I can't believe the Twins lost again last night! From what I read, the relievers are really falling apart. Even Joe Nathan got hit (and got the loss). emoticon
I'm so glad I'll be seeing them at home!
On a good note, walked again last night. I had to talk myself into it - first I was just going to the park and back, then I decided one lap on the track, but ended up doing my usual two laps. Kept up the pace too (but was I sore by the time I got home!) A good reminder that I'm closer to 40 than 30, and I've had a few injuries in my day!

Did you watch the game at all last night? I went to bed when the Twins had a six run lead. I check MLB.com this morning, expecting to see another win. Imagine my shocked dismay!

I know - there was a lot of concern about him. Hopefully this is the first of many good outings for him!
On a personal note - shaved about 5 minutes off my time around the 'circuit' today.

OMG! Liriano's back, and the Twins are leading the AL Central!
I'm going to MN for a visit in two weeks, and my sister and I are planning to catch a Twins game - probably vs. Oakland. Hope they're still playing well mid-month.
Hope everyone had a good weekend.
Go Twins! (and thank you Royals! emoticon )

I watched that game too....got so excited I scared my dog--nobody else was home to share the excitement with me. It all started when Span got hit by a pitch but got ruled a strike. I thought it was hilarious that after all that, Span walked anyway. Gardy knows what to do to fire up the team....woo hoo!!!

Minnesota got hit pretty hard yesterday...especially the southern half. Ugh! We didn't get anything from the system really. It rained a little here. Not so much that you would notice. I still have to run the sprinkler today to keep my grass from dying. I am sorry to hear that there was such a mess at your family's place.

I was SO excited about the Twins last night. I wanted to start calling people to tell them about the game....then I realized all of my friends would think I was crazy. Gardy got ejected and the fans littered the field with hats and balls! It was awesome!!!

Have a great weekend!

Hey, thanks for noticing! Yes, Clara City had some pretty violent weather yesterday. My mom called last night about 8 p.m. Minnesota time, and they didn't have power restored at that time. They spent most of the day cleaning up their yard and my aunt and uncle's yard.

Did you get any of that weather system?

I saw the report about the plane crash earlier yesterday, but they hadn't mentioned anything about it being weather related in the early reports. We're hearing about that crash here, too, as the flight originated in Atlantic City.

On a happier note, the Twins won last night! I had checked the score at the top of the 5th when it was 4-0 Chicago - I couldn't bear to look again! I was so surprised when I saw the final score in my email this morning. emoticon

That's about all from here - have a great weekend!

Carren,
I was just reading an article in the paper...about a plane crash in Owatonna....and I read this....
"n Clara City, about 120 miles northwest of Owatonna, the high winds blew a grain bin and grain conveyor across state Highway 23, knocking down the primary power line to the city.

``We have major, major damage in town,' Roger Knapper, Clara City public works emergency management director, told the West Central Tribune of Willmar. ``You can look anyplace and there are trees all over the place.'

Wind speeds were estimated at 80 miles an hour when the storm hit the small town about 7 a.m. "

Sorry, hit send a little early....

It's odd, it didn't get as hot as predicted yesterday, but the humidity is yucky. Hoping it wont' be too back tonight when I hit the walking path tonight. Though I have to admit, I actually don't feel the heat too badly until I stop.

Very glad to hear you had a great ride with some great people.

Take care!

We had really good weather and a really good ride. I even made a few new friends...YEA!

I am sorry to hear it's been SO humid! I hate to be one of those people...but it really isn't the heat it's the humidity that will get you. Yuck!

Congrats on your ride - I was thinking of you.

I've heard about the lack of rain - my parents haven't gotten much, either. Funny how it can be so stormy and yet get so little precipitation.

We have another heat advisory today - the humidity was oppressive at 9 a.m. Supposed to be cooler tomorrow.

Can you believe the Twins take the lead in the AL Central if they win tonight!?!

Take care!

That's awesome that your mom marched too! We didn't have marching band :( oh well It's funny that you all played brass....except your sister...and she was the one that quit early.

I hope that you are able to find an opportunity to play again. I've really enjoyed it...I enjoy it now more than I did in school!

I am glad your weather is clearing out there. We need rain...and we aren't really getting any. My grass is starting to burn up. It's so funny that you either get too much rain here or not enough.

I've just recently heard someone talking about the Gipsy Kings. I will have to look into them.

New furniture sounds exciting!

The bike ride went great! The weather was AWESOME! YEA!

Yes, my petite little mother even marched with a tuba (and her high school didn't get a sousaphone until her junior or senior year!) My brother followed her lead, and actually played tuba in the University of Houston marching band for several years. I copied my Dad and played horn, and I played in college, too. My sister was the wimp who played flute, and she quit in junior high! emoticon
I'm going to look into the orchestra for next year, or see if I can find some other opportunities in the area.
The weather FINALLY cleared up here, so I got out for an hour walk yesterday.
emoticon I'll go again today. I also found some good music to listen to - the Gipsy Kings! It's energetic and rhythmic without being too fast.
I have some serious cleaning to do at home this weekend - I have new furniture coming in a few weeks, and I want the rest of my stuff organized and put away before it comes.
Best of luck on your ride - I can't wait to hear all about it next week! Enjoy!

Wow! Your mom played tuba? I am not sure I've even seen a woman tuba player. I know a female baritone players...but she's loosely female if you know what I mean.
I totally had to relearn...but it comes but SO quickly. I would encourage you to join the orchestra if you are able. I've had SO much fun playing again.

Yeah...DGF is a pretty small school district. We make it to state every few years in something. I call it east Moorhead :)

Good luck with the workouts....it sounds like you are plugging away!

Take care!

The ride is in fact this weekend. I am busy trying to get all of my pledges turned in and my bike checked up etc. It's a lot of fun...but a lot of hassle at the last second.
I think the weather is supposed to be good. I am sorry to hear that the weather has been SO bad out there.

Great job on the tai chi I would have just skipped working out if the weather didn't cooperate. You are doing great!

No problem. Couldn't remember if this was the week of the big ride. If so, hope it's going well!
Terrible weather here yesterday - thunderstorms from 2 pm. through the night. Still raining this morning. So, I did tai chi instead of walking. Not quite the same workout, but something different!

Hi Gwen - long time no talk. How's everything going?
I've been under the weather this whole week, so I've gotten next to nothing done - haven't been walking or eating properly. Hoping to get back out there tonight. I'm not 100% yet, but close enough to hit the trail.
Take care, and chat with you soon.

That's true - I think I was one of the few women playing brass at my school too. Of course, it runs in my family. My mom played TUBA! (and this was the late fifties and early sixties).

It's so cool you've found a band to play with. I really miss it, and think about getting a horn and joining the community orchestra here. Of course, I'd have to relearn how to play, too!

I have to admit - I've heard of Glyndon Felton, but I had to look it up on a map to remind myself where it was. I seem to recall Glyndon Felton having pretty good sports teams, but I could be mistaken.

My high school consolidated, too, the year after I graduated. It's now MACCRAY (Maynard, Raymond and Clara City.) Seems lots of rural schools are going that route.

I got to see a replay of the Home Run Derby last night on ESPN - it was amazing watching Josh Hamilton knock ball after ball out (13 in a row at one point). But I guess he wore himself out before the final round, and Justin came through in the end. And I definitely think Mauer and Morneau are the type of players the Twins need - not flashy, just good solid every day play that wins the Twins games. Seriously, how many players earn the MVP award in a year they weren't even on the All Star team, like Morneau did in 2006? emoticon

I will certainly hope you have a tail wind and not a head wind for your ride, especially if it's hot. But as long as there's no severe weather demanding you take immediate cover, it's going to go great! With any luck, the weather systems will have burnt themselves out, and you'll have beautiful days.

Speaking of weather, we are supposed to have excessive heat advisories for the entire weekend emoticon I'm going to have to plan out exactly when to get out and walk, either getting up really early and going before work tomorrow, or waiting until just before the sun goes down. Or perhaps I'll stay in the air conditioning and break out the tai chi DVD I bought several years ago and never tried. emoticon

Have a great day!

It's funny how few women play brass...especially in small towns. I was the first female low brass player in my high school. Of course, I quit by 9th grade to play sports. LOL Three years ago I joined a concert band here in town. It's lots of fun...but OMG I had to google slide positions. It came back but i was pretty rusty for a long time.
I've actually been thru Clara City. My ex-sister-in-law is a teacher in Montevideo! I went to Dilworth...which consolidate when I was in 10th grade to Dilworth Glyndon Felton.
I am really excited about Mauer and Morneau. I really really hope that they stick with the Twins for a long time! I know that they may not always be as exciting as some of the young guns...but i think they are more likely to be lifers!
I think the weather will be fine. I am not too worried about the heat....just about the wind. I hope that we have a good tail wind :) Actually I am on the planning committee...and I don't know of a single contingency plan! LOL I hope we don't need one!

Hey, a fellow brass player! I played French horn, but played mellophone for marching band. I also taught myself trombone and trumpet for jazz band, not that I was ever very good at those two instruments. I know how you feel about fingerings - though I only had to remember the differences between horn and trumpet. Of course, I threw it all away to become a singer! Go figure.
So, what high school did you go to? I went to Clara City, a little rural school that managed to have a pretty good band in the late 70s and early 80s. Not so hot by the time I got there in the mid 80s, but oh well.
I am so proud of Justin Morneau - not only did he win the home run derby and score the winning run for the AL, he seems like he's really humble about it and just excited to have had the opportunity. Boy, I hope he sticks around for a long time. Joe Mauer, too!
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you with the weather for your ride. I can't imagine anything worse than being caught out in one of these storms. I'm sure the organizers are going crazy coming up with contingency plans if a really bad one should hit during the ride.
Good luck!

Hi Carren!

I was (and still am) a band geek. What do you play? I play trombone. I tried teaching myself baritone...but it didn't work really well. I just wasn't all that dedicated to it...and I couldn't get the fingering down. Sigh!

I didn't see the game either. Just the highlights. I am SO glad that Morneau is doing so well. First the home run derby and then the winning run....YEA!

There really has been a lot of severe weather this year. Ugh! In 10 days I do my 150 mile charity ride for MS I am really hoping we have good weather!

Take care!

Gwen,
Thanks for the tip emoticon - I'll have to check it out. I wasn't looking forward to digging out a metronome and playing guess and check with tempos.
Like I said - I'm a former marching band geek. I spent 10 years of my life walking in tempo - it's ingrained. Being a trained musician contributes, too. Too bad - a lot of the songs I like are slower tempos! emoticon
So, did you watch the All Star Game last night? I missed it, but caught the highlights, including Morneau's winning run, on the internet this morning.
Glad to hear the severe weather missed you. There's just been too much of it this summer.
Have a good rest of your week!

Carren,
My friend is the exact same way. He cannot run unless the song is the right tempo. I can't run if I don't like the song. Isn't that funny!
We didn't get the storms here. They started just east of here and the moved to the cities. A knew kids playing soccer down in Eden Prairie and Blaine and they got it. It's weird how weather will hit one place but not another.
It was horribly windy here. Yuck!

Good luck with your walking!!! There is software that you can download onto your computer that will figure out the bpm of music.... I think it's something like bpm.com or something...It's free I know that much!

Hi Gwen! How was your weekend? Did you get any of that nasty weather? My parents live 20 miles from Willmar, so you'd think they were right in the path of the storm, but they said they didn't get anything but straight wind.
I got out and walked 5500 steps last night. I've come to the conclusion I really need to put together a play list for the MP3that keeps me moving. I kept having to skip songs because they were too slow. (I am a former band geek, so I absolutely cannot do anything but walk in tempo to what I'm listening too!) Another project for this weekend.
Hope you're well!

Thanks Gwen. I got out for a walk tonight (the weather was finally nice enough) and added about 1500 steps above last time. If I add another detour to my route each time I go out, I should soon be approaching that magic 10,000. Good music helps I think. Thank goodness for MP3 players! emoticon

It has been so hot and sticky here that it's really hard to motivate myself to do anything! It's been stormy off and on since the weekend, too.
I've been wearing a pedometer just to see how much I actually move during the course of a regular day. Yesterday I took over 4000 steps (which I think translates to about two miles). Of course, my method of grocery shopping probably helped (I'm back and forth across the store at least three times!) So I am moving a little, if not as much as I'd like.

My holiday was kinda lazy too. I did get a run in...but I probably negated it by having a hot dog and beer at our local baseball teams game. Oh well!

Hope you are well!

Hi Gwen. I'm sorry to say I've been a bit lazy over the weekend (of course, the weather has not been cooperative). I plan to get back out there tonight, barring torrential rain.
How was your holiday weekend?

Happy 4th to you as well!!! Are you still walking? I've been dealing with some health stuff and I haven't gotten a whole lot done lately.

Hi Carren,
A two mile walk is a great start!! Way to go! I think walking is wonderful exercise...and something that is really easy to stick too! It's nice to have an MP3 player while you are working out.

I watching them online when I am at work and can't see the games. The pitch by pitch thing is really pretty cool.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Gwen,
I am proud to report that I went for a two mile walk tonight, and even did a little strength training. Walking really is the best exercise for me, I think. I am too heavy and have too many old injuries to run. Also, it's easier to listen to my MP3 at a smooth gait.
It is hard to not see the Twins much, but at least I can track them on the internet! I'll probably break down and subscribe to MLB.com's radio service this summer just so I can hear my team.
Have a good week! emoticon Carren

Hey Carren,
Walking can be really hard work! I think it's harder than running! That's really nice that your parents were able to visit!
I am so excited about the Twins! I am bummed that they split with Milwaukee but...at least they won 2 of the 3!
I am sure they don't carry many of the games out your way...that's too bad!

Thanks Gwen!
So, I did quite a bit of walking this weekend. My parents were visiting, and my father loves to go into New York and just walk around. We walked from the World Trade Center site to Battery Park, then up the East River to the South Street Seaport, Chinatown and Little Italy. Unfortunately, that is the most exercise I've gotten in a LONG time. I really hope to get back into the habit of walking every day this summer.
On a different subject - how about those TWINS! I don't get to see or hear their games often, but I keep track of their results. It's great to see them back on Chicago's heels!

Hello everyone! I'm a displaced Minnesotan currently living in New Jersey, and I'm so happy to have a place to connect with my home state and my favorite baseball team! It's tough living in Yankee/ Mets/Phillies territory.

To the Iowa members of the team - my thoughts and prayers are with you.

That is very frustrating. We have a pretty decent sized Y here...but they seem to aim all the classes to people that don't work during the day....Sigh!

I hope the flood waters recede and you can get outside soon!

It is just a local gym and they do offer some classes but never at the time I can make it. And then half the time if attendance is low then they just cancel it. FRUSTRATING! I just need to buy a treadmill and get it over with! haha

Welcome to the team. Which gym do you belong to? Do they offer a body bump class? If so, I would absolutely recommend that! It's a high energy fun class!
Good Luck and welcome to the team!

Hey guys! So I have been a member for awhile but there is some much to do that I always forget about the groups! I would really like to get started on this, cuz I think it will definitely get me motivated more! I'm from Iowa which is nothing put a huge lake right now, no fun at all. I love to run outside but everything is flooded! So I'm forced to go to the gym. Curious if anyone has and good cardio workouts that they do. I would like to add a little spice to my workout!

But on the Twins side......LOVE THEM....have been a fan since I was in the crib! Win or Lose they are my team!
Go Twins Go! Atleast we got a win last night!
