Love, love Sci-Fi. Adore Technology and Math. I have been a bit of cross-platform educational wanderer most of my life. Studied the Sea, Biology, Weather, Chemistry, Astronomy, Geology, Computers, Engineering and Math. Love Art.

Worked as an Industrial Designer for 40 years. Mad with shop skills too. There are few who can match my Art skills. I was forced to drop career path when my NASA Dad had a major stroke, The medical system is broken for his needs, that leaves me to protect him.

I am a returnee to SparkPeople because I got too slow to catch my 2 year-old grandson;
This body needs a tune up after years of neglect. I took for granted those details and my understanding of that. Here to rectify that.

Came to this site to find fellow geeks and explorers.

I've always been interested in the sciences, especially the geology, space, and biology aspects of it. I'm currently attending college, with a goal right now as an associates degree in biology. Afterwards I'm going for a bachelors and head up from there. I've started late in college (at least for science) because I'm really good at drawing/painting and everyone always told me to go into art and I never considered combining the two. Now, after doing a few commissions, I've decided to just get a degree in just science with doing art as a hobby. Hopefully, I will become a biologist one day, just unsure of what field.

"Very few people REALLY seek knowledge in this world, few really ask. On the contrary, they try to wring from the unknown the answers they have already shaped in their own minds - justifications, confirmations, forms of consolation without which they can't go on. To really ask is to open the door to the whirlwind. The answer may annihilate both the question and the questioner." Marius, The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice

Yah Biologist! I am a biologist. I have a little bit of pharma (did a few years working on binding assays in bug neural proteins) and ecology was one of my degrees! Spiffy.

What work have you done as an ecologist, if any?

Hey there. I'm a biologist -- consider myself a combo immunologist/pharmaceutical type/ecologist. Since those have all been my career/training.

I am here because I saw this team existed and decided to check it out.

I'm also interested in areas of science I have no or little (other than a course or two) formal training in: geology, engineering (especially as to how it relates to how the ancients did it), astronomy, arcane branches of mathematics. (Yes, I hate calculus, but hey....)

Working on healthy: Nutritious, sustainable, day to day, low carb-ish living. AND getting out and about and exercising... Yep, better do that!

Hey Stan. This team has a mish-mash of science/geeky types! Lots of researchers for sure...very impressive ones I might add. And I do believe we have a bio person here or there...not sure if it's biology vs.some other bio science though.

There's also MORE than a few who totally rock the science of exercising and eating...so you're good there.

Nice to have you aboard.

Hi. I'm a biologist, minored in chemistry, love physics, work with engineers. Is that close enough? Anyway, this is the closest group to my professional interest. I think sparkpeople is great because it seems to be pretty solid on the science side. My main goal now is just to live healthy, and to try to make up for not doing so well in the past. Any other biologists out there?

My primary body issues is now on to be healthier. I started spark with no weight program, but I made a reset and now I am on to gain about 5 kg (~11 pounds). It would be nice to gain muscle, but it has lower priority... it's just about that I want weight gain mostly from meat.

As for the activities I like running and cycling. Now running is in the plan, but I might try out other things too. However the current values in the fitness minutes counter are not from serious physical activity... I tracked the regular walking between workplace and home.

Further addition to introducing myself, I am a foreign English speaker, and sadly I am not very good with the grammar. Also I read mostly technical literature, so I hope I can improve my vocabulary here with terms from other topics. God bless the spell checker!

Many teams certainly have some ebb and flow. There are lots of great folks on spark so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a good community.
So what types of physical activity do you like? Are you going to mostly focus on weight training to gain muscle?

The directions I need for motivation might include, but not limited to:
- regular sport, increased self care & weight gain (preferably in form of muscles)
- home projects and personal development
- study, experiment & research

As it can be seen in my stats, I'm new not only in the team, but in SparkPeople too.
To be honest I only registered to the site to be able to join teams and explore the possibilities in the community, but I found some other resources too that might be interesting as well.

At first look it was appeal to me to be part of a community that has a focus of motivating each other to reach our goals. I picked up some teams that might be interesting to me, and joined in "Motivation, Accountability and Success!", but right after that I become aware that the most of the "latest posts" are from 2010. Than I made a new filter on the teams so I found that this is not only interesting, but seems to have active life in it too.

Hi

I'm a geologist. My last job was working on gas rigs as a mudlogger. That's right I worked as the only girl with 30 guys! The schedule wasn't really as promised (2 weeks on 1 week off turned into 4 months with 3 days off). So, I quit and started working in the environmental field- which is what I do now. I know some folks love the environmental work, I think it is the most boring job ever. emoticon So, I'm planning on returning to the gas industry once I can find a company that will give a respectable work schedule. If anyone out there is working for a great company in this field, please give me a shout! emoticon

As for joining SP, I it all started the day my boyfriend (at the time) game me a scale for Valentine's Day. Once I realized I needed a change and stopped blaming everyone but myself for my weight gain, I signed up. It really is changing my life, and I can't be happier.
emoticon

I joined the team to learn from others with similar interests. Thank you in advance for everything!

Cool! I don't know many people that just defaulted to engineering usually it goes from engineering to accounting, computers, or history :). Way to go!

Hey all...new to this team. Soooo...what brings me here...

Field of choice ~ Engineering...civil. When I was going to school I tried several things...accounting, computers, history...then decided I had better choose. I chose engineering as I've always been good with math.

Sparkpeople ~ My wife started using Sparkpeople about a month or two before me. I decided to use it as well. I can lose some weight...AND I didn't want to sabotage her efforts...and us both being on helps.

SEM Team ~ I saw a post or blog by someone...and saw they were on this team...didn't know it existed...came and took a look...and it sounds interesting!

I'm joined this team because it sounded like fun, and different from my other teams. I love to garden, but do get on the technical side. I can talk about cation exchange capacity till my farmer friends' eyes glaze over like they've been through a Krispy Kreme machine.

The plan is to go for PhD :) And yes, it has been quite a journey! I didn't even mention the other educational diversions! I started Medical Radiography, but ended up having to leave that due to a learning disorder that they couldn't accommodate in that program. I also did some Website Admin courses, but a bad client made me realize I did not want to earn my living doing that!

I'm also very analytical thinker! It really does help in everyday life, even with deciding what's worth worrying about and what to let slide :)

That is quite a voyage to find physics. So are you going to go to a masters or a PhD?

I find science and the scientific method has many uses even in real life, but that's what i get for being an analytical thinker :).

Here your field of choice-
Currently physics, specifically astronomy/astrophysics. My university doesn't offer a specific degree, so I'll have to wait til my Masters to really specialize :)

Here SparkPeople-
I'd be using fitday for a while, but it was bland and I'll only put in my info on good days, making it useless. I LOVE the SparkPoints, the gamer in me driven by such things.

Mostly I want to get fit. I don't want to be the stereotypical blob at the computer, which I was headed towards if I didn't do something about my diet.

Here the SEM Team-
Science is my life :) My father is a PhD in botany, and his love of learning encouraged me and my siblings even at a young age to explore the natural world around us. Why questions were always answered lol. As I grew older science became a way of making sense of things around me, something I grasped onto in high school. Science fairs were my outlet. Even as a small kid my barbies play Mars Explorers rather than house.

I started off in Biology, before I realized it wasn't for me. I bounced around academia for a while, even doing philosophy for a couple of terms, before I settled into physics. I'm loving it here, even though I'm * technically* only in my second year of study with this program.

Oh, and I tend to ramble. Sorry! ^_^

What brought me here? I'm a science & maths enthusiast, trained in applied maths and sought a team more relevant to my interests than the generic teams I was automatically signed onto for age, children's age, weight loss goal & location.

It was incredible. I think I smiled my way through the whole thing (one week ago tonight!) I blogged about it. A feeling I will never forget. Now, waiting for my next one on July 3...and have decided to move on up to 10K.

Good afternoon everybody. New here. I am a Biology professor, immunologist by training and a self described nerd. I would rather be in the lab, dissecting a cat or giving a lecture than most things. Took up running in March and just recently finished my first real race.

We seem to accumulating quite a few math and science people that have found their artistic side! I don't have much of an artistic side but I still think its cool!

I didn't know about this team until today. I'm a chemist with a broad background and working in the field of surfactants. I would eventually like to find my way into art forensics (Joseph Barabe is the inspiration), scientific photography, polymer/microscopy, or some way to combine art and science. I took so many different chemistry classes, but really enjoy the math and analytical part.

Hahah! I took organic and calculus. I'd rather have organic, but I don't have a very mathy mind. I do better linking pathways together.

We actually have several people in this group looking at or are in Environmental careers. It is going to be a big part of the future (actually it is now...).

I wanted to go into an environmental career, and in flipping through the Florida Specifier for environmental professionals, I found that the best employment opportunities were for engineers, not so much for biologists.

Also, I hated college chemistry, and going for engineering gets me out of organic chem. I figured that two extra semesters of calculus was a fair trade for not having to take organic chemistry.

Hi, this is my first team post.

I am a dual Classics/Engineering major at the University of South Florida. My language concentration is in Latin, and I am currently a general engineering major, just changed out of biology.

I started Sparking when I used the recipe calculator to figure out calorie counts for my homemade recipes. I chose to start Sparking over other calorie counters because it tracks other things too, and is a lot like Weight Watchers... without the price tag.

Finally, I discovered the SEM team today browsing for a group of people I could relate to better, with goals in addition to weight loss and fitness... like graduating college.

Hello!!

Hmm.. motivation exploration. Interesting.

Why I have come upon my field of choice: I decided upon engineering back in High School when applying to colleges because I loved math and science, but wanted a field with opportunities for creativity. Mechanical engineering answered that perfectly. Now that I work in the oilfield I've diverged from that goal, but it's an adventurous job that suits me well since I still feel like I'm fresh out of college.

Here to SparkPeople: I realized that I would never stick to any diet or fitness plan without accountability, and after a quick google search one day and exploring a few websites, I realized SP was the right place for me.

Here the SEM Team: I was browsing for teams by "interest" topic, and I found I'm not much into many of the interests listed there, but this one seemed perfect!

Here your field of choice-
I have been working as a medical transcriptionist for over 30 years and am bored. Now that my kids are grown, I decided to go back to school to see about working in some other field. I initially thought about becoming a nurse. My math teacher said I should become a math professor. I looked into the feasibility and decided it was doable. I am really enjoying learning math. I will be finishing precalculus this semester, taking statistics next semester, and calculus in the fall, along with other prerequisite classes. I take two classes a semester and one over the summer because I work full time.

Here SparkPeople-
My friend has to lose weight and I want to lose weight. We decided to e-mail each other what we ate each day. She counted calories. I did not. She lost weight. I did not. I decided to count calories and was googling for a calorie counter when I ran across SP. I love it here. I especially love the recipe calculator, since I usually eat my own cooking.

Here the SEM Team-
I am looking for another math enthusiast with whom I can share my joys of discovery and perhaps help when I get stuck on something.

Kat

I'm a Chemical Engineer - current status is undergrad. I am hoping to go into the renewable energy area, no idea on specialization in that yet. My goals include grad school, but I don't have the gpa for that actually.

I came here because I figure I should indulge this side of me too while I was at it. I use teams to connect to people of like minds, but since I tend to get involved in alot of things I'm not exactly all one thing or another. For example, right now my biggest passion is volunteering at the animal shelter, lol.

I'm an engineer, just graduating school, so I'm pretty unspecialized at the moment but I work on stuff for the navy. I really love problem solving and finding solutions to thing, I find it really fun.
SparkPeople was the first time I've lot weight. I guess I never realized its not always about what you eat but how much of it.
I'm just looking to meet other people on the same journey and share tips and ideas!

My field is Science, more specifically Biology. I have loved science for as long as I can remember. Bill Nye comes to my early memories :). I think the way life works is one of the coolest things ever, so Biology seemed like a good idea to me. I even specialized in Ecology as well as Neurobiology.

SparkPeople got be because I got stuck in my weight loss journey. It has been a valuable resource over the years.

SEM, I think science is awesome and I wanted to find others that felt the same way. Hello are you out there?
