Rock and Roll! That is a good way to check particle size, not so good for the teeth :).

Rolling rocks in your mouth...even COOLER! And when I think about it, it makes total sense about being able to differentiate particle size that way. Better than carrying sieves around for sure.

Hi Jess!

I'm new to the team and I just saw your post. I'm a geologist and graduated from Temple University (Philadelphia, PA). I actually went to field school with Iowa State. Will you be spending time at camp in Shell, WY? (If so, I was very thankful for the amount of exercise I did prior to leaving. They said we did about 350 miles out there.)

As for the rock licking.....

We did it all the time. Kind of gross to think how many people licked those rocks! Generally speaking, there are different reasons to lick rocks. Depending on the minerals involved, there will be a different taste. Different metals taste a little different, ect. Also, this is true for more of the old school geologist- many have rounded off eye teeth from "chewing" rocks. (More of the sedimentary folks.) If you bite off a small piece of the rock and roll it on your tongue you can tell roundness and size of the grains easier in the field.

Hahaha...ok question then....what is the purpose of doing that? Is it to see if there is salt content?

Welcome, Jess!

And guys...I was a geobiology major in college (rock monsters, woo!). We actually *were* encouraged to lick the rocks in mineralogy! Kind of explains a lot, eh? :)

Yup, yup....esp about the rock tasting thing! Apparently both Loren and I must really believe that is what geologist do!

Welcome to the team. Even if it isn't name specific post away! We don't have much geological representation on the team, so there is a lot to teach us.

I was thinking about rock tasting too :). We were not allowed to lick the rocks in school, nor take the volcanic rocks from the parks (the god would get mad).

Welcome to the team Jess. And...nevermind that the name of the site is not entirely accurate for your needs...we kinda morph into whatever direction our fearless leader goes (Loren I mean).

As for your schooling...nice....taste those rocks! Just remember to put them back where you picked them up from! heh.

I was scrolling through the list of boards with college major topics and this seemed the best place for mine, although not entirely accurate.

I'm an undergrad student at the University of Iowa majoring in Environmental Science with an emphasis in Geology. (Minoring in Arabic). (Will be attaining a B.S.)

My name is Jess, I'm 20, just got married, and loooove SP.
