular excerise, that I can be fine. Maybe not "cured" but not have to have my meds changed and upped. I'm up to 150. I would like to go down and stay down.

My name is Candy and I have had hypothroid for a long time. My med keeps it under control most of the time. I am allergic to a lot of meds and the meds I can take every once in a while will act up. I then have to go off all of them and add them back in slowly to see which ones is causing the problem. When that happens I have trouble otherwise my med takes care of it. My weight gain comes from being an emotional eater rather than my thyroid. My thyroid doesn't help any of that I know, but I need to get a handle on the emotional eatting.
