Hello All! I'm new and hoping to get some motivation along with some good information about weight lifting, and maybe make a few friends along the way.
Nice to meet you all!

I am new to Sparkpeople and the Iron Maiden Team. I have been lifting weights for about eight years. Competed in Olympic Style Weightlifting for a few years as a Master, but my knees basically wore out. Now, I still love weight training, but I go low impact all the way!

I am not at all concerned about building muscle or "bulking up" as some call it. I am proud of my muscles and what motivated me to lose (and continue to lose) so much weight was that I knew that somewhere under the "fluff" were some gorgeous muscles. I wanted to see them and feel them. They are slowly showing. I am not as strong as I used to be (from several years of serious weight loss), but I know that the strength will come back when I stabilize my diet and weight. Who knows, maybe then I will turn to power lifting!

I love the feel of weights in my hands. I am proud of my callouses from lifting. I feel empowered as a person and a woman each time I meet a new goal.

I'm excited to join this team! I'm convinced that regular and challenging strength training is key to changing my body. I have been lucky enough to have participated in a 12 week "boot camp" at my local Y through work, and lost about 40 pounds since March. A lot of my results so far are due to resistance & weight training.

I'm hoping to learn new techniques and to stay motivated in strength training in order to become the fit and strong person I am meant to be. Thanks for having me, Iron Maidens :D

I am new to the team. I am not too sure if I selected the right team or not. I am interested in getting suggestions and workouts for strenth training. The beginning of the year I started back to gym and did not get any significant results just sitting at the machines. I quit going in April and just started back this month(August). I am taking a different approach. I need more interval training. I want to do more combination exercises with dumbbells and mix up the cardio with slow, fast paces. I'm also interested in knowing how to use the cable machine and Smith machines to my advantage.

Hi Jazygirl,
For the lower body that isn't too hard on the knees I like the butt lifts and glute kickbacks. I am not sure how the thigh adductors would feel, but I love those too. I love going to bodybuilding.com website for workout ideas. You can tailor the weight to work with your goals

HI. I'm new but have done weight lifting in the past. I would like to get back into it but I have knee problems which prevent me from doing a lot of lower body work outs w/weights as it just hurts soooo bad. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as my weight and physical fitness not to mention my proportions have gotten way out of control. emoticon

Hi, I'm new. I've been lifting on and off since the early 1980s. But I've been off due to recurrent mono and polycystic overy disease. My body has seemed to have settle down and my energy levels are rising. Right now I am lifting light until I feel more confident.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the team. Before I got married and had my daughter, I would lift. I've just started back up, since I'm in a weight loss competition at work. I look forward to being a member of this team.

I'm new to the team and am very interested in getting help with cleaning up my diet to make the most of the strength training I'm doing. If anyone would be interested in helping me with this, I sure would appreciate it. My biggest issue with my diet is that I work VERY full-time and don't have time to cook. I need foods that are convenient and easy for me to pick up and run to work with. I eat so much fast food and the like because I'm always without a plan for lunch or dinner.

Glad to find this board!

My name is Darlene and I am new to the team. I have always been pretty active, except for a two year period where I was pretty sick. For the past year or so I have been getting stronger everyday and I just started weight training.

It feels wonderful to be moving again! My present goal is working on building muscle- I lost a lot during my inactive period.

Looking forward to learning more about weight lifting and overall fitness. I would like to make some friends too :)

Hey, guys!
I'm new to this group.
I plan on joining the US Air Force as soon as I get down to 165 pounds. I'm 18. I live in a small town and work in a McDonald's in Wal-Mart (it is so easy to resist fast food now; it is so gross) and I see my generation just go into Wal-Mart and cause trouble, and nothing more. They aren't going anywhere in life and I'm determined not to let that happen to me. I'm meant for great things.
When it comes to nutrition, I'm real careful about what I eat; I like eating lowcarb/lowcal with high protein and high fiber.
I hope to shed this dead weight and fly away with the Air Force.

Hello Everyone.
I am new to this group.
I am here to learn . I mostly observe, there is not much I can contribute to your group at this time.
I want to build muscles and shed the fat layer hat I am carrying around with me.
I am not very savvy when it comes to nutrition / once again yet :)))
I some times take a while to get it, but when the light comes on I got it for good :)))
I am not an English Native, so please bear with me.
I am grateful to have found this group

Hello everyonne,

I just lost 50lbs but I'm noticing some flab here and there, so I'm wanting to get firm and toned. I read a lot of Oxygen magazine which has a lot of good information on eating clean and how to strength train properly.

I have some free weights in my basement and a basic machine. I don't have a gym membership but there is a local gym that I could join if I need to. I think I've done pretty good with my home gym; I can do the same exercises that I did when I had my trainer at my old gym.

I'm hoping for some tips and tricks on how to lose the belly fat and generally reduce my body fat percentage. Last time I measured, I was at 20.5%. I'd like to get down to around 17% or so.

And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you want it to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks?
Would you find yourself...
Find yourself afraid to see?

Hi y'all.

Years ago, I did The Firm workouts with weights, and that's about all the strength background I have. I am now doing Jim Karas' Interval Strength Training according to the schedule in his book, "The Cardio-Free Diet." I am doing about a 40 minute workout. I love it. On my off days, I still like to walk, using Debbie Rocker's weighted Walkvest and 30 minute DVD.

I consider myself a beginner, and am still learning proper form, etc. I wish I had a trainer to make sure I've got it down properly, and maybe soon I will get one. I dunno. Any videos out there that are good? I am using the SPRI brand Resistance bands and loops.

I'm excited to be here!

Hi everyone! I'm not new to SP but am being introduced to a new way for me to become healthy, which is the majority of my program being strength training. I love the idea...just not overly familiar with weight lifting other than "piddling" around with light dumbbells. A very good friend of mine coaxed me into emailing her son who is a personal trainer and owns a gym. He has started me out with a nutrition and exercise plan that will hopefully start to transform this obese body into a healthy, muscular one.

I look forward to being a part of this team for the support and knowledge I know I will need.

Hey! I'm Sarah. I'm all new to actual strength training. I'm trying hard to get healthier and have been doing a lot of cardio lately. Since I've stuck to that I'm working on finding things I enjoy that will make a big difference.

I started Jillian Michael's 30 day Shred the other day and have been having a good time getting my butt kicked on that. Gotta start somewhere right?

Anyways, I just wanted to introduce myself to the team. I look forward to learning from you all!!

Hey Jackie, I'm a big fan of the 30 Day Shred. I have a team for it. You can check it out if you want. I'm getting ready to start "Making the Cut". I've read the book, I just need to commit. Have a great day and don't beat yourself up for one day of bad eating. Just get back on track.

Hello all! I'm new to the team, and starting to get into stregnth training to improve my triathlon performance. I've done mostly endurance work outs for a while now and realize that I need to focus on creating more lean body mass! I've always been alittle nervous about stregnth training because my body gets bulky fast. But I'm really tired of avoiding it. So I'm here and will be lifting 2x a week in combination with my tri work outs! good luck to all.

Hi my name is Kelly. I am not new to SP but new to this team. I took up ST in 1996 & have done it off & on since then. I haven't done it consistently in a while but am getting back into it. I was apart of a gym where I did Bodypump & loved it, but it closed down. I have recently found another place where the class is offered & am going to check on that tomorrow. I have never been what I would consider a small person & I put on muscle very quickly. I don't mind looking bulky, which is unlike most women, I would love to look like a body builder...not a man in the face but the body is a different story. I hope to get to you all better & share our challenges & victories along this journey.

Kelly

Hi. I have been on SP for about a month now. I have lifted weights off and on since high school. I like how I look and feel after lifting, it's just actually getting the motivation to do it. I know and understand why it is important and since both my grandmothers have/had osteoporosis, it is important for me to get on a better routine and to stick to it. So, I am hoping that by joining this team, I will be more motivated to stick to a program!

I joined this group because I know that weight training is VERY important to weight loss and that muscle burns more calories than fat; so bring on the muscle. I must admit I have been dragging my feet about starting weight lifting, because I really don't like to do it. I love riding my exercise bike and walking, but that alone is not helping me take off the weight so I need something to give me that edge I need to loose.

Well I use a lot of the weight machines at my gym such as leg press, chest press, etc.. I do that every other day. I work both upper and lower body, but i dont have a set plan. And Im unsure about free weights how to use those in my routine. What days to work what muscle groups, like a schedule.. etc.???

Hey Everyone!

I've been with SP for almost 2 years. I lost 81lbs approx. 5 years ago. Fought the yo-yo 15lbs the past 2 years. Now I have changed my goal again and have just a few pounds to go.

I work out 6 days per week with wts and cardio everyday. My favorite group class is boot camp every Friday night. My biggest achievement this week is 210 military push ups. I have a total of 5 kids(some mine, one his and one someone else's!) My biggest down fall is food. I love food and it loves me! We have a great relationship going on!

I'm excited to join the team. I wish I would have known about it sooner!

Precision Nutrition has a lot of exercises with video. You have to sign up to be a member but it's free. http://www.precisionnutrition.com/

You could also check out some books like The New Rules of Weight Lifting and The New Rules of Weight Lifting for Women.

What types of things are you doing now?

Hi Iron Maidens,
I've been with SP since end Jan 09 and have lost 10 lbs and 11 Inches. I'm focussed and passionate about my fitness workouts but am now at the next stage - weight lifting for that extra benefit of toned muscles.

Am completely new at weight lifting although my son has a small home gym and looks fab, so I've just borrowed his 5lb dumbells (was using 2.5) but want to make sure I do this right!!!

So your guidance will be greatly appreciated and welcome.

I'm from the UK., and my name is Mandy. See you around.

No quitting, No Excuses.

Hello! I'm a new team member and wanted to introduce myself. I'm new to sparkpeople but not to weight loss (previously tracked on The Daily Plate). I started making small changes in my life on 3.16.08 and recently celebrated my 1 year "new me" anniversary! emoticon

I come from a different perspective than most, starting my journey at almost 400 pounds. I have since lost almost 100 pounds and hope to be out of the 300's this week!

It's been a long road getting here but I started to become excited about the fitness aspect of my journey just within the last few months. Strength training has become my fitness passion!

I'm grateful that I have quite the work out partner in my husband. We strength train with a rotating schedule (chest, back, shoulders, arms, legs) with 2 days off a week. Our daily lift is currently around 10 total sets, 2 sets/15 reps each exercise (x5). We do plan on adding an additional set soon for 3 sets each exercise/daily total of 15 sets. We round out our day by including 30 minutes to an hour of cardio (recumbent bike) most days.

I have a LOT to learn as I'm just starting out. I guess the question I have is this: Is this enough? Any suggestions for improvement are welcome!

I'm looking forward to getting to know you as I rock my way to goal!

emoticon

Hi, just joined. I am a Gutemalan coffee farmer, one of the 6.9% of the women who run coffee farms here. I am on vacation and a little distracted, but I am really looking forward to being part of this group. I started bobdy pump a few weeks ago and love it. Now I need to proceed and look forward to your help.

Hi Everyone!
I am new to this team but not to Spark … I have been around - on and off - for about 3 years now and, for just as long, have been losing and regaining the saaaame 10 -15 lbs …. talk about yo-yo syndrome and you are looking at me! Anyways, I have decided that enough is enough - it is time to take back control of my body. For the past 3 years I have been at war with the rolls of fat that have taken up occupancy in my body and have refused to surrender despite my efforts to get rid of it! Its now time to call in the big ‘guns’ and muscle those fat rolls right out of my body. My battle plan is to get more serious about weight training by consistently following a more structured routine - see my Spark page. I workout at home (do not have a gym membership) using dvds, a treadmill, exercise ball, a Smart Gym, dumbbells and resistance bands. I know that I can get a fairly good workout using what I have. I just need some motivation and ideas in creating an effective routine. Based on the posts I have read I know that I will get both of these two things from this team. I look forward to getting to know you all and learning a lot along the way!

I've always trained doing 1 to 2 body parts once a week. It's always worked for me and it gives your muscles time to rest and get restored. Here's my week.

Monday: Chest and Back
Tuesday: Cardio only
Wednesday: Legs
Thursday: Cardio only
Friday: Arms and Shoulders

I'm off on weekends. I do cardio strength training days also, and abs can be done everyday.

Angela
