I had heparin shots when I was in the hospital... I couldn't stand it!! I don't know how you do it!!

Feel happy that you are on coumadin for life, I am on twice daily shots of lovenox for life, I would much rather take a small pill than keep shooting my belly!

When I get to feeling sorry for myself about being on coumadin for life I try to remember that it could be a whole lot worse. Then I end the pity party and move on!

We are retired Military, so no insurance help. I just looked them up on line. Whew, expensive! Guess I will just stay with my coumadin clinic!

Have a healthy, happy day!

Hi
I got my unit from Raytel over 3 years ago. Thankfully, insurance paid for it. There are so many misconceptions regarding anti-coagulants, it is not the terrible life sentence that most people think it is, it does require monitoring and some caution in daily living, but in my case, it is not nearly as restrictive as my severe osteoporosis.
have a wonderful day !!

Hi Lovejoy. You are so right on the blood thinner statement. It just seems easier to let folks call them that rather than try to explain the difference!

Where did you get your home testing unit? I am on Coumadin for life, and would like to have a home testing unit. Like you, rather than adjust the coumadin, I would adjust my diet.

Hi all, My name is Lovejoy. I has an aortic valve replacement 3 1/2 years ago. Like others, I am on an anti-coagulant (warfarin) for the rest of my life. My question is: why do people refer to anti-coagulants as "blood thinners" ? Because that is not what they are. Anti-coagulants do not change the vicosity of the blood, but in actuallity inhibit the clotting factor.
I have a home testing unit and check my INR at will. Actually a huge factor in keeping my INR stable. I eat what I want when I want. I keep my INR between 3.5-4.5. But do to variance in accuracy (.6) I don't adjust my medication for anythin less than a 5.5. I will more likely adjust my diet for the next couple of days.I would much rather my INR be a little high than a little low !
I also have a number of other health issues along with a recent weight gain that I am not happy with but I am at a loss as how to change it.
