Sorry to hear your first 5K was disappointing, but you learned a lesson in racing - and that is to know your race. My first marathon was the Miami ING and it was so packed with over 20,000 runners, most of whom were doing the half marathon, that it was what I call "full contact marathoning" for the first 13.1 miles. People kicked the back of my foot, I got elbowed, and got startled as people squeezed around on my right, despite my best attempts to stay on the right to get out of the faster runner's way! All Disney races are like that, too, although I found the racers to be less aggressive than Miami.

The good news is that your next 5K will probably not be that crowded. If you're not sure, research the race before signing up and read reviews about it.

Also, know that it's not uncommon for our devices to be off a bit from the actual course length due to hiccups in satellite communication. Usually race directors will have measured the course by terrestrial means, such as an odometer on a car or bike. However the difference between 2.68 and 3.1 is quite a bit, so the course was probably a bit short.

I am glad to hear that you are not letting this one experience discourage you from doing future races.

Sorry to hear about your first 5k. A few of our 5k's are on the bike path and it can really be a pain. I made the mistake of getting behind too many people my last one and I got stuck running much slower than usual. Lesson learned! I'm sure your next 5k will be better!

It's really a bummer that you feel disappointed by your first 5k, but in my experience, not only is that pretty normal, but it only gets easier from here. For my first 5k, I didn't anticipate all the hills on the course, which I wasn't yet prepared to run. So my time was so disappointing. I finished third from last, and only because my darling SO slowed down to run through after me to let me "win." Like you, I finished in about 40 minutes.

But if you stick with it, it gets so much better! Running is really all about practice, so you'll get so much faster and stronger if you keep running and racing. I ran my first 5k at a 13 minute mile, I ran my most recent at a 9:30. And that was starting from not being a runner at all! Don't give up! Find your next race and keep running!

Update: well the 5K yesterday was disappointing ( for me, the hubby did great). Running in your neighborhood I'd WAY different than running with1000+ ppl, walking in front of you, running on top of you, even bikers were on the same path. I had a hard time getting into a good pace and could not keep my music on because I had to be on alert with my surroundings. I was happy when I saw my finished time of 41 min until I looked at my fitbit and saw that the coarse was not a true 5K ( they shorten the coarse to 2.68) meaning my time was way NOT good! But oh we'll and moving on to the next 5K!

Welcome. Good luck at your race!

My guy and I run together, and it's definitely harder to skip a run when I have someone motivating me or counting on me to motivate him.

Welcome aboard!
So wonderful that you were able to embark on this journey together. So much easier with A partner, so much better with The partner! ;)

Have fun on race day!
