Hi, I live in Waipahu--have just joined SparkPeople, but have been increasing fitness activity, and eating smart since Sept 2009. Have lost 13 pound since then. I'm about to go to the mainland for a week or so, and am hoping to keep up with running and eating smart while on the road. I've packed 2 pr running shoes, and temperate/winter weather workout clothes. We'll see how I do.

Hey everyone. Born and raised in Honolulu and living in Arizona for the past 19 years. The worst thing about the desert besides the heat (120 today) is NO BEACH. We have the Colorado River and lakes but they don't come close to the beautiful beaches in Hawaii.

I'm Keola. Most people out in da O.C. can only handle Ke or Ola, haha. Born in Artesia, Ca, went home to Kea'au, Big Island when I was 4 years old in 1988. I left home when I met my hubby in LAX almost 8 yrs ago!Got back from our wedding on Hilo in Dec. 2008. I'm trying to get healthy so I can wear a bikini and bask in my hotness when i go home to visit next year! oh and eat poke and poi. mmmmmmmm. I miss Hawaiian food so much, I think that's why it's easy to watch what I eat out here... none of da good stuffs to tempt me! ;)

Hi. I was born on Maui, Kula San, and moved to Honolulu when I was 5. Moved to Kailua and raised my family there. Moved to WA about 20 years ago for health and financial reasons. I have been back a few times since then but have developed an extreme fear of flying so probably won't go back again (unless I'm drugged). But all my boys have moved here too and I have 5 beautiful grandchildren that I love to spend time with. This area is beautiful and has a lot of recreation possibilities. I love to bike and hike and don't mind the rain too much.

Aloha! I'm a wahini who once was a kamaaina on Oahu in Honolulu(from age 4-end of 3rd grade). I returned to visit when my daughter was a kamaaina in Wahiwa (also on Oahu) and again for my school's 50th anniversary (of the school not my graduation!)with my dad and sister back in 1999. My sister and I went once again in 2003. I was happy to see that there was a special team for those of us who have roots there.

Aloha `Auinala!! I am new to this team and wanted to introduce myself. I grew up here in the bay area in California. I have alot of family on Oahu, Kihei, Mililani, Waipahu and Waianae. Most of my family migrated there from the Philippines and the rest are natives. I am what the Filipinos call "mestiza", 1/2 Filipino and 1/2 mutt (Caucasian). My mother has many different cultures as part of her ancestry. I have 2 kids, 6 and 3mos. I have been on Spark for a few weeks.

Howzit everybody!! I've been a member of Sparks for a few months, but just found the motivation to get this thing going!! It's awesome to have found this group, cuz we all KNOW it's NOT easy to maintain a healthy lifestyle living in these islands with all the ono grindz... but I'm tired of being the chunky sister, cuz, friend, wife... or as my Mom calls it "chubetta"!! LOL I'm ready to give it my best shot!! HELPPP!! :)

We are 20 minutes from the New Hampshire border and about 1 hour away from Boston, in Middlesex County, very rural area.

My daughter's school, along with several others, is being used as temporary shelter for families still without power from last week's ice storm. We lost our power for 5 days.

This weekend's snow storm left us with 21 inches of snow and today the temperature crept all the way up to 20 degrees. LOL I heard that even Seattle, WA got lots of snow and frigid temperatures. Pretty unusual.

Whenever I see photos of sunny Hawaiian beaches, I do feel like packing up and leaving this wintery climate!!!

Hope you are both enjoying the sunshine and balmy air back home! How I envy you! :-)

Wow, this is fantastic! I have been away from this team a long time and when I last checked in, there was very little activity going on! My name is Sue, I'm located in MA, have been SParking since March 31, 2008, lost a total of 22 pounds through this web site, have met some incredible people here, and hope to continue meeting and making new friends during my SPark journey!

Welcome, Shirl, Kath, Carolann, Hawaiimama, Shelly92, Shana2007, SKRCAL, Marvin, and any other newcomers!!! Hope you are well and happy and looking forward to a wonderful holiday season!

DH just brought my snack and I won't count calories-yikes--Ritz low-sodium crackers, neufchatel cheese and Tabasco red pepper jelly. Yummy. Nap sounds like a stellar idea--got a Christmas book going, so off to nap, too.

We were probably sistahs in some way, eh?

I was born in Austin, grew up in Lubbock and lived in Corpus Christi and Kingsville before moving to Louisiana then on to Hawaii.

DH owned a home and taught at Tarleton State in Stephenville.

DD taught in Baytown just outside of Houston and lived near Rice for her first teaching job. It is a small world indeed.

All of our offspring and grandson still live in DFW so we go back every year.

Aloha-

I moved to Kauai from Amarillo, TX in 2003 (raised in Houston). Watching the sun set on the second night of my first visit, nearly 20 years ago, I knew this was where I wanted to live.

Shirl I soooo miss the tamale's! There is a road side truck south of Houston that sold the best tamales. It's been around for over 30 years. I saw some at CostCo and nearly fell over at the calories. Something like 450 for 2 small ones. I dropped the package in fear that I would gain a pound from just holding it!

Today is "baking day" for neighbors & friends. LOL, I'm putting walnuts in everything because I don't like them and there will be no temptation to snack on the goodies. Talk about a self psych-out.

Aloha!
I am a Hawaiian trapped in a Neuyo-rican (Puerto Rican) body! I was born in Brooklyn, New York. To keep a long story short, I live on ohau and truly fell in love with the traditional culture of
Hawaii.

Aloha Shelly,

We live in Mililani now and love it. That's so nice to get packages from home.

I'm going to try to find some tamales for the holidays--from my Texas roots--and I cook some local food now, but haven't tried making the harder things yet.

aloha!

i am from mililani. go trojans! ;) I am on the mainlaind now. husbands job took us away. ;(
I just got my package from my mom, who still lives there, with all my goodies from hawaii. you know the kind you get from the manapua man and other stores. UGH! I miss the food so much. Where we live, on the east coast, they don't have any local food!! I did meet a lady here from Waipahu. Close enough.
I did live on the windward side for awhile when we first moved to hawaii. I lived in kaneohe. I went to heeia and kaneohe elem schools. then I went to King intermediate. we moved to kahaluu when i was in 6th grade. At the middle of 8th grade we moved to the leeward side in Mililani I lived there until i moved to the mainland. itwas about a year after i graduated. i miss it very much. We vistited two years ago. My kids loved it so much. We lived at the beach. just like it was when I was their age. It is nice to ahve a place on here to remind us of home.
TTYL,
Shelly

I'm one of those haole's with a Hawaiian spirit. We've lived on Oahu 6 years, moving to Kauai when we retire. I teach part time for HPU at the military bases and love it. DH teaches full time for HPU downtown.

Aloha everyone,

Aloha, Kakou.....

I'm one of those "Hawaiians trapped in a haole suit"....

Been coming to Kaua'i yearly since 1969 on vacation.....finally moved here in 2004. I love this island today just as much as I did when I first set foot on it 40 years ago!!

Nice to meet you all!

Aloha, I hope I am posting this is the right place. I'm new to this stuff, but seems to be really interesting. My name is Shannon and I live in California and have been here for about 6 years. I am from Wahiawa, born and raised, first time I moved from the islands and I am not enjoying it. I am 37 years old with 3 keiki. Everyones post here remind me of all my family and friends back home.
Oh yea, and I miss Zippy's and Manapua :O) Maybe, it's better that I am on the mainland right now. LOL!

Marvin, I do the same thing when I get home from the airport, I can't wait to get off the plane and go to Zippy's. I just have to limit myself, and maybe split a plate lunch with someone or save half for later. (like couple minutes later in the car...) Not, it's all about discipline and thinking differently about food and exercise.

Aloha kakou....

My name is Marvin and I was born on Kaua'i and work on O'ahu. My employer has sent me back to school (after 16 years of not being in an academic setting) for another degree. It will take me two years to graduate. I can hardly wait, because I want to be home already. One more academic year to go! Woo Hoo!!!!

I do have to say, with no plate lunches here in DC, it has been easier for me to keep some of the weight off (since there is no rice and mac salad like home. LOL). Problem is that I just went home for my summer break, and what did I do? First thing, before I even got home, I went to get one plate lunch at Byron's. I think that I must have put some of the weight back on again. Oh well, time to start all over, I guess.

I don't cook, so I do a lot of easy kine meals. If I don't eat at school, I go with the microwavable things or fast food (my other options are spam and saimin which my friends send from home as care packages). Not the best choices...

I do miss dancing hula. It is a great way to exercise, and get in touch with the culture. Although I still have active membership in the halau i belong to, whenever I get home, they are either on break or away. When I go back for good in May, it will be good to get back into a more regular routine of exercise.

So nice to have this type of group. Mahalo!!!

Malama pono kou kino...
Marvin

Pono...So glad you've joined us. We will always be here to keep you straight.

I was born and raised on Maui and moved to the mainland in about '61. In '92 I lived in Kamuela for almost a year and came to call the Big Island home. If it wasn't for the fact that my son is in Nashville, TN, I would've probably moved back a long time ago.

Hiya Jenny. Yeah you guys can call me Pono on here, since Hawaiians know what it means (righteous). On the mainland I go by Zik, but my family and everyone in the islands knows me as Pono.

Yes, Kamuela and Waimea are the same. Since every island has a Waimea town, they called the one on the Big Island Kamuela (Samuel) for Sam Parker of Parker Ranch, who started the post office there.

Captain Cook/Honaunau area is great. I love the Big Island because of all the variety. I also love Maui since my family has roots there too.

I lived all over Portland from 1971-1988 except for a year in Claremont, CA. Mostly on the east side. I went to Catlin Gable in NW PDX from 1st - 3rd grade.

We live in New Smyrna Beach, FL now, right near Daytona Beach. I think it's famous for being one of the oldest towns on the East Coast and also for being the shark bite capital of the US or something.

Thanks for the warm welcome and Aloha to all!

Hey there Zik, nah maybe we should call you Pono here, yeah? I totally know the NE area where you lived in Portland. I live in SE Portland, around 52nd & Woodstock. Lucky you, you got to go to HI every year - hopefully when the weather was junky here in PDX. Waimea is awesome. If I could live on the Big Island, I'd have a hard time choosing between Waimea area and Captain Cook/Honaunau area. Kamuela is Waimea area, right? By Parker Ranch?

What a big change from Portland to Tulsa, then to the Big Island! Where in Florida do you live now? I think we have another person on the team from Florida, not sure tho'.

Glad to have you here & congrats on your progress so far! :-)

Aloha,
Jenny

Aloha Kakou!

Zik here, but my middle name is Pononakoa, so in the islands I go by Pono. Just reading all the posts here reminds me of "home" so much. I actually grew up in Portland, OR (mostly Northeast, off 57th & Killingsworth, if you know where that is Kananipod) but we would go to the Big Island about every year growing up. My mom grew up on Hawaiian Homes Land in Waimea.

I finally took the leap and moved my family from Tulsa, OK where I had been for 11 years to the Big Island, just in time for the final few months of my grandmother's life, and then a year later my grandfather too. I was very glad to be there for the family.

Anyway, after 2 wonderful years on the Big Island we now live in Florida near my wife's family. The weather here is not quite as wonderful as Waikoloa and West Hawaii, but it's better than Tulsa, and Portland too. I try to get to the beach as often as possible just to smell the salt air and feel the sand in my toes.

Hello to all... looking forward to being in touch and supporting our healthy lifestyles "Hawaiian style."

Hi, Vanessa and welcome!!!

I was going to say, "lucky you! Manapua from your thoughtful co-workers, how nice!" but then again, that might be more like a curse. Reminds me of the friendly box of Dunkin Donuts that always finds its way around the office! LOL
