Hello! I'm Kelly and I live on a farm in SW Florida. My husband and I have donkeys, pigs, goats, ducks, geese, chickens, cats, and dogs (9 to be exact)...hence, my life is a nine dog circus!!! I have one greyhound, whom I love with everything I have. She is our only dog who gets to sleep in the bedroom with us and has such a kind, gentle, old soul. She was a coyote hunting dog in Kansas, who we rescued while we were living there. Since moving to Florida, we have become active with local greyhound rescue groups and foster greys when we are needed. I joined Spark People about 2 years ago and have recently reconnected in order to stay motivated. Happy to be here.

Discipline is choosing between what you want NOW and what you want MOST.

Hi Kristine, and welcome. In Phoenix, AZ, it is also not such a great time of year to be outdoors! My two greys max out at around 1.5 miles anyhow, so when I want a longer walk, I take them for a one-mile loop, drop them back at the house, then continue!

Hi Everyone!
I am Kristine and the very proud mom to Mike, a 7 year old grey. We live in FL which is pretty steamy this time of year, so our walks are pretty slow. Before we know it, fall will be here and we will be getting much mr exercise

I am so happy to have found this group!

Hi, I am Julia and live in the sonoran desert in Arizona (Phoenix), hence the name "DesertJulz." I am currently owned by two female greyhounds, Rio & Jade. Had two males previously and have fostered over 40, though I am currently on hiatus from fostering.

Found this group today, been on SP since May 7th.

Wrote a blog about a greyhound walk last weekend. http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_j

I just saw someone's profile with a dog lover group, searched for greyhounds, and here I am! I have four greyhounds in the house; one is a foster. I've fostered about 35 dogs in the last 4 years. I do all the nutty things like adding stuff to their food and discussing their poop with strangers.

I first found Sparkpeople a while back. I lost about 8 pounds (out of 50-ish!) the first time, then fell off the wagon. I've been back at it for 4 weeks, and it's different this time. I'm minimizing animal products in my diet, which is about the only way to prompt me to eat a lot of veggies. I've discovered new things, and I'm trying to make new habits. I'm working out 2x a week, and need to work a daily walk into my schedule. Hubby walks the hounds, they stop to pee too often to consider it exercise.

Have you tried canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling, just plain pumpkin)? I didn't see it mentioned. My grey has bouts of "indigestion" and the canned pumpkin seems to help almost everytime. We add a heaping tablespoon to every meal and mix it up with a dab of water. I have also found that food based on fish seems to have better....results. We currently use Blue Buffalo fish and sweet potato and things are much better than when we had her on a chicken/brown rice diet.

The rescue also recommended plain yogurt on occasion to make sure her probiotics stay balanced (and help prevent gas!)
I know these are probably simple remedies, but they have worked for Ember. :)

Welcome to all the new members. I have been owned by dogs since I was 9 years old -- only the last only the last 10 or so by greys. Kaleigh was our first and when we lost her to cancer I waited 2 years before being adopted by Angel. She too suffered from horrible bouts of diarrhea. We had her on Flagel for almost 2 years. Then the price went sky high. My vet suggested we try Tylan in addition to the other things we were doing, and go back to Flagel if there were no positive results. It took only a few days and the improvement was dramatic.
Hope this helps some of you.

Hi everyone!
I am so glad that there is a greyhound group on here. : ) I am new to SparkPeople and fairly new to greyhound ownership. My husband and I live just outside of Philly, PA and we adopted "Astarroyalheaven" now known as Ember in January from NGAP (www.ngap.org). Sharing my house with a greyhound is so much fun, she makes me laugh everyday. My family thinks it's hilarious that she will flop over for a belly rub as soon as anyone walks in the room. My husband and I laugh at her when she roaches, and paws at us if we have not rubbed her belly to her satisfaction. I don't know what I did without her around.

Welcome! Your dogs are beautiful. We just adopted our first greyhound about 6 weeks ago. He's already the darling of the dog park, but is a terror at home.

He's right off the track from Florida and everything in a home is a new toy. Tonight I caught him starting to chew on my husband's oxygen hose!

Looking forward to seeing more photos!

emoticon I am so glad there's a Greyt Greys team. They sure can capture your heart.

We have two black tuxedos.

Happy is eight and we have had her 5 years. She is such a ham and keeps pawing you when you stop petting her.

Elvis is 6 and was rescued from Ireland. He looks like Happy, only more white on body and his head is a little different shape. He is a ham too, is such a hoot.He tries to run form living room to kitchen and down the hall. We have laminate floors and he sprawls out, hit the chairs at the table or hits his food dish. If you can't find Elvis he is either on the rug in the hallway or on the rug in the living room.He occassionaly walks, but usually waits for us to get him by the collar and say "We're waling, We're walking.

Now that I know there is a team of greyhound lovers, I will have to post more pictures. Check in tomorrow

REMEMBER: I have had this before. I know what it tastes like, AND ITS KILLING Me ! IS IT REAL HUNGER OR HEAD & HEART HUNGER?

Thanks. He has a couple of days left of flagyl, so I'll pick up some ginger to see if that helps long term. I also found some info on the "Greyhound Gang" page. I think I'm going to try this "diet" for a day or two while he's on the flagyl:

an old remedy called the potato diet: 50% white potatoes, 50% sweet potatoes, a slice of turnip, and a slice of leek, all boiled and then mixed with boiled chicken or lamb for flavor.

We once had a golden mix that was having terrible bouts of diarrhea. She would have to go on flagyl. She was also given an i/d diet. It would always help the current episode. However about every 2-3 months, the symptoms would return. They really couldn't find anything wrong with her. After about a year of this, it was getting very frustrating.

My sister is very big into holistic care. She recommended that we start giving her ginger capsules. We decided it couldn't hurt. We didn't run it by our vet but made an executive decision. We waited to start her until she finished a course of flagyl. We gave her one capsule about every 36 hours. We didn't really know how to dose her since she was only about 50#. The recommended human dosage was 1-2 per day.

We kept her on this dosage for about 6 months with no episodes of diarrhea. We also switched her back to her normal food when we started this. After about 6 months, we slowly weened her off over the next 1-2 months. We never had another problem after that. On the rare occasion that she demonstrated that she might be getting some diarrhea, we would give her a dose or two just as a precaution. It was fantastic.

A co-worker of mine had a boxer who suffered from terrible diarrhea for the first several years of its life. To be honest, I don't know how she tolerated it. Her dog was on special diets, meds, etc with no relief. They never fed people food. However, they went on vacation and a friend of the family watched the dog. Apparently their kids started feeding the dog all kinds of people food. Surprisingly, the dog never had a problem again after that. They changed her diet to regular dog food and would occasionally make her a helping of whatever they were having for dinner. Go figure.

I hope you find something that works for your greyt.
Keep us posted.

Hi All! I'm so glad that I found this group. When my labs died of cancer a few years back, I didn't think I'd ever get another dog, much less a greyhound. After spending a week visiting friends with dogs, I knew I was ready for another. I started with a rescue boxer/beagle mix at the end of June. She's a sweetheart, but suffers terribly from separation anxiety.

So my husband decided she needed a companion and he wanted a greyt. We got Andy from Rocky Mountain Greyhound Adoption and the poor boy has been sick since the day we brought him home.

We know he raced once in Florida and came in 8th. At some point he was transported to Colorado and placed in an adoption kennel. Ours is his first home and he had lots to learn. Stairs were a big challenge and having another dog try to cuddle with him was totally foreign. Laila is slowly wearing him down on that and he occasionally shares a bed with her, sometimes voluntarily.

His big problem is diarrhea, and it just won't quit. He's been checked for parasites, including heartworms, but the vet didn't find anything. One morning he quit eating, so the vet put him on flagyl alternating with forteflora to put good bacteria back in his intestines. She also put him on Hill's i/d canned dogfood and told us to underfeed him.

Today, he refused to eat the i/d, so I boiled him some chicken breast and served it to him in broth with white rice. That got him eating again. We're also encouraging him to drink Pedialyte.

Is this just an adjustment thing, or are we missing something? He's getting pretty thin and he came to us underweight. Any advice would really be appreciated.

Remember, nobody can go back to the very beginning and make a brand new start, but anyone can start here and make a brand new end.

Thank you so much for the welcome! I'm so happy to find a whole big group of Grey-groupies. :-) Thanks MJBURGOON (I'm sorry, I don't know your name). Glad you understood my macho boys sensitivites. HA!

Heather, your comments about Boomer brought tears to my eyes! How could anyone ever treat one of these gentle loyal God's creatures like that! :-( I'm very happy to hear you are adopting him! That will make a huge difference in his life.

Every time, ok, maybe not every time, I mention one of my kids is a Grey, I hear, oh I just love those dogs.

Well, yes, how can you not?? :-)

Again, thanks for the welcome and so happy to have found this group!

I will!! We have only had him for 3 weeks. He had terrible bed sores when we got him and he has been to the vet 3 times already. He is on Prednisone because the previous vet thought he was allergic to something. The medicine has wreaked havoc on his body. He is now coming off of it but it will take 3 months. Gotta come off gradually. He is a doll though. We just love him!!

Welcome to the team!! This is an awesome team because we all love our greys so much!! I've been on Spark for about 2 years too and just love it!! Don't get on as much as I would like too but do my best. It is a wonderful place and have had much success!!

Loved your story about Berry! We are fostering Boomer right now. He is a 7 year old black grey. He was in a home for 3 years prior to us and was kept in a crate for 20 hours a day!!!!!!!!! Can you imagine!! He is really a mess and just has not had a chance to be a dog. He went from the track to a crate. We are going to adopt him because he needs to find his forever home and live life to the fullest. Wilma has been so good with him, I really thought she was going to put up a fight.

I'll have to post some pictures when I get a chance.

Again, welcome and feel free to post on whatever!! Good luck on your journey too!

Thanks for sharing. It is funny when I started spark in February 2008, I found this group and there were a whole 7 of us (including me). So glad you found us.

I am not as active in leading the group as I would like. I had agreed to be a co-leader and then the leader just up and left so I got the leadership role by default.

I love spark! It has truly changed my life. I encourage you to jump on the boards, start new topics, new challenges, etc. I am on the site frequently but I use it mainly for tracking. I also participate in the Biggest Loser Challenges which takes up most of my time. I feel bad about not being around as much as I should.

I love this group though. We have so much in common. It is a very support place to come especially with questions and concerns about your greyt.

I also have another dog and cat. I often feel bad for my other dog as when we are walking the two together, the greyt gets all the attention. So I thought it was funny that you introduced your other dog first:)

So glad you and your greyt found each other. Even more that you have stayed active with your local greyhound group.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if there is anything I can do for you.

WELCOME!

Hello, my name is Nan (or Nancy – my friends call me by either) in St. Louis, MO. Warning – I tend to be wordy, so I will apologize off the top and won't be hurt if you stop reading (yawn)! :-)

I have been on SP since March of this year and had NO idea this group existed. I was so happy to see there was an actual Greyhound group!

I am Mom to a black lab/shep mix named Schemie (Bo Schembechler – sorry Buckeye fans! :-) ) who just turned 14 in May. I mention him first so his feelings aren’t hurt, because my intro is really about his sister.

I am also Mom to a gray kitty, Smokey, who is turning 16 in September. I mention him because he’s bound to wake me in the middle of the night with a claw on my face.

Finally, I am Mom to Berry (Flying Berry) who I adopted through STL ReGAP when she was 6 1/2 and who is turning a grand 12 years old on Aug. 2. She is my baby girl and my little angel.

Lucky for me, I found Berry. Her story brought tears to my eyes. I thought, she needs someone like me who will love her and keep harm away from her and I need her to love (I had just lost a Brittany mix rescue 4 mos. prior). After some awkwardness and trial and error (she is still a very timid girl with strangers 5 1/2 years later), she’s my darling little girl and she certainly claims me as her mommy.

Long road to get to my first Grey (another story) but I read about her on ReGAP’s website and was interviewed by ReGAP and then was allowed to meet Ber and her fosters, who are now very good personal friends as well. I took her home for a "trial" on a Sat. and called them Sun. and said she wasn't leaving my home. She was home now.

We love to have our doggie days where they all get together. And I have become friends with the kennel master at ReGAP’s kennel and love to get out there to visit, take cleaning and dog supplies and play with the babies there.

So happy to hear of this group, happy to meet you all and most of all, happy to have the Greys in my life.

Hi - I just found this site and I'm thrilled! I have a 7 year old cow dog (white with black spots)that I adore. She is a great companion on long walks and she loves to be outdoors.

Welcome to the team! So sorry to hear about Morgana. She was beautiful. Just know that you gave the best life while she was with you.

Anubis is very handsome. Congrats. You will definitely have fun getting to know each other.

I'm very active in my Greyhound Adoption group and you gave me a great idea .... doing a meet & greet at the Renaissance Fair here in Georgia. I will have to check it out.

Good luck on your journey hear on SparkPeople. This group is great, so stop in if you need some motivation!!

So sorry to hear about Morgana. We lost our last greyhound unexpectedly also. We had only had her for about 18 months. It sounds like Morgana was loved in the short time you had her and will never be forgotten.

Anubis is a very lucky guy. It is so exciting when you get them "fresh" off the track. Everything is like a new adventure for them (and you). It is greyt to watch the "come into their own".

Glad you found our little group!

I am so excited! I was told there was greyhound group and it blew me away!! Woo Hoo! I love it!

We lost Morgana on December 12th. You can read the details on my blog. It was a very sudden thing and over in seconds. We only had her 7 months and 19days. She was found wandering the streets of Downtown Oklahoma City. She had already been retired 3 years by the time we got her. She ran 90 races, won 19 of them and placed second in 9 more. It was a joy to watch her run. (She was 7) She had been abused and was pretty timid. I loved her so much! She was our first dog EVER! At our age most people can't believe we have never had a dog. Anyway, Anubis was delivered yesterday. He is 5 and has only been off the track 2 weeks! I was shocked when I found out how recent his retirement began. I have pics of both of them on my SparkPage. Anubis is playful and very animated. We are just getting to know each other. We are planning on getting our second one this Summer. We are considering doing some fostering at some time too. Hounds of the Heartland have been greyt, I am so happy to have found them! Medieval Faire in Norman last year and fell in love with them!

I love my SparkLife!!

Well welcome to spark, welcome to the team and congrats on adopting your first greyt. They truly capture the heart. My first was a big boy too!

They certainly know how to soak up coach and bed time. I guess they figure they have earned it after all those races (although my one now never raced so I don't know what her excuse is)

Best of luck to you and I look forward to getting to know you on this incredible journey!

Hello! I just joined Spark today and was so happy and surprised to find a greyhound group. My husband and I live in Western PA. We adopted our first retired racer in May of 2009. His name is Razputin (our name) and he raced as Hawk Harrelson. We adopted through Going Home Greyhounds in Wexford PA.
Raz is a big (81 lbs) red brindle and white boy. He turned 4 on September 13. He is LOVIN the retired life! We are now considering adopting a second dog!

I totally get the whole neighbor's dog thing. My dogs have worn a path in front of our fence chasing the neighbor's dog. Wish they understood that they are NEVER gonna get each other. Sorry to hear it lead to a toe dislocation.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Gryffin is now in a splint because he dislocated a toe. He went a little wacky at the fence, bouncing around because the neighbor's dogs were out. Yup, ten years old and not slowing down at all!

Welcome to the team!! Wow! You certainly have a full house ... but I'm sure it is wonderful. My girl Wilma did a lot of racing ... till she was 5. So she is now really enjoying her retirement and is not puppy like at all ... my big couch potato!

Congrats on being a survivor. You are an inspiration to many! Good luck on your journey and continued good health.

Glad you found our little group. Thanks for taking the time to tell us about Gryffin (and his Italian friends). Gryffin's story sounds a lot like my Sitka's. We got her when she was just 18 months old. She has been so different than our two previous greyhounds....much more "puppy like".

Best of luck to you on this journey and congratulations on being a survivor!

Hi everyone! I have one greyhound named Gryffin. He's ten years old and I've been lucky to have him for over eight of those years. He basically flunked out of racing school in Connecticut, making it through his training races, but apparently not any further. That means that I got to enjoy him as young as two years old, and he's still much the puppy!!!

I also have five Italian greyhounds named Merlin, Willow, Luna, Walker and Rosie. I just moved to Maryland to share a home with my mom. I'm an artist, a recent breast cancer survivor, and am happy to have found you!

Welcome to the team!! Sounds like you have a good plan in place, so good luck on your journey. I love the Wii, too. If you don't know, there is a great Wii SparkTeam called Wii Fit Challenge. I don't do it as much as I used too though. I also love My Fitness Trainer.

Greyt to have you on the team!

Welcome to the team! Sounds like you have a busy household.

Wish I could give you some helpful "vegan" tips but I must admit that I am a big meat eater. Best of luck to you.

Hi all,

I just came back to SP. I kind of started about 2 years ago, but never did anything. Anyway, I have 2 greyhounds, 1 irish wolfhound mix, and 2 cats. I'm looking to lose about 60 lbs. I love yoga, aerobics, dancing, hiking, etc. I am currently addicted to the Wii fitness games. I live in Phx, AZ and am a full time student, going for my MA in education, and work full time for a construction company.

I am also a vegetarian kind of moving into full Vegan. So always looking for ideas on that. It's a pleasure to meet you all.

Well we are glad you found us. Sounds like you have a busy household. I only have one greyt, one mutt and one cat. It is all I can take sometimes. Hats off to you!

Best of luck to you on your Spark journey. Hopefully you and your pups can get out there and get moving. They are great motivation.

Hello to all, I am new to spark and I am extatic that there is a team that loves sighthounds as much as I do, currently I have 8, 2 greyhounds, 2 saluki\greyhound, 2 stag\greyhound and 2 Whippets. I owe my motivation to them for they all keep me moving :)

Thanks Molly
We've called the foster dog Toffee as he's a brindle and toffee coloured (I could just be having a bad week diet wise and obsessed with sweets though).

He's fab. We seem to have had a spate of magical vanishing sandwiches today though. Funny that, my other greyhound mates have similar phenomena at their houses too. Probably ghosts emoticon

Well I would say you have a busy house. Keep us posted whether or not you are able to adopt your newest addition. Sounds like that little guy has had quite an adventure in the last couple weeks.

Thanks for joining our group. We are small but I think we are a greyt bunch. Feel free to start new topics, challenges, etc. I will admit that I have been a poor leader of this team recently as other obligations have seem to have taken over my life but I am still trying to keep up. We have a thread called "Who's That Dog." It is a great place to learn about some of the dogs we have. I try to post a new dog every month or so.

Best of luck to you on your spark journey!

Molly

Hi

I'm new to the team. I have 5 dogs, only one of which is a full Greyhound. He's being fostered by us at the moment (we plan to fail at fostering any day now). He was raced last week and we found him on the streets 60 miles from his training kennels just 3 days after his race. Bless him. He' s only 2 and very gorgeous. We are waiting for the racing peeps to say that the trainer knows nothing about this dog and for them to confirm that his 'owner' is uncontactable. As soon as they say that, we will officially adopt the boy and fail at fostering (again).

We also have a Greyhound x Saluki Lurcher, who is ancient. A whippet who is a bit blonde, bless him. 2 Jack Russells too. Everyone loves everyone else so its a happy pack.

I look forward to chatting with you all.

Blessed are the cracked for it is those who let in the light.
