Hi! Here's the condensed novel of why I am here :)

I recently relocated to my dream town on the PNW coast to finish my enviro science degree as a non-traditional older student. I've battled with weight issues most of my life, although I recently realized I wasn't actually overweight until my late 20s when I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I had internalized my mother's self esteem issues with her weight -- which she wasn't overweight either -- from the time I was a kid until quite recently.

I've ballooned up to 220 lbs on a 5'4" frame, which makes it hard to impossible to do the things I love like hiking, kayaking, and climbing. Further, my degree and career path will require that I be able to keep up physically with the demands of the job -- doubly important since I will be competing with younger candidates for field positions.

My wake up call came on Friday when I met with my new primary care doctor. My blood pressure is high for the first time in my life -- she gave me 6 weeks to bring it down or I'm on meds. My eczema is back, something I haven't had to deal with since I was 12. My thyroid levels were off for the first time in 3 years. Worse, I had trouble finding clean clothing that actually fit in my closet just so I could go to the appointment!

I'm active -- walk several miles per day, hike or play outdoors on the weekends, do daily yoga and light strength training 3x per week. My problem is managing my food. No binge behaviours, I just snack all day long or eat overly large portions of foods I love.

I'm a long time vegetarian but cheese is really the only animal product I eat, but cheese seems to really set me off into overeating so I am drastically cutting back on dairy -- only enjoying it in moderation on the occasional pizza/flat bread, dining out when options are limited, or when it is the main protein in a favorite and otherwise balanced meal (looking at you, halloumi fajitas!). Portion control is my other kryptonite, so I took some time this morning to set up my kitchen to make it easier to measure out portions for each meal.

I'm hoping tracking and joining Spark for accountability will help me hit my goals! I'm a bit shy and nervous about being honest to strangers (or even people I know) about my weight loss efforts and goals, and my partner is helpful but she doesn't really relate to my problems since weight has never been an issue for her.

I looking forward to getting to know some others on here and maybe putting together an accountability group at some point :)
